Abt 1769 - Abt 1848 (~ 79 years)
Generation: 1
1. | Gabriel Blackburn was born about 1769 in Sampson County, North Carolina; died about 1848 in Sabine County, Texas. Notes:
The following was copied from the notes of Mary Frances SMITH Fisher of Jackson, Mississippi, loaned to Melinda McLemore Strong by Esther McGrew Hardin ca 1998:
New Orleans Christian Advocate October 12, 1859
The following obituary was written by Rev. William Winans, an early Mississippi circuit riding preacher, from information [presumably] told him by Gabriel Blackburn. "G. Blackburn was born in Samson (sic) County, North Carolina, in the year 1769; was carried thence by his parents, at two years old, to Caroline County, S.C. (?). Two other removes brought him near to Georgetown, in the same State, where he married at the age of twenty-one years. In 1793 he removed to the State of Tennessee; in 1797, to the neighborhood of Natchez, in the then Mississippi Territory. His next remove was into West Florida-then a Spanish Province-near where the town of Jackson now stands. Finally, he removed to the neighborhood of Monticello, in the State of Mississippi, where he died several years ago, "rejoicing in the hope of the glory of God."
Notes: Sampson County, NC was formed in 1784 from Duplin, Johnston, & New Hanover counties. Several early Blackburns were in this area, but no proof has been located on who his parents were. The 1790 South Carolina Census verifies his location in that area as he is listed as living in Georgetown District, Prince Fredericks Parish. He was shown as married on the census. No records of him in Tennessee have been discovered. Fisher speculates that Rev. Winans apparently lost contact with Gabriel Blackburn, as he did not show the correct location of death.
THE NATCHEZ COURT RECORDS 1767-1805, ABSTRACTS OF EARLY RECORDS by May Wilson McBee
This book verifies his presence in Natchez. On page 391, (a record of Book B, Land Claims) claim #452, page 345, Gabriel Blackburn and William Dunbar were the witnesses on May 9, 1798 to a deed where John Wylie, of Natchez, sold to David Ferguson 100 square acres for $150
SPANISH WEST FLORIDA INDEX, YEAR 1806
Reference 1209, Film Roll 89 Gabriel Blackburn sold 400 arpents in "New Feliciana" to John Rhea for 400 pesos cash on 9 September 1806. This is the same property listed on page 43 of the above referenced American State Papers. It was a Spanish Grant, and the document was written in Spanish and transcribed for the West Feliciana Parish records. From the transcription: "I, Don Carlos de Grand-Pre', Colonial of the Royal Armies, Military and Civil Governor of the Post and District of Baton Rogue, certify that I know the grantors who signed with Samuel Fulton and Thomas Estevan."
Witnesses: Carlos de Grand-Pre', Samuel Fulton, Thomas Estevan, GABRIEL BLACKBURN, John Scott

NOTORIAL BOOK B, PAGE 13, WEST FELICIANA PARISH, ST. FRANCISVILLE, LOUISIANA shows Gabriel Blackburn as "Constable for the Parish of Feliciana, Territory of Orleans." This document refers to the date "24 July 1812" and was recorded on 10 December 1818. He would have been constable prior to 30 April 1812, when Louisiana became a state, but after Feliciana Parish was formed.

