    Notes:

In the Milligan Nebraska 1888-1988 book, it was noted that Antonie Matejka was born on June 11, 1840 (p 215) but this appears to be an error. This date of birth would have made her 116 at her date of death. Also, her parents were born in 1835 and 1839 (p 415), and her husband was born in 1864. Her date of birth was probably circa 1870, as it is also noted that "Antonie's father, Frank, and older brother, James came to the country in 1879, and after buying land, sent for his wife....and eight small children....(who traveled) to Bremen, Germany by rail and then boarded a ship to America. Antonie was only nine years old." (p 215)

The Milligan book also notes that "She was devoted to her family and worked diligently for ZCJB Lodge in Milligan and worked for donations and pledges toward the building of the Milligan Auditorium. She also worked for the F.C.D. Organization. Her many handcrafts were appreciated by all and she was a great flower lover and gardener." (Milligan p 215).

It appears that there were TWO Antonie MATEJKA's in or around Milligan, NE who were relatively close in age. There was also an Antonie MATEJKA who was the first wife of Joseph ROHLA, and who was born 22 May 1866 and died 28 May 1943. (Milligan, p 325).

FRANK MATEJKA MILLIGAN PIONEER DIES IN HOSPITAL

Frank Matejka was born May 26, 1871 in Trtic, Czechoslovakia. He came to this country with his parents and family in 1879.

He was married to Johanna Zelenka, and to this union were born three daughters, and four sons.

Mr. Matejka had been in poor health several years, and since last spring steadily weakened. Sixteen days ago, he was taken to St. Elizabeth Hospital, where he passed away Monday, October 28, 1957, at the age of 86 years 5 months, and 2 days.

He leaves to mourn his departure his three daughters, Mary, Agnes, and Mrs. William (Ella) Krejdl; and two sons, John and Edward; two granddaughters, Marily Matejka and Mrs. Dean (Betty) McMullin; one brother Emil; and also a host of relatives and friends. His wife, two infant sons, his parents, three sisters and four brothers preceded him in death.

Frank experienced the hard pioneering life with his parents. He and his wife spent their active years farming, retiring to Milligan about 14 years ago. In his years he was a gardener, and also liked to read. He was a kind, loving husband and father; and his friendly qualities will be remembered by his friends and neighbors.

    Obituary, From FindAGrave

EMIL MATEJKA FILLMORE PIONEER CALLED BY DEATH

Emil Matejka passed away Friday, December 17, 1965, at his home at Milligan, Neb., after three months of illness. He spent two months at the Fairbury hospital.

He was born May 1, 1877, the son of Frank and Mary (Petracek) Matejka. Fillmore pioneers who lived northeast of Milligan. He attended school in District No. 6. As a young man, he learned the trade of blacksmithing, along with his farming. His hobby was taking care of his orchard and caring for his flowers, which he loved to do. He had a kindly disposition, and was very much devoted to his family and friends. He always thought of others first.

    Obituary, from FindAGrave

Alfred Charles Matejka was born to Charles Matejka and Anna Vavra Matejka on October 9, 1923, at Milligan, NE, and passed away June 26, 2013, at Ridgewood Care Center in Seward, Ne, at the age of 89 years, 8 months, and 17 days. He was one of 5 children in the family.

Alfred was born, raised, and lived on the same farm Northeast of Milligan all his life, except for the past 5 1/2 years. In 1984 Alfred was recipient of the Ak-Sar-Ben Pioneer Farm award given to families in Nebraska whose land has been owned by the same family 100 years or more.

Alfred had a love for conversation and telling stories, especially topics such as family and community historic events, pioneer methods and life, and of course the "weather", a true farmer.

Being a very kind and patient person he cared for his mother until she passed away on April 9, 1969.

To know Alfred was to know his humor and good nature. He always had a smile on his face and a good word until the very end of his life. When asked how he was doing, the answer always was "like an old man'! Never, it seemed did he tire of being outdoors with nature and traveling the countryside looking at crops and the land.

