Williamson County, Tennessee County Court Minutes, May 1806-April 1812, by Carol Wells, Heritage Books, Inc., p. 176: [Book1, p. 577] "Monday 13th January 1812. Order Nicholas Perkins Senr Daniel Perkins Edward Warren & Robert McLemore any three settle with Hendley Stone gdn of Peter Pryor & Green Pryor orphans of John Pryor decd & report thereof to our ensuing County Court." [Book 1, p. 608] "Tuesday 14th April 1812.Settlement with Hendley Stone guardian of Peter & Green Pryor orphans of John Pryor decd returned."

Jane A. "Xan" Alexander emailed, in November 2011, that Robert McLemore wrote his will 14 Apr 1822. In his will and the probate file in Williamson County, Tennessee, we find: "beloved wife Peggy and our four children John Dabney McLemore, Polly Minor McLemore, Robert Weakly McLemore, and Peggy Smith McLemore"; "son Atkins J McLemore", "my daughter Bethenia Anne Greene McLemore" In the will he also says "I desire that my worthy friend Daniel Perkins should be guardian to my daughter Bethenia (who is also his granddaughter)". Thus we see that Atkins Jefferson McLemore and Bethenia Anne Greene McLemore were not children of Robert McLemore's last wife Peggy. Jane added that the current wife at the time of his death was Margaret "Peggy" S Dabney, daughter of John Dabney and Peggy Smith and sister to Bethenia Dabney who later married Atkins Jefferson McLemore.

    (Medical):DNA R1b1

The members of R1b are believed to be the descendants of the first modern humans who entered Europe about 35,000-40,000 years ago. Those R1b forebearers were the people who painted the beautiful art in the caves in Spain and France. They were the contemporaries (and perhaps exterminators) of the European Neanderthals. R1b is the most common Y haplogroup in Europe - more than half of men of European descent belong to R1b. Fourteen of the 30 most common haplotypes in the YSTR.org database are typical of R1b.

  1. 2.  Robert McLemore Descendancy chart to this point (1.Robert1) was born about 1801 in Franklin County, North Carolina; died on 27 Jul 1821 in Williamson County, Tennessee.

    Notes:

Mark Freeman shows that Robert was born ca 1801 and died ca 1821.

There is, however, a "Robert McLemore" who was born ca 1810 in Tennesse, and who can be found in Carroll County, Mississippi at the time of the 1870 census. He is living in the same proximity of John Dabney McLemore, the younger half-brother to this Robert McLemore. Therefore, it is POSSIBLE that they are one in the same.

    Notes:

A 36 year old John D. McLemore, born in Tennessee, is located in the Southern Division of Carroll County, Mississippi at the time of the 1850 census. John appears to be living with his wife, Sarah, and four children: Daniel, Price, Jefferson and Adalaide. As several researchers show John Dabney McLemore as the father of Price Perkins McLemore (although the evidenced for this is not documented in their trees), it appears likely that this John D. McLemore is indeed John Dabney McLemore. Rev. William McLemore shows that he was actually born in North Carolina, and does not list a location of death. Several online trees show he died in Panola County, Mississippi, but no sources are cited for this.

It is further shown on the 1850 census that John is married to a 24 year old Sarah, born in North Carolina. She would have been too young to be the mother of the three boys in the household, but is likely the mother of John's one year old daughter, Adalaide.
He reported that he owned property worth $2,000.

In 1860, the same John D. McLemore appears to still be listed in Carroll County, but without a wife or children enumerated with him. His real property was reported to be worth $381,000 and personal property was reported at $400,000. This is a huge increase in value in a relatively short time period. He is shown as a Farmer/Merchant. It appears that the "personal property" was likely his inventory of slaves.