BOUNTY REQUEST from the National Archives 1855- Rejected File #184522 War of 1812, re-examined 9 January 1857 "Gabriel Blackburn Sgt. served in Captain Llewellyn Griffith's Co, LA Militia from 29 Oct until 22 Jan 1815, when he was reduced in ranks and served as private till 24 Mar 1815." (After the Battle of New Orleans, while he was in service in that area, so it is probable he took part in that battle). This bounty request was filed from Milam, Sabine County, Texas on June 23, 1855 by Gabriel's daughter, Elizabeth Blackburn McGrew, widow of Alexander McGrew.
It reads:
"STATE OF TEXAS, COUNTY OF SABINE
On this 18th day of June AD 1855 personally appeared before me the undersigned authority, authorized to administer oaths for general purposes within and for the said county, ELIZABETH MCGREW aged 59 years, a resident of said county and State who being by me duly sworn according to the law on oath declares that, affidavit: Alexander S. Blackburn, Harriet Freeland, Armstrong J. Blackburn, Feliciana Cole, Ferdinand Blackburn, and Frances A. Means are the sole surviving heirs of Gabriel Blackburn, deceased, being (the) deceaseds own children, that the said Gabriel Blackburn died in the year 1848, that said Gabriel Blackburn is the identical person who voluntered a Private in the company commanded by Captain Griffith, name of Col. and no of regiment not recollected, in the war with Great Britian declared by the United States on the 18th day of June 1812, that he voluntered 1813 for and during the war and continued in active service in said war for something near one year and was honorably discharged, thinks at New Orleans. She makes this declaration for the purpose of obtaining Bounty Land, for self and co-heirs, which they may be entitled to under the acts of Congress, heretofore passed, Granting Bounty Lands to certain officers, soldiers who have been engaged in the military services of the United States" she further states that "she has not received a warrant for Bounty Land under the act of Congress nor made any other application therefor is this Behalf." Signed Elizabeth McGrew Witnessed by Gideon A. Norford and James M. Weathered, residents of Sabine County. who declared that they were well acquantied with Gabriel Blackburn, and that he died in Sabine in 1848.
Note: The clerks lined out the names of: Harriet Freeland, Armstrong J. Blackburn, Feliciana Cole, and Ferdinand Blackburn, presumably because they had never been to Texas and were not personally known to the clerks.
In a letter from Mary Fisher to Esther McGrew Hardin of San Antonio, she asks "Do you have the reference that states "Gabriel Blackburn had the reputation for making the best corn whiskey in the Mississippi Territory?" Someone told me about this but they could not locate it and they could not remember where they found it. I would love to have a copy...I did locate one statement in "Mississippi as a Providence, Territory and State" by Gov. C.C. Claiborne that might be what they were thinking about. 'The Creek Indians stole a large lot of whiskey belonging to Parson Blackburn.' This was in the chapter "Natchez in the Olden Times", page 528. It went on to say he was an eminent "Presbyterian" clergyman, so I am not sure if it was Gabriel or not. Do you have the New Orleans Christian Advocate article? It is the most fascinating thing that I have found. It tells how Gabriel plotted to kill a man before he became a Christian. Let me know if you need it."
In her reply, Esther McGrew Hardin cited the book "Annals of Tennessee" by Ramsey, in which there is a story of Gideon Blackburn, who established with Samuel Doak a Presbyterian college, and became a noted Presbyterian preacher. Esther stated that this must be the Pastor Blackburn who had the stash of whiskey stolen by the Indians. She noted other references to Gideon Blackburn in the Mississippi History by Claiborne and in "Tennessee Cousins" by Worth S. Ray. Esther believes it possible that Gideon and Gabriel were related, and this might be why Gabriel went to Tennessee.
According to Blanche Finley Toole of Sabine County, Texas, Gabriel Blackburn's home was just west of the Old Milam cemetery and his Gristmill was located on Borreagus Creek. This property later (much later) became the property of the John W. Allen family. Allen descendants still live there and know where the old lost cemetery is. According to an article in the August 26, 1965 SABINE COUNTY REPORTER entitled "Mrs. Etta Nichols Speaks on History of Low's Chapel.. "Long leaf virgin timber grew prolifically in the vicinity at the Allen Saw Mill on Palo Guacho Creek."
Gabriel may have been buried in the Old Milam cemetery, or his body may have been returned to Columbia, Mississipi to be interred on his old homeplace on Highway 13, on property owned in 1963 by a Mr. Polk.

(Medical):The child of a direct female descendant of Elizabeth Blackburn (Nina Fuller, the daughter of Viola Fullen and granddaughter of Jane Allen) had their mtDNA analyzed, and it was predicted as H, with only one difference from the Cambridge Reference Sequence, 16519C, which is a fast moving marker. Mitochondrial haplogroup H is a predominantly European haplogroup that participated in a population expansion beginning approximately 20,000 years ago. Today, about 30% of all mitochondrial lineages in Europe are classified as haplogroup H. It is rather uniformly distributed throughout Europe suggesting a major role in the peopling of Europe, and descendant lineages of the original haplogroup H appear in the Near East as a result of migration. Future work will better resolve the distribution and historical characteristics of this haplogroup.
On her Clan Helena website, Amelia Reimer writes that, "Whether just by chance or by the guiding hand of natural selection we do not know, but Helena's clan has grown to become the most widespread and successful of the Seven Daughters of Eve. Her children have reached every shore, settled every forest and crossed every mountain range. Helena's descendants can be found from the Alps in the South to the Scottish Highlands and the Norwegian fjords in the North, and as far east as the Urals and the Russian steppes. Helena was born about 20,000 years ago on the strip of land that joins France and Spain, near what is now Perpignan. She belonged to a family of hunters, who harvested the rich oyster beds in the lagoons of the Carmargue to supplement their diet of meat. Helena's clan arrived in Europe from the Middle East, pushing their way along the Mediterranean, constrained to the narrow strip of land that was still habitable. Not long after she was born, the glaciers that covered the Pyrenees, which Helena could see on a clear day only thirty miles from her camp, began to draw back as, little by little, the summers grew warmer. Some of her clan moved south of the mountains, up the valley of the Ebro to the West to reach the lands of the Basque, where they remain to this day. The most adventurous of her children took advantage of the climatic improvements and journeyed ever northwards to join the great movement of hunters across the plains of France. We know that they reached England around 12,000 years ago because DNA recovered from a young male skeleton found in Gough's Cave in Somerset shows that he too belonged to the clan of Helena. [Same cave as Cheddar Man, but 3,000 years older.] "

