George Stronge

Notes:

It appears that George Strong, a Tailor, originally resided in Chardstock, Dorset, later moving about five miles north to Chard, Somerset. Dorset and Somerset are both maritime counties in the southwest of England. According to Peskett, Chardstock was in Dorset until transferred to the county of Devon in 1896, but remains in the Diocese of Salisbury.

July 13, 1604 - "The water in George Stronge's ditch is not able to pass but run out in the way and he must scower the same."

1629 - "We do present George Stronge for that he dothe sell fuell furses in the commons and carry them into another parish and burn them contrary to the customs of the our manor, therefore he is fined ten shillings; and that George Stronge hath pulled downe a barne builded upon posts upon his cottage and carryed the tymber into another manor and hath also rooted upp certayne apple trees growing uppon his said cottage and carryed the same out of the manor".

1631, 1632, 1633 - Fined for not cleaning his ditch.

May 20, 1635 - Presentment of the death of George Stronge since the previous court and that he was tenant of TWO COTTAGES in Chardstock towne, to which Thomas Stronge was thereupon admitted as the next tenant. [Robin Bush, pub. By M&J Clearinghouse]

1636 - "That George Stronge, tenant since the last court to the cottage in Chardstock town and doth happen to the lord for a death duty, and that Thomas Strong is the next tenant".

The March 2000 SFAA Newsletter contains a brief article by Doug Strong (gnorts@erols.com) about the "Possible Huguenot Background of Chardstock Strongs." As a professor of church history, he discussed his suspicions with a local historian (H. Mary Parmiter) in Chardstock, England. It seems that the Strongs were likely Huguenot refugees who had earlier fled France due to religious persecution. The Huguenots, along with the Puritans, were both groups of Calvinistic Protestants who held very similar theological views. Thus, though not proven definitively, it appears that the Strongs were Huguenots who left France, became Puritans in England, and then left for New England--people who were compelled to flee two times for their faith. In support of this theory, Mary Parmiter wrote a letter to Doug Strong in which she noted that "The earliest spellings of "Strong" in our records are "Strang" or "Strange," so there seems little doubt it comes from "Stranger." [The old French word for foreign or alien is "estrange."] The Huguenot massacre of 1572 certainly triggered off the arrival here [Chardstock] of many refugees but, by their very wish to keep anonymity, detailed records are just about nonexistent.

A tailor. Married to Joanna BAGGE. They had five daughters: Maria, Elizabeth, Lavinia, Jane and Sarah, and one son, the Rev. James Strong.

Rev. John Pitt, Vicar of Chardstock (1627-1645), Warden of Wadham College, Oxford befriended James Stronge 'a poor tailor of Chardstock who wrought for a groat a day, his pottage and bread and cheese". Rev. Pitt sent him to New Inn College, Oxford. In 1645, James returned to Chardstock and turned his mentor out of the vicarage and carried off his books and goods to his own living.

Governor Caleb Strong, in 1779, wrote the following article about his ancestor, the Elder John Strong. It was noted by Marilyn Maxfield King that this was published in the "New England Historical and Genealogical Register," Volume 23, in 1869.

"Elder John Strong, was born and lived in England, near Taunton in Somersetshire. His father was, Richard (sic) Strong who died when John was small. His grandfather, who was Roman Catholic lived to be very old, but died before his grandson left England. Elder John came to America in the year 1630 in the ship Mary and John in company with Mr Warham, Maverick, Mason, Clap and arrived at Nantasket on the 30th. of May that year and settled in Dorchester. John married his first wife in England, she died on the passage or short time after arriving, leaving two young children, the youngest of which died in two months after it's mother. John married second to Abigail Ford, a sister of Capt. Clap's wife, at Dorchester in 1635/36. John and second wife moved from Dorchester to Windsor, Ct. and with four others was appointed superintendant of bringing settlers to that place. He lived in Windsor for several years than moved to Northampton in the year 1659 where he died April 14, 1699 about 94 years of age. He was the first ruling Elder of the Church of Northampton. Abigail Ford Strong died 6 July 1688. A sister (Eleanor) of John's came with him from England and married a man by the name of Dean. John Strong had 16 children besides that which died young."

Although Gov. Caleb Strong believed that Elder John Strong arrived to New England in 1630 aboard the "Mary and John," Elder John may actually arrived on the "Hopewell" in 1635. He was listed as "Jon STRONGE for himself and family, and goods" in the Index to Ships & Passengers to the American Colonies, Exchequer K.R. 1618-1668 copied from Port Book E 190/876/1. The "Hopewell" sailed from Weymouth, 8 May 1635. It is also possible that, as a youth of 20 that he came with the Winthrop Fleet on the Mary & John, later returning to England to and married first wife Margerie DEANE, and permanently emigrating to the Massachussets Bay Colony aboard the Hopewell with members of the Deane family.

Benjamin Dwight quotes church records from Northampton to explain how he obtained his office and title as Elder John Strong: "After solemn and extraordinary seeking to God for his direction and blessing, the church chose John Strong ruling elder, and William Holton, deacon. They were ordained 13: 3 mo: '63" (or June 13, 1663, O.S., or N.S. June 24, 1663--the year beginning then in March)." (Dwight, p 16).

John was a tanner and spent his life in Windsor, CT. He was a man of prominence in the affairs of that city. His family was not mentioned in the will of Elder John Strong having received, along with his brother Return Strong, the Tanneries in Windsor as his inheritance portion. The inventory of the estate of John Strong, was taken Feb 28, 1697/8; it names the children as John Strong, age 32, Jacob, 25; Josiah, 19; Mary STANLY (sic), 40, and Hannah HOPKINS, 36. A farmer at Northampton until 1709, when at the age of 70 years and upwards he removed with his family to Coventry, Ct., where 24 years afterwards he d. May 22, 1733, aged 96; during the years 1677-8 & 9, he was paid 18 shillings a year for blowing the trumpet on Sunday to summon the people to church...Notwithstanding his three marriages spent 33 years as a widower, and 61 unmarried. Kit #7257 was through Jedediah>Preserved>Enoch Strong

Kit #15744 represents an interesting case. The participant, surnamed "Dotson", is a member of a family group which has been "quietly told" their parents were the children of Jedediah Strong VII. With the exception of this family legend, there has been no other proof of the relationship until now. There is an exact match in the first 12 markers (STR) of Kit #15744 with the first 12 markers of both Kits #6811 & 7257. As previously anticipated, the second 13 markers (PP3) matched the "Assumed New England Strong Haplotype", marking members of the Elder John Strong lineages.