This appears likely based on the following:

    CARROLL COUNTY, MISSISSIPPI
LARGEST SLAVEHOLDERS FROM 1860 SLAVE CENSUS SCHEDULES
    and
SURNAME MATCHES FOR AFRICAN AMERICANS ON 1870 CENSUS

    MCLEMORE, Jno. D., 79 slaves, Dist. 3, page 280
    MCLEMORE, John D., by W. D. Warren overseer, 68 slaves, Dist. 2, page 259

FORMAT. This transcription lists the names of those largest slaveholders in the County, the number of slaves they held in the Police District where counted, the number of the Police District and the first census page on which they were listed. The page numbers used are the rubber stamped numbers in the upper right corner of every set of two pages, with the previous stamped number and a "B" being used to designate the pages without a stamped number. Following the holder list is a separate list of the surnames of the holders with information on numbers of African Americans on the 1870 census who were enumerated with the same surname. The term "County" is used to describe the main subdivisions of the State by which the census was enumerated.

SOURCES. The 1860 U.S. Census Slave Schedules for Carroll County, Mississippi (NARA microfilm series M653, Roll 596) reportedly includes a total of 13,808 slaves. This transcription includes 75 slaveholders who held 40 or more slaves in Carroll County, accounting for 5,073 slaves, or 36% of the County total. The rest of the slaves in the County were held by a total of 888 slaveholders, and those slaveholders have not been included here. Due to variable film quality, handwriting interpretation questions and inconsistent counting and page numbering methods used by the census enumerators, interested researchers should view the source film personally to verify or modify the information in this transcription for their own purposes. Census data for 1860 was obtained from the Historical United States Census Data Browser, which is a very detailed, searchable and highly recommended database that can found at . Census data on African Americans in the 1870 census was obtained using Heritage Quest's CD "African-Americans in the 1870 U.S. Federal Census", available through Heritage Quest at

After the Civil War, in 1865, he filed for a petition of pardon and amnesty from the federal government.

"To his Excellency Andrew Johnson, President of the United States of America. Comes petitioner respectfully represents that he is now and had been for many years resident of the State of Mississippi; that he has a wife and eight children, and is fifty two years of age [therefore born ca 1813]. That at the commencement of the War he was invested as a partner in a commission house in New Orleans and a a planter in said State of Mississippi & Yazoo and Tallahatchie bottoms, that he was then and is now as a member of the land commission house and as an individual largely indebted, Say altogehter about the amoutn of three hundred thousand dollars, an undertimable amount which is due to orphan children, that he has lost all of his slaves, and second, all of the debt due to him, and said commission house, are now nearly worthless, that the property he now owns is worth more than twenty thousand dollars but that is is wholy insufficient to pay his debts. He is advised that by reason of the value of his property he is not entitled to the benefit of your Excellency's proclamation of Amnesty, dated 29 May A. D. 1865, and that he must apply for an official pardon. He also states that he comes under none of the ??? except form the benefits of ??? proclamation Except the one in relation to persons owning $20,00 in taxable property. He states that he was opposed to the secession of the Southern States and opposed it until it was done. After the war commenced he consciously believed it to be duty to assist his state and section, which he did tot he best of his ability. He was elected a member of the Legislature of the State of Mississippi in Oct 1863 and held that office when the war ended. This was all the office of position he ever held during said war. He was not in the army, being exempt from his age. He now states that he desires the benefit of said Proclamation and amnesty. That he has takend the oath ??? prescribed which he hopes to ????, which he declares he will conciously observe. He also states that no proceedings have been commenced to condemn or subject any of his property under the confiscation laws of th U.S. he now asks that he be allowed a full & free pardon." John D. McLemore.

At the time of the 1870 census, a John D. McLemore is once again listed in Carroll County, with a 44 year old wife "Sally" born in North Carolina. This appears to be the same Sarah he was listed with 20 years earlier. Several younger children are listed in the household with them as well. Perhaps his wife and children were living apart from him in 1860, or maybe they were just inadvertantly left off of the census by the enumerator.