3. | Alexander S. Blackburn (1.Gabriel1) was born about 1797 in Tennessee; died on 2 Feb 1863 in St. Tammany Parish, Louisiana. Notes:
Mary Frances Smith Fisher shows that he servied in Pvt. L. C. Griffith's Co, Louisiana Militia during the War of 1812, enlisting on Oct. 29, 1814 and being discharged on 24 Mar 1815. She also notes that the family can be found on the Marion County, Mississippi census in 1830 and 1840, and in Washington Parish, LA in 1850.
His widow, Martha. applied for a pension based on his service during the War of 1812. He was shown as marrying Martha on 18 Jun 1820. He enlisted for the war on 29 Oct 1814, and was discharged on 24 mar 1815. He died in St. Tammany Parish, LA on 2 Feb 1863. Martha died in 1889. The Pension number is WC 30613, the Bounty Land Number 39669 80 50 and 10809 80 55.
He sold a tract of land on 27 Mar 1817 to James Scott Jrs. in East Feliciana Parish (Notorial Records, Book A, Page 319, East Feliciana Parish, Clinton, LA). Book B, page 30, of the West Feliciana Parish Notorial Records, St. Francisville, LA, shows that he and his wife Marry Ann sold property to John Randolph.
Bettye Bragg Wagstaff showed him as born in Feliciana Parish, LA, which contradicts the census information of Tennessee.

5. | Armstrong Irvine "Joel" Blackburn (1.Gabriel1) was born on 11 Oct 1801 in Feliciana Parish, Louisiana; died on 19 Sep 1867 in Marion County, Mississippi. Notes:
Mary Frances Smith Fisher provided the following transcription of his obituary from the NEW ORLEANS CHRISTIAN ADVOCATE, 9 Nov 1867
Departed this life, September 19, 1867 in the town of Columbia, Miss., Doctor A.J. Blackburn, a local deacon of the Methodist Episcopal Church, South.
Bro. Blackburn was born in East Feliciana Parish, October 11, 1801. He was the son of one of the first settlers in that part of the state; and his father before him was a prominent and useful local preacher in the church.
The doctor having embraced religion at a very early age, commenced preaching when 19 years old, and the practice of medicine at 23; and thro' life maintained an unspotted reputation as a minister and physician, administering alike to the souls and bodies of men, with such faithfulness, zeal and kindness, as won for him an enviable position and a consecrated remembrance in the hearts and minds of those who knew him.
In 1866, he took work in the Mississippi Conference and was appointed to Covington, La, where his gentlemanly bearing, polished urbanity and deep piety endeared him to all his flock. Tho' possessed of considerable preaching abilities, he had to mourn to see so little fruit of his toils; and tho' like the prophet, he had to exclaim "Lord who hath believed our report;" yet his record was on high, for he was one of those who "signed and cried for the abominations of the people."
At the close of the year, his health begining to fail, and feeling his work nearly finished, he returned to Washington Parish, La.; but here he was not idle. By day and by night, as long as he was able, he attended the sick, and filled an appointment monthly, on a circuit left without a preacher, till being called to attend the Columbia Court, he was taken sick on the way, was conveyed to the town where he had long resided. In his brief illness exclaimed, in relation to eternity, "all is bright." Then requesting to be carried to the gallery, took a last look at his old home; gave his parting blessing to his son of many prayers, and calmly and resignedly breather his sould into the bosom of his God. "The righteous are taken from the evil to come." G. T. Vickers.
Per Mary Frances Smith Fisher, he went to California during the Gold Rush. A son that was with him was killed by Indians per a tale from the Cole line of the family. In 1850 he was not located on the Marion County, MS census, possibly already in California, as a Marion County probate record was filed on 18 Feb 1851 noting that "Said Armstrong J. Blackburn, who is now in the State of California...." His wife, Susan, can be found in Marion County, Mississippi in 1850, page 401, Family #274/278, living alone.
She also noted that in MARION COUNTY MISSISSIPPI MARRIAGE BOOKD C, PAGES 7-9, the credentials of Armstrong J. Blackburn (as a minister) were recorded and they were accepted by the probate court of Marion County in the July term 1837. He married many early Marion county couples, including his brother Ferdinand B. Blackburn to Miss Sarah Tyner.