Rosemary Capek, 90 years of age, of Geneva, Nebraska, passed away peacefully during the morning of July 19, 2011. Rosemary was born on May 27, 1921 in Milligan, NE. She was the youngest of three children born to Frederick and Rose Kovanda. Her older siblings were Joyce Glandon (deceased) of Florida, and Glenn Kovanda (deceased) of Milligan, NE. She had a loving childhood and often remembered the horses on their farm. Rosemary frequently remembered her happy and fun loving mother and father. Rosemary lost her mother, due to illness, when she was at the age of twelve. Her Aunt Anna Bulin, who was a nurse at the Mayo Clinic, came home to the farm to help take care of the three children. Her Father, Fred, remarried to Rose's sister, Anna and he was fortunate to have two happy marriages.

During Rosemary's high school years, her family moved to Lincoln, NE. Rosemary graduated from Lincoln High. Rosemary showed a certain initiative through her teen age years as she was born Rose, and she changed her name to Rosemary while she was a teen. She attended University of Nebraska for a teaching degree. She had taught in the elementary schools in Ohiowa, David City, and Beatrice.

Before WWII, she met a very special and gregarious man, John James Capek, from Milligan, NE. She communicated with John for the four years of the war and when he returned to the states, they had a garden wedding. John came from a very musical family. During WWII he was in the Army Band. One of his loves was the Rudy Jay Orchestra, where he was one of the singers. He also played trumpet, clarinet, and saxophone. Rosemary and John enjoyed many Big Band Orchestra dances. They also enjoyed family get-togethers with many relatives as well as many of John's close friends from the war and their families. Rosemary was a wonderful cook and many of her dishes will remain loving memories for her family. Unforgettable were her barbeque spare ribs, duck, pheasant, rabbit, cherried tongue, dumplings, cream puffs, strawberry-rhubarb pie and her many Jello fruit salads, especially her pineapple banana salad. Gardening and canning were also two of Rosemary's avocations. Rosemary and John were very happy with their family life and they were blessed with two children. David John Capek was born in 1948 and Marilyn Rose Capek was born in 1952.

Great sorrow and tragedy occurred on Oct 3, 1960, when John died in a car accident. With the loving support of her parents, Rosemary went back to University of Nebraska to complete her teaching degree. Rosemary's primary concern was for the well-being of her own children during those years as she handled all of the responsibilities of a single parent. Rosemary loved all young children and she taught Kindergarten at Milligan, NE and preschool at Crete, NE. Rosemary was involved with the Methodist Church Ladies Group as well as Garden Clubs.

Rosemary had many personal strengths that carried her through life's challenges. She remained optimistic and caring. Later, she studied photography at Doane College. She also studied Librarian Science and worked at Crete Library. Rosemary spent many hours painting with oils and acrylics. She entered some of her paintings into local contests. She also focused on exercising and staying healthy as she took classes on a regular schedule. She also loved to travel. Her travels included Switzerland, England, France, Austria, and the Czech Republic with her mother, Anna Kovanda, and her sister Joyce Glandon. She also traveled to Florida, the Caribbean, and many states in the Western USA. Rosemary also traveled to Boston and New England multiple times to spend time with Marilyn and her family, Karl, Melissa, and Brett Henrikson. She loved swimming in the lake in New Hampshire with Marilyn's family and picking berries with her grandchildren. Rosemary was also very involved with David's family, with his wife Denise, and children Karel David, Haley, and Morgan Capek. Rosemary was also very kind to animals and had a wonderful rapport with dogs and cats.
Rosemary was always a source of strength and love when it involved her six grandchildren. She spent many hours caring for and loving them. Rosemary was a pure example of passing on unconditional love to her own children as well as to her grandchildren. She had strong values and had a stable sense of right and wrong. Rosemary was gifted with incredible personal strength. She had an inner beauty and guiding light that shone through in her calm, quiet, and kind nature. She was an excellent listener. She was always looking to be uplifting and encouraging. Rosemary looked for the good in each person and situation with amazing authenticity.

She had purity in her thoughts and actions that manifested as endearing empathy and optimism. She had an authentically unselfish nature. She was kind beyond imagination and words. Rosemary was quiet, but very strong in her ability to listen without judging. For all of us who knew her inner strength, it will be a source of inspiration. Her inner beauty and love will shine forever and she will be deeply missed. Her family's love will always be like her wedding china pattern. It was called "Forget-Me-Not." Rosemary's life will be forever with love in the hearts of her children and her loved ones.

