Generation: 1

  1. 1.  Abraham Macklemore was born after 1664 in Scotland; died after 1735 in Bertie County, North Carolina.

    Notes:

Abraham Macklemore (was) settled on the banks of the Roanoke River, just across the Virginia-North Carolina line following its establishment by the Byrd Commission in 1728. (James L. McLemore, III, p 36). He appeared to have married first the daughter of Abraham EVANS, who owned land near Richard WASHINGTON and who devised land to Abraham Macklemore, presumably his son-in-law. However, EVANS' daughter apparently died childless not too long after her father, leaving Macklemore disinherited of his 70 acre devise, but free to marry, about 1720, his second wife Mary YOUNG. (James L. McLemore, III pp. 37 - 38).

There are some deed records in Bertie County, North Carolina (from which Northampton County was formed in 1741) for Abraham. This is further evidence that their (Abraham and James) earlier deed records may have been in Prince George and thus may not have survived. Besides all of James' lands, Abraham may have already owned some of his lands as well (perhaps acquired while it was still part of Virginia) by the time the first North Carolina deed involving him was recorded. This deed, dated August 11, 1730, was from Abraham Macklemore to William Person for two acres on Stonehouse (or Beaver Dam) Creek in Northwest Parish of Bertie Precinct (Bertie Deed Book C, p 354). This land was probably cut from land he already owned, but he shortly thereafter acquired a sizeable tract of 625 acres from Barnebee MACKINNE, a former Isle of Wight County, Virginia resident. This plantation was located in Northwest Parish of Bertie County (where both men claimed residence), on the North side of the old Morratock River, on the old COUNTRY (not county) line, which formed the northern boundary line of the property. This was obviously a reference to the old colonial boundry before the 1728 survey moved it northward. Five years later, he purchased 100 acres on "Pigeons Ruste Creek" on Morratock River, at "old country line", from Anthony GANT of Edgecombe, by deed dated May 8, 1734 (Bertie Deed Book D, p, 155). (James L. McLemore, III, pp 40-41).

Abraham's Will was signed 4 Jan 1735 and lists three children Atkins, Young and William in addition to his wife Mary. Original Will on file in NC State Archives.

    Dated 4 Jan 1735, Nov Ct 1736

The following information about Abraham was posted to the McLemore GenForum by Gayle Zent in January, 1999:

The second son was Abraham, his will was written in 1736, 3 yrs after his brother's will was written. He left 200 acres of upper plantation , a manor plantation, helped lay out Warren Co NC & became a wealthy landowner. We have records in 1778 that enters 500 & then 200 acres in Biredie Co to Abraham. He was a commisioner in the county of Warrenton in 1779 & he had a gun factory during the Revolutionary War.

    http://genforum.genealogy.com/mclemore/messages/87.html

And this was posted at http://www.unsolvedancestry.com/awards.asp:

Abraham could have been married to an Evans, daughter of Abraham Evans and Elizabeth Lucas before 1719. "Abraham Evans wrote his will in 1708, died (and his will was probated) in 1712, in which he willed 70 acres to Abraham Macklemore, and the heirs of his body (meaning on condition that he have children [implied by his wife, Evans' daughter]). Abraham had no children by her, so he lost the land, and instead moved to NC with his brother, and either after or more likely before doing so he married as his second wife Mary Young, mother of his three sons." - Mary Young (Abraham's wife) may be related to an earlier Mary (Cary) Young, daughter of John Cary of Surry Co. VA.

(Medical):Two descendants of Abraham, both men still bearing the McLemore surname, participated in the MORRISON DNA Study.

    http://www.geneticcousins.com/morrison/

The main purpose of this study was to prove that the immigrant founders of this family in America, James Macklemore and Abraham Macklemore, were brothers. If brothers, then the y-DNA of the direct male descendants of both men would match. However, Instead of proving that all McLemore men? at least those that can trace their ancestry back to an early southern McLemore forebearer---share the same DNA, it appears that we have AT LEAST two distinct yDNA groups, with three more potential distinct yDNA McLemore lines. The first group of McLemore DNA is the largest, with ten members, in the R1b1a2 haplogroup. Two of the nine can trace their lines back to Abraham Macklemore, the husband of Mary Young and probable brother of James Macklemore. Another member (m268) can trace himself back to Moses McLemore b. ca. 1738 who is thought to be a son of Wright McLemore, grandson of William Macklemore, and great-grandson of immigrant James McLemore, thought to be the brother of Abraham. If both these members are correct in their paper trails, and if Amos can be indeed be proven to be a great-grandson of James Macklemore, then the assumption that James and Abraham have a common paternal ancestor is likely correct as descendants of both men share the same yDNA. The R1b1 DNA haplogroup, is the most common in Western Europe.