Richard also had a letter in his posseision in which Ferdinand was addressed as Major, and he therefore believed he was an officer in the State Militia, but could not find a record of service. Per the book THE SOUTHERN McGREWS GREW and Alley Moody of Natchez, Mississippi, James and his wife, Betsy Lott were married in 1835 in Marion County, MS. They moved to Sabine Co, TX in the mid 1840's with his family, but moved back to Perry Co, MS by 1850. On the 1860 census, Jame's widowed mother, Elizabeth (Blackburn) McGrew, was living with them. He was a Civil War veteran. After the War, they moved to Covington Co, MS and then to Mobile, AL. He was in the produce business. They had 8 children. Betsy died on 22 Nov 1880, and was buried in the Wainwright Lot of the Montgomery cemetery in Mobile. He returned to Covington, MS, to lived with his son Leonard, and died prior to 1891. He is buried in the Old Williamsburg cemetery west of Collins, Covington Co, MS.
His middle name has been shown as both Alexander and as Harrison by different sources. On census records, he was listed simply as James.
James A. McGrew was a resident of Mobile, Alabama, living on Spring Hill Road between Broad and Pine in 1875, as per the 1875 City Directory

13. | John Gabriel McGrew (2.Elizabeth2, 1.Gabriel1) was born about 1821 in Marion County, Mississippi; died about 1857 in Sabine County, Texas. Notes:
Per Blanche Toole of Sabine County, he was a veteran of the Mexican War. THE SOUTHERN McGREWS GREW shows he mustered out on 14 Oct 1846 at Milam.
Could this be the John McGrue in Capt. Cameron's company in 1841? "J. McGrue pvt. enlisted in Capt. Ewen Cameron's Company in Texas. From ATTACK AND COUNTER ATTACK THE TEXAS MEXICO FRONTIER 1842 by Joseph Milton Nance p.630.
Per H. Huson's book "Refugio" Capt. Cameron, and many of the men in his company were taken prisoner and marched to Mexico City. Of the 170 men captured, it was decreed 1 in 10 were to be shot. The men were forced to draw beans, and the 17 men who drew black were the ones shot. Capt. Cameron was so hated that he was shot anyway.
On the 1850 census, he is shown as the head of the household, after his father had died the previous year. Wynema McGrew quoted Texas General Land Office records in the possession of Dr. Johnie L. Reeves "on the 17th day of May 1856, in Sabine County Texas, John G. McGrew, administrator of the Estate of Gabriel Blackburn, gave affidavit that the Headright Certificate for 1280 acres had been lost or destroyed."
He may have also received a land grant in Shelby county, above Sabine, in the 1840s (tax roll records).

18. | Adaline McGrew (2.Elizabeth2, 1.Gabriel1) was born about 1838 in Marion County, Mississippi; and died. Notes:
Wynema McGrew noted that she appears to have married first an Odam/Odom. Ester McGrew Hardin speculated that Adaline was visiting some MEANS relatives in DeWitt County and met the Odams who lived nearby.
Bettye Bragg Wagstaff informed me that Mary Fisher mentioned a possible connection between the Odom Family and the Blackburn/McGrew family. On the LDS family group sheet, an Odom is listed as a possible husband of Adeline McGrew. In Sabine County in 1850, the Odom family lived nearby both the John and Harriet (McGrew) Partin family and the family of of John Wooldridge Allen and Caroline (McGrew??) Allen. In 1835, there is an Odom living near the William Means family (whom according to Blanche Toole, was the first sherriff of Sabine County). William Addison Means was married to Francis Amelia Blackburn, the sister of Elizabeth Blackburn McGrew. He was also a member of the Congress of the Republic of Texas in both 1843 and 1845 from DeWitt County.
The Means family moved from Sabine to DeWitt County, taking along with Frances (Tyner) Blackburn, who died in Gonzalez, TX ca. 1853. The Odom families do not appear again on the Sabine County census after 1850.
Hardin also found a later marriage record, showing that on 3 Sept 1870 in Robertson County, Texas, Adaline married Miles KELLY. Hardin may be conflating two different families, however. A very large Miles and Adeline Kelly family can be found in Robertson county on the 1880 federal census. However, the Adeline who was enumerated with Miles Kelly in 1880 was younger (born ca 1845 versus 1838), born in Georgia vs. Mississippi, and Mulatto versus White.