Rosemary was preceded in death by her parents; her husband John; sister Joyce Glandon; and brother Glenn Kovanda.

Rosemary is survived by her children David Capek and his wife Denise of Lincoln and Milligan, NE and Marilyn Capek of Winchester, MA, her grandchildren Karel D. Melvin Dean Motis was born to Frank Motis and Helen Kovanda Motis on June 17, 1939, at Exeter, and passed away on Tuesday, July 15, at Warren Memorial Hospital in Friend, at the age of 75 years.

Mel grew up in Exeter and graduated from Exeter Public High School in 1957. He married Carol Jean Hughes on April 23, 1966, and to them three sons were born; Mike, Doug and Jim.

Following graduation, Mel served in the US Army and competed on the Army Rifle team, before going to work for Burlington Northern Railroad. After a few years he came back to the family farm and continued to farm with his father, raising crops, hogs and cattle until 1984 when the farm economy began to struggle. During this time Mel served for 8 years on the Exeter School board. With three growing boys to feed, Mel was forced to work off the farm at various jobs, including Volkmer Construction, Horizontal Boring and Jacques Seed. In 1988 Mel took a job with Boeing Aviation in Wichita, KS, and worked there until the death of his wife, Carol, in 1993. Mel moved back to the family farm and started M and M Tree Service, which he continued to operate until his health began to fail in 2004. Despite his failing physical strength, Melvin continued to help many neighbors and friends with field work in the spring, and with harvest in the fall. He came to love swathing hay for Jason Oldehoeft, and would never turn down an opportunity to mow hay, a beloved activity he continued until May of this year.

Throughout much of his life, Mel was known for his trap shooting skills, and spent many weekends and weeknights shooting with some of his closest friends. Family vacations often included the State Trap Shoot in Doniphan. Over the years, the mass of trophies, guns and other winnings were enough to fill a whole room. He spent many nights reloading shells after working all day, and would always make it to a shoot the next day, wherever it may be.

Mel was an avid hunter and wildlife lover. Many a time he could be found near his canary grass plot watching the pheasants fly in. Growing up he never missed a hunting season, and he passed that passion on to his three boys. Many winter days he could be found cruising the countryside with all three boys in the truck, looking for pheasant, rabbit or quail. For a little sporting fun, he would even take the boys on an occasional coyote hunt on Sundays, despite missing church services.

Mel was also a devoted sports fan, many Saturdays were spent watching college football with his grandsons, but he was especially proud to watch his grand kids in all their sporting events never missing a chance to attend a football, softball, basketball game or wrestling match.

You could always find Mel at an auction, coin sale, having coffee, or just putting around in the "silver bullet" he refused to quit driving. He spent a lot of time at his grandkids' trap shoots, all of which followed in their granddad's footsteps, taking up an interest in the sport.

He loved the Fillmore County Fair hog show, and you could find him sitting somewhere in the stands. He enjoyed watching Thane, Caroline, Gatlin, and Travien show their pigs, and he would never miss one of their shows, regardless of what else needed to be done. He had the best seat in the house this year having passed on the day of the Fillmore County Fair hog show. He was watching from above as they drove several pigs to champion honors.

In his retirement, Mel found a love of cooking and canning, specializing in pickles, pork and beans, and jaternice, which he was proud to share with family and friends. He spent many hours playing pitch, poker, or any game of chance, and enjoyed riding along on any road trip with the boys, whatever the activity or destination.

Over the years Mel met many people that he was blessed to know, a source of great pride for him. Wherever he went someone knew him.

Mel will be remembered for being just a little bit stubborn and stuck in his ways, maybe a little too quick to complain. But he always said, "If you don't tell someone what they are doing wrong, they won't get better."

Mel was preceded in death by his parents, Frank and Helen; wife, Carol; sister, Marlene VanPatte; and brother-in-law William "Blackie" VanPatten.

He is survived by sons, Mike and Brenda, Geneva; Doug and Lori, Exeter; and Jim and Natalie, Geneva; grandsons, Thane, Preston, Colton, Wyatt, Trevian, and Gatlin; granddaughters, Caroline and Toni; brother, Ernest; sister-in-law, Betty Motis; aunt, Clarabelle Smith; and many nieces and nephews.