    General Petition Information
Abstract:Eighteen-year-old Polly McLemore Perkins and her husband, William O. Perkins, seek a partition of the slaves remaining in the estate of her late father, Robert McLemore. They inform the court that McLemore's will directed that his slaves be divided among his widow and his children, three of whom are still minors. The Perkinses cite that the slaves were "to be divided when your petitioner Polly M should arrive at the age of eighteen years and should marry." They also note that the widow's "interest in all of said slaves" has been set aside and that Polly is of age and married. Of the belief that they "are entitled under said will to five seventeenths of the value of said slaves," the petitioners pray the court to "order a division of said slaves ... to be made & appoint commissioners to divide the same & set apart to your petitioners five seventeenths of the value thereof."

A scan of letter written by John R. Kemp, of Clinton KY, in memory of Robert Weakley McLemore is posted on his FindAGrave memorial page. This was said to have been published on December 10. 1897 in the Columbia Herald. Excerpts of this letter are transcribed below:

"......Robert W. McLemore, the loving husband, indulgent father, true christian, chivalric southern gentleman, and best of friends, after a long and useful life "has passed over the river and is now resting under the shade of the trees." As one who knew and loved him well, I would that I had the power to express the feelings of heart.....And as I think of his dear wife and children, and what he was to them, I feel that I could have died for him. I think of the dear, grand old home at "Everbright" and what a home it was-father, mother, sisters and brothers, not a link broken with no cares updon them their their suffering Southland, the scene of war and carnage. The home of wounded Confederate soldiers, and where the writer almost unto death was nursed back to life by this dear family. "A Confederate Soldier" was the password with threw open wide his doors and brought lvoing hears and unwearied attention......Farewell to thee, much loved and truest of friends. May the sod of beautiful Rose Hill rest above the nobel form, and at last may there be a happy reunion of all you loved here in the paridise of God."

  1. 9.  Robert Anderson "Andrew" Jefferson McLemore Descendancy chart to this point (3.Atkins2, 1.Robert1) was born on 28 Jul 1823 in Tennessee; died on 2 May 1891 in Columbia, Maury County, Tennessee.

    Notes:

MaryLynn Santa lists him with a much earlier date of death, June 1849. However, he appears to have still been living with his mother, listed as Andrew?, at the time of the 1850 US Census (Andrew McLemore, 27, M Farmer, Tennessee)

    Betty Pritchett notes that:

ccording to 1860 census records, Robert Anderson McLemore had real estate valued at $20,000 and a personal wealth of $14,000. By 1870, His real estate was valued at $8,000 and his personal wealth was $800.

If a person's wealth was $25,000 in 1860, it would equal $1.9 million in 2008 currency. As a general rule to convert antebellum money into 2008 currency, multiply by 75. (This multiplier was derived at by comparing a skilled laborer's wages of roughly $500 in the 1840s to an average family income in 2008 of around $37,500.) In 1850, a single field hand was worth $1100 to $1800. This amount converts roughly to $75,000 to $135,000 in 2008 currency.

Copy of the will recorded in Maury County, Tennessee. I, R. A. McLemore, now a citizen of Maury Co. Tenn. Make will . . . . I request that my just debts be paid out of the first monies that come into the hands of my executors. I owe $130.00 to dau. Sallie R. McLemore, and $200 to dau. Dora Kesterton. I desire these to be paid. To by beloved wife Rebecca - the rents of my farm in Williamson County for the present year 1891. I request that my funeral expenses be first paid out of said rent money. To daus. Sallie R. McLemore, Dora Kesterton, wife of John T. Kesterton, Narcissus Cornelius, wife of George Cornelius, the sum of $50 each and to my son Jeff McLemore $5. All the residue of property to my son Claiborne Kinnard McLemore, which consists of my Williamson farm, which was purchased with the means of his mother, my second wife. Mar. 17, 1903

Claiborne Kinnard McLemore rec'd from his father's will an additional $346. He chose to pay the monies owed to his sisters himself rather than rely on the estate. He wanted to avoid the need to sell the properties he inherited.

