Asahel Strong (1715-1776) was a patriot of Torrington where he died. Asahel Strong jr., (1750-1831), served in the Connecticut Light Horse. He was born in Torrington, Conn. ; died in Peru, N.Y.

Asahel jr married Martha Barber. Their child Theodosia Strong 1781-1858 married Phineas Bateman Olcott 1775-1845 Clinton County NY. When she wrote Benjamin Dwight, in reply to his query about the genealogy of the Jones family, Betsey had the following poignant observation "My husband has been dead 26 years; I am now 82 years old; I have no children; I am the last leaf on the family tree." (Dwight, p. 159).

Benjamin Dwight writes that "He obtained his education by his own efforts. He was grad. at Jefferson Med. Coll., in Philadelphia, March, 1827, and in 1833 went to Texas and became a surgeon in the Texas Army, and was in the battle of San Jacinto (Apr. 21, 1836). After Texas became a republic he was sent as minister to the U.S. govt. He was also representative and senator in the Congress of Texas, secretary of state, and President of the Republic (Dec. 1844 - Feb. 1846). During his administration the public finances were managed with great skill and economy; old debts were all paid off and a surplus laid by (beside meeting current expenses), sufficient to provide for all needful expenditures for some years to come. The frontiers were efficiently protected against Mexicans and Indians. Law was enforced and justice, civil and criminal, was maintained. No expedition for glory or plunder occurred; immigration was large and active; the public lands were husbanded; common school education was promoted; and a state constitution was formed by a convention called for the purpose by President Jones, and made the fundamental law of the state by subsequent annexation of Texas to the United States. He was a zealous mason and was one of the five masons to organize the first masonic lodge in Texas. He was the first grand master of the Lodge, for which a dispensation was procured from the Grand Lodge of Louisiana. From 1846 to 1858, he resided on his farm which he called Barrington, engaged in agriculture and education of his children."