21. | Susan Francis Blackburn (3.Alexander2, 1.Gabriel1) was born on 8 May 1838 in Marion County, Mississippi; died on 4 Dec 1924 in Texas; was buried in Bronson Cemetery, Bronson, Sabine County, Texas. Notes:
Email from Bettye Bragg Wagstaff:
Susan Blackburn was the daughter of Alexander S. Blackburn and his second wife, Martha Cole.
I have been in touch with a Bickham descendant, and she gave me info on the Bickhams. It seems that Susan and her parents moved to Louisiana (Can't remember the parish right now) where Alexander died and Susan married an unknown Bickham just before the Civil War. Evidently this Bickham was killed in the war, because she then married James Bailey (AKA Baylie) and they came to Texas bringing her two Bickham children and her mother Martha Blackburn. They settled in Sabine County and had several Bailey children. James Bailey did not appear on the census after 1870 so I just assumed he died. Wrong! According to the many Bailey descendents living around here today, James just went back to Louisiana, found him another woman and raised another family. The Bickham children were Hardy Alexander Bickham and Zurada. Hardy is buried in the Rosevine Cemetery and Zurada in Bronson. I have been trying to find out who is buried beside Zurada. No luck so far.
Susan's mother, Martha is buried in Brookland, she died in 1889 while living there with grand- children.
Jackie Bickham writes that Susan Blackburn and her second husband Jasper Newton Bailey were the parents of 1.Hope Bailey 2.Sedonia Bailey 3.Trust Bailey 4.James Franklin Bailey
Family/Spouse: ??? Bickham. ??? was born before 1820; died after 1861. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

42. | Alexander Paxton McGrew (9.James3, 2.Elizabeth2, 1.Gabriel1) was born on 1 Mar 1836 in Perry County, Mississippi; died on 29 Dec 1886 in East Feliciana Parish, Louisiana; was buried in Cemetery of Buhler Plains, Zachary, East Baton Rouge Parish, Louisiana. Notes:
Per "The Southern McGrews Grew", he was a Civil War veteran and was captured, but as it was near the end of the war, he was not held long. He lived in Covington Co, MS until the late 1870's, but had to leave after he and a group of men were involved in the murder of Luke Broom. When the law came to arrest him, he asked if he could first feed his oxen, and they consented. He escaped. His brother, Leonard, loaded the family up and took them to Louisiana and they hid out near Baton Rogue. They had 11 children, and he died on 19 December 1886, and was buried in Knox cemetery, The Plains, East Feliciana Parish, LA. His wife died of pneumonia at the home of her son, Robert, on 10 November, 1895 and was buried near Alexander.
Wynema McGrew writes that he enlisted in the Confederate State Army on either 10 Feb 1862 at Williamsburg, Covington County, Mississippi or 1 Feb 1862 at Handsboro, Harrison County, Mississippi. He was a sergeant in Company B, Fourth Cavalry under Capt. Norman. He was paroled in Gainsville, Alabama on 12 May 1865.
Much of the information on this family was supplied by Allye Moody of Natchez, Mississippi

43. | Mary Ann McGrew (9.James3, 2.Elizabeth2, 1.Gabriel1) was born about 1838 in Perry County, Mississippi; and died. Notes:
Wynema McGrew writes that she married second Dock Hall. In the 1870 Covington County, MS census, her Lott children were listed in the home of D. G. and Mary Ann Hall. On the 1880 census, the children were listed by the last name Hall, not Lott, with the family residing in Smith County, MS. In Smith County, in 1900, a Glenions Hall can be found, without wife Mary Ann or any of the children enumerated in 1900, but with seven younger Hall children, all born after 1880.
Mary married Absalom Lott about 1857. Absalom was born about 1837 in Mississippi; and died. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