Bought 320 acres on Lyons Creek, on Roanoke River, from William EATON, by deed dated March 16, 1749/1750, and recorded in the August term of court, 1750 (Northhampton Deed Book 1, p. 443). Later sold this on Edward ROBERTSON on October 24, 1753 with deed recorded November Term, 1753. (Northhampton Deed Book 2, p 130).

Sold 100 acres of his inheritance from his father to his brother Young by deed (witnessed by his cousin James Macklemore, Jr.) dated May 7, 1753 and recorded the May Term, 1753 (Northampton Deed Book 2, p 115).

Sold, along with his brother Young, 100 additional acres to Edward ROBERTSON of Brunswick County, Virginia, who had previously bought land from Atkins.

Bought 610 acres of land on the east side of Lee's Branch in Granville County, North Carolina in 1754. Also joined the Granville County Militia, commanded by Col William EATON (from whom he had bought land) and served in the company commanded by Capt. Sugar JONES. Atkins served as executor of Sugar JONES estate in 1761, and in 1765 he married Sarah JONES, his captain's daughter.

Bought 685 acres in Granville adjoining Linches Creek, Joseph BRANTLEY and Samuel WILLIAMS.

In 1769, BUTE COUNTY cut from Granville, and at least some of Atkins holdings fell within Bute, as he was listed as a gentleman and planter when he signed the Bute County Oath of Allegience on July 8, 1775. In 1779, WARREN County was split off from Bute and Atkin's is found there, acquiring another 18 1/2 acres on Lee's Branch.

He died in Warren County in May, 1791, and his will, dated 15 September 1788, named his wife Sarah as executrix and left bequests to children Martha, Abigail, Young, Abraham, Robert, Atkins Jr, Sarah Jane and Priscilla. He devised land on Lynch's Creek in Warren and Franklin Counties, North Carolina. Also named were his brother, Young, and his son-in-law Nathaniel CHRISTMAS (Abigail's husband), and William CHRISTMAS. (James L. McLemore, III, pp 44, 45).

The History of Carroll County, Tennessee, p. 257 notes that "in 4-1776 Atkins was appointed by the Provincial Congress of NC to "receive, procure and purchase fire arms for the use of troops" in preparation for the Revolutionary War. He served in the NC State House of Commons 1778-1779, and was one of six commissioners appointed in 1779 by the NC General Assembly "to lay off and establish a town in Warren Co., NC for the setting the Court House of said County."

Robert McLemore Butler provided this extract from "North Carolina Revolutionary Soldiers, Sailors, and Patriots & Descendants" Vol II

Akins McLemore, Sr. (R-PAT-NC) c 1735 - W/P 1791 (will probated) M. Sarah ? (very possible last name was Young) Children: Abraham, Young, Robert, Akins, Sarah

Martha Hunt, in October 2914, shared the following additional details about the family of Atkins and Sarah McLemore:

The family came from Granville, Warren and Franklin Counties in N.C. They moved to Tennessee in the early 1800's after Tennessee was cut off from N.C. and became a state. Atkins McLemore, Sr. had a large blacksmith's shop in Franklin County, NC, a foundry, where he was paid to make guns and ammunition during the Revolutionary War. He died in Warren County, NC around 1792. His will distributes slaves to his children.

Some of Atkin McLemore's children, especially my 4th great grandfather - Abraham McLemore, moved their households to Tennessee. Following is a list from the will of Atkins McLemore.

Daughter, Martha Nicholson received 2 Negroes - Linda, Joe.
Daughter Abigail Christmas received 2 Negroes - Ollie and Plum. (In 1789 Abigail was married to William Christmas. Later on she married his brother).

  2. 3.  Young McLemore Descendancy chart to this point (1.Abraham1) was born about 1726 in Virginia; died before 9 Apr 1804 in Williamson County, Tennessee.

    Notes:

Young followed his brother Atkins westward. After buying 100 acres from Atkins in 1753, then selling 100 acres to Edward Robertson with Atkins in 1755, Young also began operations in Granville County, buying 275 acres there on both sides of Shocco Creek by deed witnessed by his brother.