I wrote this so my children and grandchildren would have a clue about their background. My father told many stories about his ancestors. He said that R.A. McLemore had a red beard and you could hear him calling hogs over a wide area. My grandfather became a professional gambler on the riverboats up and down the Mississippi. He married twice. When he made enough money gambling, he retired and married. Patti deGraffenreid who bore him one child. She died about a month after giving birth. I have the dates somewhere. After a while he married my grandmother Nellie Theresda Green. She had four children; only one lived to adulthood (my father).

The biography below is courtesy of Mark Freeman. It includes excerpts from a Biographical sketch in Goodspeed's Tennessee History, Williamson County, pages 996 and 997.

"At seventeen years of age he entered Transylvania University at Lexington, Ky., and in 1849 he entered Lebanon Law School, where he graduated in 1851. In the same year he began to practice in Franklin, and in 1856 was elected county court clerk, and held this office until 1860, when he declined re-election and resumed the practice of law. In 1861 he enlisted in Company F, Fourth Tennessee Cavalry . . . " Transylvania University records show William S. McLemore in the 1847-1848 academic index as a member of the Adelphi Society (a literary society). William S. McLemore, Esq. is listed as a candidate for Attorney General for the district composed of Williamson, Davidson, and Sumner counties.

Editor of the Western Weekly Review newspaper in Franklin in 1861. From the Williamson County Circuit Court Minute Books Vol. 15: Monday 15, July 1861 court met according to adjourment. Present the Hon. Nathaniel Baxter, Judge. The Attorney Gen. of this Judicial District being absent, the court appoints William S. McLemore, Attorney General pro tem who appears in court and accepts of said appointment and having taken an oath to support the Constitution of the Confederate States of America and the Constitution of Tennessee and the oath of an Attorney General entered on the duties of his appointment.

A detailed account of Company F is provided in "The Williamson County Cavalry" by Michael Cotten, 1994. According to Thenie's diary he had 3 horses shot from under him during the war. One was at Thompson Station when he was shot through the canteen. John Rucker has the canteen with the bullet entry and exit holes. William S. McLemore was elected 1st Lieutenant of the Williamson County Cavalry shortly after the formation of the unit at Carnton, near Franklin, on 28 Sep 1861. He eventually commanded the 4th Tennessee Cavalry, and ended the war in command of a brigade. The 4th Tennessee fought under Forrest, and in all the major engagements of the Army of Tennessee. W.S. was in temporary command of the regiment as a Captain during the capture of Streight's raiders in Apr - May of 1863, COL Starnes being absent due to illness. He assumed command of the regiment 1 Jul 1863 after COL Starnes was killed at Tullahoma. Col. W.S. McLemore commanded a brigade of cavalry in President Davis's escort when they were captured at Washington Georgia 9 May 1865. The regimental colors of the 4th Tennessee were cut into pieces and divided among the couriers and staff of Colonel McLemore. "Dibrell's Old Flag was not Surrendered" by C.L. Nolen published in the "Confederate Veteran". Goodspeed's (con't): In 1865 he returned home and immediately began the practice of law, which he continued until 1972 when he was elected criminal judge. In 1878 he was elected circuit judge of the Ninth Judicial Circuit.

The autobiography of Albert Sydney McLemore, USMC as well as Thenie's diary give accounts of the election and as W.S. as judge. W.S. McLemore's gavel and certificate as judge are in the Rucker law office on the square in Murfreesboro. In the settlement of a suit by G.A. Pope against John Dabney McLemore et al John Dabney McLemore is represented by the firm of McLemore, Bond, and Wallace. They request a fee of $300 for the suit. It was submitted 22 Apr 1869. Burke Bond is the step son of Barbara McLemore, W.S. McLemore's sister.

McLemore, a copy which Harriet Hough provided me: "I must tell you my favourite story about my grandfather: one day a Nashville girl came out to visit and he was delegated to drive her around and show her the countryside. He became fed up with her hoity-toity airs and citified questions and, when she pointed to some negro women hoeing cotton and asked what they were doing, he replied "oh, they're just hoers" - maybe the Scottish McLemores were lairds or thanes, but William Sugars was an earthy man!