44. | Robert L. McGrew (9.James3, 2.Elizabeth2, 1.Gabriel1) was born about 1840 in Perry County, Mississippi; died on 6 Apr 1863 in Georgia. Notes:

|
45. | Leonard Bradford McGrew (9.James3, 2.Elizabeth2, 1.Gabriel1) was born on 25 Mar 1842 in Marion County, Mississippi; died on 21 May 1903 in Covington County, Mississippi; was buried in Saint James Catholic Cemetery, Bassfield, Jefferson Davis County, Mississippi. Notes:
Wynema McGrew notes that Leonard was not easy to get along with, and had been asked by neighbors to move. He was rumored to have killed men, outside of combat, during the Civil War. Bruce Aultman, an attorney living in the Victory community in Lamar County suggested that Leonard was a Jayhawk (Union sympathizer) during the Civil War. He did serve in the Confederate Army, however, enlisting in Capt. H R McLaurin's Company (Co F, 27th Regiment, Mississippi Infantry) on 26 Aug 1861, the same day R. L. McGrew enlisted. He was discharged in Rome, Georgia on 11 Apr 1863 due to wounds to his hip and knee while at Shelbyville, Tennessee. He later served in Company E, 3rd Battalion, Mississippi Reserve Calvary from which he was paroled on May 16, 1865. He was a freemason and baptist for most of his life, but converted to Catholicism late in life, due to his many transgressions and the influence of his eldest daughter, Susanna, who had converted when she married, and Leonard was buried in the Catholic portion of the Williamsburg Cemetery. The cemetery name, per Find A Grave, was the Saint James Catholic Cemetery in Bassfield, Mississippi.
His FindAGrave memorial page, crated by Fred Rose, has a photo of him in uniform and with a bayonet.

74. | Jane Allen (15.Caroline3, 2.Elizabeth2, 1.Gabriel1) was born on 5 Dec 1850 in Sabine County, Texas; died on 6 Jan 1926 in Sabine County, Texas; was buried in Rosevine Cemetery, Rosevine, Sabine County, Texas. Notes:
Her middle initial is shown sometimes as C and sometimes as K. It is not known what her actual middle name was.
Nina Fuller always said that her grandmother, Jane (Allen) Fullen was "half Indian." It has not been proved if this is true, or merely a legend. The name ALLEN appears to be of common use among the Cherokees, and perhaps this is where either the actual Indian blood, or legend of Indian blood, came from. The mtDNA of a child of Nina Fuller, a direct female descendant of Jane, was classified as H. This is the most common mtDNA in Europe, and not one associated with Native American lineage. If Jane was part Indian, it was through her father's family, and not in her direct maternal line.
There is a photo of Jane Fullen, presumably taken shortly before her death in 1926, in a black silk bonnet. This bonnet was given by Jane to her granddaughter Nina (Fuller) McLemore. Nina's daughter, Evon Tisdale gave the bonnet to Melinda (McLemore) Strong.
(Research):A photo of her headstone on Find A Grave appears to be incorrect in listing her birthday as 5 December 1849. Blanche Finley Toole showed this instead as 5 December 1850, supported by census records below:

*Jane is the daughter of J.W. Allen by wife Caroline. Jane was born in December 1850, and the 1850 census was taken in October 1850. Therefore, Caroline would have been between 6 and 7 months pregnant at the time of the census. The 1860 census was taken in June, before Jane had reached her 10th birthday.
#The mother of Susan Allen is not known. It does not seem likely that she is the daughter of John's second wife, Margaret Harvey Allen, who had moved back home with their one year old daughter, Mary Allen. Did John have a daughter by a woman other than his then wife, perhaps leading to their separation? Or is Susan perhaps a niece or other family member? Or are Mary/Susan the same child, listed in both households?
His former wife, Margaret, and his daughter Mary are living in another household in 1860, as follows:

It is not known which of the families he mentioned were trying to verify information, or for what purpose the deposition was prepared.
He stated that his father was Irvin Armstrong Blackburn, son of Ferdinand Boon Blackburn and Sarah Elizabeth Tyner, and that his mother was Amanda Jane McGrew was the daughter of William McGrew and Dorinda Lott. William McGrew was born in Covington Co, Mississippi about 1815. He was the son of John (Jack) McGrew.