Sept. 18, 1759 - Littlebury Swinney also White, aged 9 yrs May 15, 1759, bound to Young McLemore "to learn the business of a Planter and to have a years Schooling", said McLemore "at the time of his freedom" agrees to give him "a young Horse Bridle & Saddle & decert suit of Cloaths." (Source: Bastardy Bonds from Granville County, N.C., 1749-1780, as transcribed at:
    http://www.rootsweb.com/~ncgranvi/other/bas-bond.htm)

Young remained for a time, however, in Northampton County, serving in 1760 in that county's militia as a private in the cavalry troop of Capt. Henry Dawson. He was granted, also in 1760, 640 acres on both sides of Flat Creek in Granville County, and from then on made his home there. He picked up an additional 543 acres at the head of Shocco Creek, near his earlier tract, in February 1762.

Within three months, in May 1762, Young sold 200 acres on the north side of Shocco Creek, adjoining Ward and Macon. He was joined in this deed by his wife, Lucy. Thereafter, his lands seem to share a jurisdictional history similiar to Atkins', being found first in Granville County (where Young witnessed two deeds in 1763), then in Bute County (where he also witnessed a deed in 1766), then in Warren County (where he picked up four extra acres on the South Side of Sandy Creek in 1779), and finally in Franklin County where both he and his son Young Jr. were heads of household in the first U.S. Census of 1790.

On the last day of 1803, Young McLemore signed his will, and it was probated in Williamson County in April 1804. His principal legatees were his daughter Sukey GRAY and her children, though he mentioned another granddaughter as well. He is also known to have had at least two sons, Young Jr. and Nathaniel. His wife, Lucy died shortly before he did in 1803.

(James L. McLemore, III. pp 45-46).

  3. 4.  William Macklemore Descendancy chart to this point (1.Abraham1) was born about 1728 in Virginia; died before Feb 1736 in Bertie County, North Carolina.

    Notes:

Probably did not survive more than a year after the probate of his father's will, however, as William was not mentioned in the deed, dated February 8, 1736/7, from Mary Macklemore, Abraham's widow, to her other two sons Atkins and Young. (James L. Macklemore, III, p 43).

Generation: 3

  1. 5.  Martha McLemore Descendancy chart to this point (2.Atkins2, 1.Abraham1) was born between 1751 and 1766 in Granville County, North Carolina; died between 1805 and 1821 in Franklin County, North Carolina.

    Notes:

Mark Freeman has her DOB as after 1751 in Bute Co., N.C. She and John Nicholson were the parents of 11 children.

Lynda Huckaby Bishop emailed, in January 2009, that:

"I noticed your McLemore ancestry online. My grandmother (I don't know how many greats) was Frances Nicholson Williams. I believe she was the daughter of Atkins Nicholson, grandson of Atkins McLemore (?) and Betsy Knott. The only proof of that connection I can find is in the Maury County history book in TN. So much of that was incorrect. I was wondering if you have any Nicholson genealogy you would share.

    Notes:

Mark Freeman has her date of birth as ca 1760 in Bute Co., NC. Betty Pritchett writes that she is sometimes shown as Abygal Sugars McLemore.

Abigail married William Christmas on 28 Aug 1780 in Warren County, North Carolina. William (son of John Christmas, Sr. and Mary Graves) was born about 1760 in Orange County, North Carolina; died on 16 Dec 1811 in Jefferson, Williamson County, Tennessee. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

    Notes:

Listed by Mark Freeman, but not James L. McLemore. She is also omitted from the HISTORY OF CARROLL COUNTY, TENNESSEE, p. 257, in the transcription of her fathers will. Appears to have died prior to the death of her father?

Betty Pritchett instead shows her DOB as 1761.

Family/Spouse: Nathaniel Christmas. Nathaniel (son of John Christmas, Sr. and Mary Graves) was born about 1754 in North Carolina; died about 1820 in Mississippi. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  4. 8.  Nathaniel McLemore Descendancy chart to this point (2.Atkins2, 1.Abraham1) was born about 1762 in Granville County, North Carolina; died on 4 Jan 1824 in Davidson County, Tennessee.

    Notes:

Not mentioned in the transcription of his father's will. However, he was listed as the oldest son of Atkins on Mark Freeman's webpage. He was a member of the Milita in Bute County.

He served as a bondsman at the Orange County, North Carolina weddings of John SARKSTON to Margaret ARMSTRONG (21 March 1800) and William SMITH to Tabitha CATE (15 December 1800).

