    Attended Fremont Normal college, and briefly taught in his hometown of Milligan. He moved to Des Moines, Iowa, and graduated from Highland Park College with a degree in pharmacy, later moving to Chicago and graduating from Northwestern with a Medical Degree. He practiced medicine in the Imperial Valley and Bay area of California. He served as a Captain in the Medical Corps during the First World War, being attached to an evacuation hospital at American European Forces, France. In 1925, he did post graduate work in Vienna. Both of his sons entered the medical field. (Milligan, p 306-307).

    Frank and his father were certified members of the Red Polled Cattle Club. They operated a dairy, delivering fresh bottled milk and cream to Milligan residents and businesses. Cows were hand-milked, and glass bottles were washed and sterilized by hand. The dairy was closed during World War II when the children were no longer there to help run it. (Milligan, p 307).

He was a member of the Army Sixth Division Band, and honorably discharged in December, 1945. After his marriage, John farmed and played in various community orchestras. He entered the armed services in 1944, training in Fort Hood, Texas. He left for overseas with the 43rd Infantry as a Bowing Automatic Rifleman in Luzon, Phillipines, where he was stationed for four months. He later spent 12 months at the 3291st Signal Base Depot at Yokohama, Japan, serving as warehouse foreman. He was discharged in 1946 at the rank of Staff Sergeant. He returned to farming with his parents and also played in area dance bands, namely Tom Bures, Henry Steinacher and Robert Roesner. (Milligan, p 242).

    Wilhelmina Rose Votipka Murphy was born to William and Rose (Hromadka) Votipka on August 5, 1916 on a farm south of Exeter, Nebraska. She graduated from Exeter High School in 1933, and taught in country schools south of Exeter.
    On June 17, 1940, she married Leo W. (Swede) Murphy, her high school sweetheart. They enjoyed 49 years together, raising six children on the family farm.
    While their children attended St. Stephen's Catholic School, Wilma was active in the Home and School Association. In the early 1960's she worked at the Exeter Rexall Drug store. When Memory Manor opened in 1965, she was on the first staff of caregivers, then worked as secretary for her sons at Murphy Plumbing and Heating until 1984.
    After Swede died in 1989, Wilma continued to live in the house they built when they were married, until she moved to the Exeter Care Center at age 90. Throughout her life, she was an inspiration with her strong faith, graceful demeanor, and love of family.
    Kolaches, canasta, cooking and crafts are among the many things Wilma shared with family. With dozens of grandchildren and great grandchildren, she always had plenty of visitors, as well as activities to attend. She enjoyed her many friends, including those in bridge and pinochle groups, fitness classes, St. Stephen's Altar Society and Exeter Woman's Club. Wilma enjoyed travel, reading, and working crossword puzzles.
    She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, three sisters, and a son-in-law. She is survived by her brother, Bill Victor of Northridge, California; three daughters and sons-in-law, three sons and daughters-in-law; 17 grandchildren and 35 great grandchildren. Her children and their spouses are: Kathleen and Bob Harre of rural Exeter, Bill and Carol Murphy of Crete, Tim and Sherrill Murphy of Omaha, Kriss and Gib Fendrick of Omaha, Barry and Sylvia Murphy of Exeter, and Rose and Dan Vodvarka of Lincoln.
    Funeral services 10:30 a.m., Tuesday at the St. Stephen's Catholic Church in Exeter. Rosary services Monday, at 7:30 p.m. at the Farmer Funeral Home in Exeter,NE.     Vivian was born on a farm northwest of Milligan. She and her parents and two sisters moved to Shickley, where they also farmed, when she was still an infant. The family later moved to their family farm near Milligan. She completed her grade school education in District #25. She graduated from Exeter High School in 1936, and after graduation taught school in York and Saline Counties. She moved to Lincoln, where she worked at the Miller and Paine's Department Store. During World War II, she worked at the Cushman Motor Works, working on the bomb fuse assembly line, later transferring to the office. She left their employment after her marriage to Wally Johnson of Friend in 1948. She and Wally worked at the Vogue Theater which he owned and the Friend Sale Barn, which they purchased in 1954. In 1957, they began to collect antique autos, and later opened an antique shop. They traveled extensively throughout the United States and foreign countries. (Milligan, p 322).

    V. Vivian Johnson

    V. Vivian Johnson was born in Fillmore County on a farm near Exeter, Nebraska on February 15, 1919 to William and Rose (Hromadka) Votipka, the third of five children and died Tuesday, January 26, 2010 at the Exeter Care Center in Exeter at the age of 90 years 11 months and 11 days. As a young girl Vivian attended Exeter High School and graduated with the class of 1936. She furthered her education by attending Wayne State Teachers College and earned her teaching certificate. For a time she taught rural schools in Saline and York Counties. On February 14, 1948, Vivian was united in marriage to Carl W. "Wally" Johnson in San Francisco, California.