The Whartons were intellectuals, which helps the family tree - and the Dabneys were aristocracy - but I don't know just where they fit in." The following biography is courtesy of Melba Gene McLemore, from a book titled "Mississippi" by Dunbar Rowland, pages 202 and 203:

    R. S. McLemore, M. D., who for a number of years past lived retired in the attractive little city of Greenwood, Leflore county, was long known as one of the able and successful physicians of his native State, while he was a representative of one of the honored pioneer families of Mississippi, which it was his to represent as a Confederate soldier during the Civil War. Dr. McLemore was born in Alabama Aug. 28, 1837, and is a son of Col. John and Elizabeth (Marr) McLemore, native respectively of Tennessee and Alabama and both of sterling Scottish ancestry. They passed the greater portion of their lives on Carroll county, Miss., where the father was an extensive planter and a citizen of wealth and influence. Dr. McLemore completed his more purely academic education in the University of North Carolina, at Chapel Hill, being there graduated as a member of the class of 1857, with a degree of Bachelor of Arts. At the outbreak of the Civil War he enlisted in Company A, First Mississippi cavalry, and did yeoman service in the Confederate cause during the entire course of the war, while from 1862 to 1865 inclusive, he was principally engaged in scouting duty. After the close of the war he entered the New Orleans medical college, being there graduated, with a degree of Doctor of Medicine, in 1872, while he later took special post-graduate work in the city of Atlanta. The doctor first came to Greenwood as early as 47 and since the war made his home in the delta district of the Yazoo river with the exceptin of a period of about three years. He began the practice of his profession in Minter City, Leflore county, and floowed the work of the active physician and surgeon until 1900, when he retired, giving his supervision to his various capitalistic interests until his death with occurred on Nov. 26, 1905, while he had a most attractive residence property in the city of Greenwood. At one time he owned more than 2,000 actres of land in this section, but sold all except a fine plantation of 300 acres. The doctor traveled extensively and passed considerable time in Texas where he met with distinctive success in various business operations to which he turned his attention. Dr. McLemore was ever a staunch supporter of the cause of the Democratic party, but never sought the honors of public office of any description. In 1858 was solemnized the marriage of Dr. McLemore to Miss Marian E. Gibson, daughter of Col. I. S. and Mary (Geren) Gibson, who came to Mississippi from North Carolina, the father having been a prosperous planter and merchant. Dr. and Mrs. McLemore became the parents of six children, of whom only two are living.

    SMITHSON, Sallie Reese McLemore

The Pulaski (TN) Citizen 24 Jun 1936

Mrs. W. B. Smithson, widow of William Burr Smithson, former prominent lawyer and State Senator, died at the Pulaski Hospital about 3 o'clock Friday morning of pneumonia, following an acute illness which began only a few hours before her death. Mrs. Smithson had been at the hospital for about three months recovering from a hip fracture received in a fall at her home, and was so much improved that she had expected to leave the hospital this week. So her unexpected death was a great shock to her relatives and friends.

Dr. G. A. Morgan conducted the funeral rites Sunday afternoon at her late home and burial was in Maplewood Cemetery beside her husband who died about nine years ago.
Mrs. Smithson formerly was Miss Sallie Reese McLemore, of Spring Hill, her mother having been Harriet Susan Figuers. She married Mr. Smithson on Nov. 21, 1882, and had been a resident of Pulaski since then. She was a member of one of Maury County's most aristocratic families, and "Everbright" her ancestral home at Spring Hill was the scene of many brilliant social events both before and after the Civil War.

Mrs. Smithson was a woman of superior qualities and possessed a generous nature, genial disposition and intelligence and practical sense of a high order, and was noted for her love of flowers, shrubs, trees, and pretty landscape effects and devoted much time and energy to their culture. Ane the beautiful home which she sometimes called "Everbright" is a testimonial of her work.