Williamson County, Tennessee County Court Minutes, May 1806-April 1812, by Carol Wells, Heritage Books, Inc., p. 176: [Book1, p. 577] "Monday 13th January 1812. Order Nicholas Perkins Senr Daniel Perkins Edward Warren & Robert McLemore any three settle with Hendley Stone gdn of Peter Pryor & Green Pryor orphans of John Pryor decd & report thereof to our ensuing County Court." [Book 1, p. 608] "Tuesday 14th April 1812.Settlement with Hendley Stone guardian of Peter & Green Pryor orphans of John Pryor decd returned."

Jane A. "Xan" Alexander emailed, in November 2011, that Robert McLemore wrote his will 14 Apr 1822. In his will and the probate file in Williamson County, Tennessee, we find: "beloved wife Peggy and our four children John Dabney McLemore, Polly Minor McLemore, Robert Weakly McLemore, and Peggy Smith McLemore"; "son Atkins J McLemore", "my daughter Bethenia Anne Greene McLemore" In the will he also says "I desire that my worthy friend Daniel Perkins should be guardian to my daughter Bethenia (who is also his granddaughter)". Thus we see that Atkins Jefferson McLemore and Bethenia Anne Greene McLemore were not children of Robert McLemore's last wife Peggy. Jane added that the current wife at the time of his death was Margaret "Peggy" S Dabney, daughter of John Dabney and Peggy Smith and sister to Bethenia Dabney who later married Atkins Jefferson McLemore.

The members of R1b are believed to be the descendants of the first modern humans who entered Europe about 35,000-40,000 years ago. Those R1b forebearers were the people who painted the beautiful art in the caves in Spain and France. They were the contemporaries (and perhaps exterminators) of the European Neanderthals. R1b is the most common Y haplogroup in Europe - more than half of men of European descent belong to R1b. Fourteen of the 30 most common haplotypes in the YSTR.org database are typical of R1b.

William Christmas's double-nephew, John Christmas McLemore became a clerk in his office in 1806 at the age of sixteen. On the death of his Uncle (1811?), McLemore succeeded to his office which he held for many years. It was said McLemore had more Tennessee land "on the books" than any individual person at any time.

In the course of his wheeling and dealing, many towns were named by him, including a town on the north side of the South fork of Obion river, at or near the place called "McLemore's Bluff," on the land of John C. McLemore, and the said town to be known by the name of Christmasville.

One can readily see that the town was named by him in honor of his family, as was the nearby West Tennessee town of McLemoresville.

File: McLemore, John C. .. Andrew Jackson Papers.1770-1803.docRMB

West Tennessee land speculator John C. McLemore was born January 1, 1790, in Orange County, North Carolina. In 1809 he moved to Nashville, where he became a surveyor's clerk. Five years later, he succeeded his uncle William Christmas as surveyor general of the Tennessee Military Tract. His name appeared in most county land books as a grant or land locator or as an official. Because of his character, generosity, and business acumen, contemporaries considered McLemore a potential gubernatorial or senatorial candidate, but he never ran for either office. Both Nashville and Memphis named an early street in his honor, an indication of his community status.
In addition to his popularity and impressive good looks, McLemore's rise to prominence benefited from his marriage to Elizabeth Donelson, daughter of John Donelson, a longtime friend of Andrew Jackson. Before 1820 Jackson and McLemore cooperated in land development in northern Alabama with fellow brother-in-law and Jackson favorite General John Coffee.

McLemore invested heavily in West Tennessee's development. Evidently he lent his name to McLemoresville and Christmasville in Carroll County. More importantly, the Jackson-McLemore tie resulted in the latter's early interest in Memphis and made him the fourth founding father of the city, along with Jackson, John Overton, and James Winchester. In competition with Overton and Winchester, McLemore speculated in risky ventures, namely Fort Pickering and the LaGrange and Memphis Railroad. Nearly bankrupt, he tried to recoup his losses in California's gold boom of 1850. Within a decade, McLemore returned to Memphis, where he died May 20, 1864.

