At the time of the 1920 Census, Antonie was listed as the head of household. Her sons were listed as Jim (21) , Mike (16), John (9) and Joe (7). Also living in the household was Antonie mothers, the 76 year old Josefa . Jim and Mike were both employed as laborers at stores. (1920 Census). She loved to crochet and raise a garden and flowers. Antonie married Vaclav Halama before 1899 in Bohemia. Vaclav was born on 30 Aug 1873 in Zichovice, Bohemia; died on 22 May 1948 in Fillmore County, Nebraska; was buried in Bohemian National Cemetery (Milligan South), Milligan, Fillmore County, Nebraska. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

According to the 1930 Federal Census, Michael J. Halama, age 26, was living with his wife of three years, Olga Berthy age 18, and their two children, Richard Dale, age 2, and Irma, age 1. Olga was born in Nebraska, as were both of her parents.

Matej married Olga A. Sobotka before 1927. Olga (daughter of Joseph Sobotka and Anna Burda) was born on 18 Jun 1911 in Saline County, Nebraska; died in Mar 1981 in Stratton, Hitchcock County, Nebraska. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

John came to Nebraska while still a toddler, and grew up in Milligan. At age 16 he went to work for the County, and then for W.A. Biba Construction for some 17 years. After his marriage, he lived on farms near Milligan and Friend. John and Agnes moved back to Milligan in 1958, where John opened the Halama Blacksmith and Repair shop with his son. (Milligan, 280).

Jan married Agnes Ann Hendrych on 19 Nov 1935 in Wilber, Saline County, Nebraska. Agnes (daughter of Jaroslav Hendrych and Anezka "Agnes" Fuchs) was born on 17 Nov 1914 in Milligan, Fillmore County, Nebraska; died on 19 Oct 2001 in Milligan, Fillmore County, Nebraska. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

Joseph attended the Milligan Public School, but did not graduate. He had to drop out to help support his family. He and his older brother John were living in the household of Fred BIBA at the time of the 1930 census, along with five or six other Czech laborers. Joe was drafted on March 24, 1942, and took his basic training at Camp Barkley, Texas. He was part of the Normandy invasion, landing on Utah Beach on D-Day, at which time he was wounded. He was hospitilized in England for many months afterwords. The medics were unable to assist him until the next day. He was awarded the Purple Heart, Good Conduct Medal, Infantry Combat Badge, ETO Ribbon with two bronze stars, Victory Ribbon, American Theatre Ribbon, Overseas Bar, three year service bar, and Bronze Arrowhead. After the war, Joseph worked in road construction, which took he and his family all over Nebraska and parts of Kansas. They spent the winters in Milligan with Evelyn's mother, Lillian FRYCEK. Joseph married Evelyn Marie Frycek on 10 Dec 1946. Evelyn (daughter of Albert R. Frycek and Lillian Kotas) was born on 28 Jan 1916 in Milligan, Fillmore County, Nebraska; died on 27 Mar 1976 in Fillmore County, Nebraska; was buried in Bohemian National Cemetery (Milligan South), Milligan, Fillmore County, Nebraska. Irma Jo-Ann Volkmer, 80, of Fairmont, died Tuesday (09/08/09) at Fairview Manor in Fairmont. She was born on (10/08/28) on a farm near Milligan, Neb. to Mike and Olga (Sobotka) Halama. She was the youngest of two children. Irma married Dallas Volkmer on (12/28/47) in Geneva, Neb. They resided on a farm north of Exeter, Neb. until 1968, at which time they moved to a farm near Waco, Neb., where they resided until 1999. After Dallas's death in 1999, Irma moved to McCool Jct. to be near her family.
She is survived by her son, Jerry (Sue) Volkmer, McCool Jct.; daughters, Linda (Alan) Galaway, McCool Jct.; and Kaye (Jim) Weakland, Grand Island; eight grandchildren; and four great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; her brother, Richard; her husband, Dallas; and her daughter, Debra.
Funeral services 10 a.m. Friday (09/11/09) at United Church of Christ in Exeter, Nebraska, with burial at the Exeter Cemetary. Visitation will be at the Farmer Funeral Home in Exeter Thursday (09/10/09) from 1 p.m. to 8 p.m., with the family receiving visitors from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.