Left with the responsibility of managing the estate left by her husband she did so in a way which reflected credit on her efficiency and good judgment. She was a home-loving woman, and spent most of the time looking after her home and its requirements. She had long been a loyal member of the Methodist Church.

    Notes:

In "The Leatherneck" dated May 12, 1923, an article announced the formation of a new chapter of the "Marine Corps Veteran's Association" in Houston, Texas. The chapter was called the McLemore Detachment in honor of Col. Albert S. McLemore USMC. Col. McLemore served 28 years in the Marine Corps and the article said that during the World War he was in charge of recruiting and publicity and, in 1919, he assumed the duties of Asst. Adjutant and Inspector of the Dept. Of the Pacific. The article announced that the McLemore Detachment has the following officers: N.J. Curtis, George Schleeter, Walter E. Baust, Ira L. Hinton and states that "Marines and ex-Marines who are from Texas, or who have ex-buddies from that state may get full information by writing to Ira L. Hinton, Old Federal Building, Houston, Texas." These former Marines were the "plank-owners' of this Detachment. The Marine Corps Veteran's Association then became the Marine Corps League so our Detachment has roots back to the earliest days. Why it was decided to honor Col McLemore by naming the "chapter" after him has been lost to time. But here is a short biography of Col. A.S. McLemore.

Albert Sydney McLemore was a native of Murfreesboro, TN. Born in 1869, he was commissioned a Second Lieutenant in the Marine Corps on July 1, 1893. He served with the Marine Guard aboard U.S.S. New York in 1894 and aboard U.S.S. Philadelphia from 1895 to 1897. During the Spanish-American War he served with Co. E, First Marine (Huntington's) Battalion, North Atlantic Fleet from April 22, 1898 to September 20, 1898. He was present ashore at Guantanamo, Cuba in defense of Camp McCalla June 11, 12 and 13, 1898 for which he was later appointed Captain by Brevet on March 18, 1901 for "distinguished conduct and public service in the presence of the enemy at Guantanamo, Cuba". This was a particularly high honor in a time when there no decorations in the Naval service to award bravery for officers. The Medal of Honor was reserved for enlisted men only until after the Mexico Campaign in 1914. He had a long career in the Marine Corps serving on numerous ships and stations. By 1917 he had been promoted to Colonel and became Asst. Adjutant and Inspector in the Marine Corps. In 1918 he assumed the duties of Officer-in-Charge of the Marine Corps Recruiting Publicity Bureau in New York, N.Y. He was named to receive a Brevet Medal for his Distinguished Conduct in Cuba in 1898 but he died at Mare Island, CA from cancer on July 13, 1921.

  23. 68.  Robina McLemore Descendancy chart to this point (13.John3, 3.Atkins2, 1.Robert1) was born on 10 Feb 1872 in Williamson County, Tennessee; died on 3 Feb 1964 in Abilene, Taylor County, Texas.

    Notes:

There was a Robina McLamore who was born in Tennessee, and was a lodger at a home in Dallas at the time of the 1910 census. However, she was listed as born ca 1884, so this may not be the same person. Her occupation was that of Secretary and Treasurer at a Telegraph office. The same Robina McLemore, now listed as a private secretary at a Telegraph office, was still boarding in a home in Dallas in 1920. The 1920 census puts her year of birth as ca. 1880. She again was listed as born in Tennessee.

The Texas Death index has a record for a Robina McLemore, married, dying on February 3, 1964 in Taylor County, Texas.