The following bio by Mary and Kent, was copied from his FindAGrave memorial page, created by Marjorie Gurley:

Land Surveyor and Speculator. Though not as well known as his counterparts, McLemore was one of the original founders of Memphis playing a large if not larger role than John Overton, Andrew Jackson and James Winchester. At the age of 16 he moved to Nashville and began clerking as a land surveyor. Five years later he was appointed surveyor general of the military district by the Tennessee state legislature, a job formerly held by his uncle, William Christmas. In 1815 McLemore married Elizabeth Donelson, a niece of Andrew Jackson. Jackson and McLemore partnered together and enjoyed great success in land deals in Alabama and Tennessee. The two owned quite a bit of land in Memphis and when Jackson ran for president he traded his 625 Memphis acres to McLemore in exchange for land in Madison County making McLemore one of the largest land holders in Memphis. In addition he had land holdings throughout the state, mostly in West Tennessee, and at least two towns were named for him, McLemoresville and Christmasville. McLemore moved to Memphis in order to promote the town, sell lots and make money. He placed his name on the 1828 deed giving public access to the Memphis river front including Court Square, Market Square, Auction Square and the riverfront promenade. Through his land deals McLemore became extremely wealthy but his gamble on the failed Memphis and LaGrange railroad cost him most of his wealth. The project was an abject failure and a financial panic in 1837 decimated his holdings further. In an attempt to make a financial comeback McLemore went to California in the 1849 gold rush. He stayed there for about 12 years returning to Memphis before his death. Of all four founders of the City of Memphis, John Christmas McLemore is the only one buried in Memphis.

John married Elizabeth Donelson on 6 Apr 1815 in Tennessee. Elizabeth was born on 22 Nov 1796 in Davidson County, Tennessee; died on 2 Jul 1836 in LaGrange, Fayette County, Tennessee; was buried in Nashville City Cemetery, Nashville, Davidson County, Tennessee. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

Nicole Brooks is interested in any photos or information on the slaves of Sugars McLemore. She is asking because her third great grandmother was one of them and with whom he fathered several children who are her direct ancestors. Her ancestors name was Amanda, and Sugars purchased her sometime around the mid to late 1840s in Memphis and took her to Brownsville. She remained in his household until around 1856 when she was then gifted to his daughter Nancy (Nannie) Dabney McLemore after she married Thomas Cole. Mark Freeman shows that Robert was born ca 1801 and died ca 1821.

There is, however, a "Robert McLemore" who was born ca 1810 in Tennesse, and who can be found in Carroll County, Mississippi at the time of the 1870 census. He is living in the same proximity of John Dabney McLemore, the younger half-brother to this Robert McLemore. Therefore, it is POSSIBLE that they are one in the same.

    Notes:

A 36 year old John D. McLemore, born in Tennessee, is located in the Southern Division of Carroll County, Mississippi at the time of the 1850 census. John appears to be living with his wife, Sarah, and four children: Daniel, Price, Jefferson and Adalaide. As several researchers show John Dabney McLemore as the father of Price Perkins McLemore (although the evidenced for this is not documented in their trees), it appears likely that this John D. McLemore is indeed John Dabney McLemore. Rev. William McLemore shows that he was actually born in North Carolina, and does not list a location of death. Several online trees show he died in Panola County, Mississippi, but no sources are cited for this.

It is further shown on the 1850 census that John is married to a 24 year old Sarah, born in North Carolina. She would have been too young to be the mother of the three boys in the household, but is likely the mother of John's one year old daughter, Adalaide.
He reported that he owned property worth $2,000.

In 1860, the same John D. McLemore appears to still be listed in Carroll County, but without a wife or children enumerated with him. His real property was reported to be worth $381,000 and personal property was reported at $400,000. This is a huge increase in value in a relatively short time period. He is shown as a Farmer/Merchant. It appears that the "personal property" was likely his inventory of slaves.

This appears likely based on the following:

FORMAT. This transcription lists the names of those largest slaveholders in the County, the number of slaves they held in the Police District where counted, the number of the Police District and the first census page on which they were listed. The page numbers used are the rubber stamped numbers in the upper right corner of every set of two pages, with the previous stamped number and a "B" being used to designate the pages without a stamped number. Following the holder list is a separate list of the surnames of the holders with information on numbers of African Americans on the 1870 census who were enumerated with the same surname. The term "County" is used to describe the main subdivisions of the State by which the census was enumerated.