    Returning to Friend, Vivian and Wally operated the Vogue Theater in Friend from 1948 until 1957 and in 1960 they started Johnson's Antique Shop. Over the years they became quite the "experts" in collecting and acquiring various antiques, especially antique automobiles. Vivian had great fun wearing antique clothing to go with the car when they would ride in parades or car tours. She also often put on "style shows" to show off the antique clothing. Together they enjoyed extensive traveling as well. Vivian was an excellent cook and enjoyed entertaining her family, cookies were always available when you stopped in to visit. Vivian is remembered by her nieces and nephews as being the authority. If Aunt Vivian said to do it, it was done.

    Vivian was a member of the United Church of Christ the American Legion Auxiliary in Friend and a former member of the Congregational Church in Exeter. Vivian spent many hours working with the card recycling at the Friend Manor.

    She is survived by her brother, Bill Victor, Northridge, CA, sister, Wilma Murphy, Exeter, sister-in-law, Doris Conti, Mountain View, CA, several nieces, nephews and a host of other relatives and friends.

    Vivian was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Wally in 1985 and sisters, Lucille Wright and Helen Hayes.

    A Funeral Service will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, January 30, 2010 at the United Church of Christ in Friend with the Revs. Tim and Ginny Adams officiating. Interment will be in the Andrew Cemetery. Visitation will be on Friday from 11 am - 8 pm at Lauber-Moore Funeral Home, Friend. Memorials have been established to the church.

    Ronald R. Kubicek, 79, of Beaver Crossing, was born March 12, 1935 to Ralph and Libbie (Petracek) Kubicek and passed away Tuesday, June 10, 2014, at Exeter Care Center. He graduated from Cordova High School with the class of 1952 and served with the US Army during the Korean Conflict. During his high school years he began a long career as a truck driver and later operated Kubicek and Sons Trucking for several years. Ron was united in marriage to Arlene Suchy on June 5, 1971 in Omaha.
    He also worked with Ricenbaw and Noler trucking companies and farmed part time. Ron served for several years on the Beaver Crossing Volunteer Fire Department. He was also a member of the American Legion Holmes Post #178. In his spare time he enjoyed playing cards, fishing and participating in local parades with his antique tractors.
    He is survived by his wife, Arlene Kubicek, Beaver Crossing, daughter, Ronelle (Brian) Krenke and their children Nathan and Meghan, of Waverly, son, Jason (Jody) Kubicek and their children, Libbie Kubicek, Andrew and Kayla Ostendorf, of Waco, step-children, Kim (Pete) Koehler and their children, Mary and Robert, of Highland Village, TX, Karla (Don) Wullenwaber, of Waco and their children Kacie (Isaac) Lopez of Castle Rock, CO and Tyler Wullenwaber of Lincoln, Randal (Becky) Niewedde and their children, Spencer and Mariah, of York, step-great-granddaughter, Addison, sister-in-law, Carolyn Johnson, of Waverly, cousins, and a host of other relatives and friends.

    Obituary

    David John Capek was born to John James & Rosemary (Kovanda) Capek on March 30, 1948 at Friend, Nebraska. He passed away on December 19, 2023 at Bryan East Hospital in Lincoln, Nebraska at the age of 75 years, 8 months, and 20 days. He was one of 2 children born in the family.

    David grew up on a farm near Milligan, Nebraska. He graduated from Exeter High School with the class of 1966. He went on to attend Nebraska Wesleyan University, graduating in 1970. While at Wesleyan, David met Denise King and they were married on June 6, 1971. To this union three children were born: Karel, Haley, and Morgan. After graduating from Wesleyan, David attended the University of Nebraska at Lincoln and obtained a Master's Degree and Ph.D. in political science. After college, he worked for the Nebraska Department of Corrections Research area before returning to the family farm in 1980. He raised Registered Angus Cattle and farmed the family farm ground until retirement.

    David stayed busy with the farming operation, helping to raise the children with the busy work schedule of a medical doctor wife, children's 4-H projects and various school events. After retirement, David spent most of his time in Lincoln. He enjoyed attending Broadway productions at the Orpheum Theatre in Omaha, travelling, reading, and sports, especially Husker Volleyball. He also enjoyed working on his Thunderbird, but he especially valued time spent with wife, children, and grandchildren.

    David was also a faithful blood donor as long as his health permitted. He answered many donor requests and understood what an important gift it was for others, especially after his wife's survival of lymphoma.

    David was preceded in death by his father & mother John & Rosemary Capek.

    He is survived by his wife Denise Capek, MD of Lincoln, Nebraska; children Karel Capek, MD & wife Janet of Victoria, Texas, Haley Peters, Ph.D & husband Dr. Darrick Peters of Elkhorn, Nebraska, and Morgan Capek of Lincoln, Nebraska; sister Dr. Marilyn Capek of Winchester, Massachusetts; eight grandchildren including Rudy Capek, Ryker Peters, Kyran Peters, Zyan Peters, Tytus Peters, Helen Capek, Ingrid Capek, and Greta Capek; and many nieces and nephews.