SOURCES. The 1860 U.S. Census Slave Schedules for Carroll County, Mississippi (NARA microfilm series M653, Roll 596) reportedly includes a total of 13,808 slaves. This transcription includes 75 slaveholders who held 40 or more slaves in Carroll County, accounting for 5,073 slaves, or 36% of the County total. The rest of the slaves in the County were held by a total of 888 slaveholders, and those slaveholders have not been included here. Due to variable film quality, handwriting interpretation questions and inconsistent counting and page numbering methods used by the census enumerators, interested researchers should view the source film personally to verify or modify the information in this transcription for their own purposes. Census data for 1860 was obtained from the Historical United States Census Data Browser, which is a very detailed, searchable and highly recommended database that can found at . Census data on African Americans in the 1870 census was obtained using Heritage Quest's CD "African-Americans in the 1870 U.S. Federal Census", available through Heritage Quest at

After the Civil War, in 1865, he filed for a petition of pardon and amnesty from the federal government.

"To his Excellency Andrew Johnson, President of the United States of America. Comes petitioner respectfully represents that he is now and had been for many years resident of the State of Mississippi; that he has a wife and eight children, and is fifty two years of age [therefore born ca 1813]. That at the commencement of the War he was invested as a partner in a commission house in New Orleans and a a planter in said State of Mississippi & Yazoo and Tallahatchie bottoms, that he was then and is now as a member of the land commission house and as an individual largely indebted, Say altogehter about the amoutn of three hundred thousand dollars, an undertimable amount which is due to orphan children, that he has lost all of his slaves, and second, all of the debt due to him, and said commission house, are now nearly worthless, that the property he now owns is worth more than twenty thousand dollars but that is is wholy insufficient to pay his debts. He is advised that by reason of the value of his property he is not entitled to the benefit of your Excellency's proclamation of Amnesty, dated 29 May A. D. 1865, and that he must apply for an official pardon. He also states that he comes under none of the ??? except form the benefits of ??? proclamation Except the one in relation to persons owning $20,00 in taxable property. He states that he was opposed to the secession of the Southern States and opposed it until it was done. After the war commenced he consciously believed it to be duty to assist his state and section, which he did tot he best of his ability. He was elected a member of the Legislature of the State of Mississippi in Oct 1863 and held that office when the war ended. This was all the office of position he ever held during said war. He was not in the army, being exempt from his age. He now states that he desires the benefit of said Proclamation and amnesty. That he has takend the oath ??? prescribed which he hopes to ????, which he declares he will conciously observe. He also states that no proceedings have been commenced to condemn or subject any of his property under the confiscation laws of th U.S. he now asks that he be allowed a full & free pardon." John D. McLemore.

At the time of the 1870 census, a John D. McLemore is once again listed in Carroll County, with a 44 year old wife "Sally" born in North Carolina. This appears to be the same Sarah he was listed with 20 years earlier. Several younger children are listed in the household with them as well. Perhaps his wife and children were living apart from him in 1860, or maybe they were just inadvertantly left off of the census by the enumerator.

    General Petition Information
Abstract:Eighteen-year-old Polly McLemore Perkins and her husband, William O. Perkins, seek a partition of the slaves remaining in the estate of her late father, Robert McLemore. They inform the court that McLemore's will directed that his slaves be divided among his widow and his children, three of whom are still minors. The Perkinses cite that the slaves were "to be divided when your petitioner Polly M should arrive at the age of eighteen years and should marry." They also note that the widow's "interest in all of said slaves" has been set aside and that Polly is of age and married. Of the belief that they "are entitled under said will to five seventeenths of the value of said slaves," the petitioners pray the court to "order a division of said slaves ... to be made & appoint commissioners to divide the same & set apart to your petitioners five seventeenths of the value thereof."

A scan of letter written by John R. Kemp, of Clinton KY, in memory of Robert Weakley McLemore is posted on his FindAGrave memorial page. This was said to have been published on December 10. 1897 in the Columbia Herald. Excerpts of this letter are transcribed below:

"......Robert W. McLemore, the loving husband, indulgent father, true christian, chivalric southern gentleman, and best of friends, after a long and useful life "has passed over the river and is now resting under the shade of the trees." As one who knew and loved him well, I would that I had the power to express the feelings of heart.....And as I think of his dear wife and children, and what he was to them, I feel that I could have died for him. I think of the dear, grand old home at "Everbright" and what a home it was-father, mother, sisters and brothers, not a link broken with no cares updon them their their suffering Southland, the scene of war and carnage. The home of wounded Confederate soldiers, and where the writer almost unto death was nursed back to life by this dear family. "A Confederate Soldier" was the password with threw open wide his doors and brought lvoing hears and unwearied attention......Farewell to thee, much loved and truest of friends. May the sod of beautiful Rose Hill rest above the nobel form, and at last may there be a happy reunion of all you loved here in the paridise of God."