The image of her actual Texas Death certificate can be viewed online at FamilySearch.org, Texas Deaths, 1890-1976. DR. JAMES MINOR ALEXANDER
DR. JAMES MINOR ALEXANDER, a leading physician of Abilene, was born in Maury county, Tennessee, September 18, 1867. His father, James Franklin Alexander, is represented elsewhere in this work. In his youth Dr. Alexander remained upon his father's farm and attended the common schools of the home locality, therein mastering the common branches of English learning. After putting aside his text-books he became connected with the drug trade and while thus engaged acquired a good knowledge of chemistry and prescription work. He was thus employed for two years in Hillsboro, Texas, and this led to his desire to become a member of the medical fraternity so that ultimately he matriculated in the Louisville Medical College, at Louisville, Kentucky, from which institution he was graduated in the class of 1889. He then returned to this state for the practice of medicine, opening an office in Victoria, whence he came to Abilene in November, 1889. Here he has since resided, ever seeking for the latest discoveries and modern theories of medicine and surgery. He has at different time pursued post graduate work in the Post Graduate Hospital of New York, and has thus kept in touch with the onward march of his profession. Since locating in Abilene Dr. Alexander has built up a large and lucrative practice and is regarded as an excellent physician and skillful surgeon, having comprehensive knowledge of the principles of medical science which he applies accurately and correctly to the needs of his patients. Recognizing the need of a suitable place where the sick of the western country could receive proper attention he erected in 1904 a sanitarium at the west end of North Fifth street, in Abilene. This is a spacious two-story structure, containing about seventeen rooms and is fitted up with all modern appliances and apparatus, including the X-ray and other electrical equipments. The building is well furnished, lighted throughout with electricity and heated by steam and in fact has every comfort and convenience for its patrons in harmony with the lines of health and sanitation. Dr. Alexander is a member of both the State and Taylor County Medical Associations and his fraternal relations connect him with the Elks, the Woodmen of the World and other societies.

On the 19th of November, 1896, Dr. Alexander wedded Miss Madge Quarles, a daughter of William Quarles, and a native of Charleston, Mississippi. They have one son, James Word Alexander.

ALEXANDER, JAMES MINOR (1867-1954). James Minor Alexander, builder and physician, was born on September 18, 1867, in Spring Hill, Tennessee, to James Franklin and Elizabeth (Minor) (sic) Alexander. He attended the Kentucky School of Medicine and graduated with honors in 1889 from Louisville Medical College. Later he did postgraduate work in New York, at Johns Hopkins in Baltimore, at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, and in 1913 in hospitals in London, Paris, Rome, Naples, and Berlin. In 1889 he moved to Victoria, Texas, then to Abilene, where he started a practice.

He opened Alexander Sanitarium, a hospital with eighteen beds, on June 1, 1904, in a two-story frame building. In 1918 he converted the structure into a school for nurses and moved his hospital into an adjacent three-story brick building with forty beds. He was joined in his Abilene practice by his brother, Dr. Sydney McLemore Alexander. Jim Alexander was credited with many medical firsts in West Texas, including the first Caesarean operation and the first two complete hysterectomies. He installed Abilene's first X-ray equipment. He closed his sanitarium in 1934 to join the staff of Hendrick Medical Center, where he later became chief of staff. He was a member of the Taylor-Jones County Medical Society, the Texas Medical Association, the Southern Medical Association, and the American Medical Association.

In 1925 he constructed the Alexander Building, then the tallest building in Abilene. That same year he established the Alexander Trust Estate, which placed most of his holdings in the names of his children. After his medical career was established, he acquired ranchland in Jones, Stonewall, King, Knox, and Shackelford counties. His ranching operations continued through his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was married twice, first to Madge Quarles, then to Anna Lee Burnes. He retired from medical practice in 1949 and died on November 10, 1954. He was buried in Cedar Hill Cemetery, Abilene.

Dr. James Minor (Jim) Alexander, pioneer Abilene area physician, willed all of his property---"in excess of $20,000"---to his grandchildren.

This was revealed Wednesday morning when the will was filed in the Taylor County clerk's office.

He died Nov. 10 in Abilene at the age of 87.

Dr. Alexander's son, Minor Alexander, was named as executor. The grandchildren are to share and share alike. The will was signed June 7, 1951, and was witnessed by L. S. Perry and E. T. Brooks.

Named as beneficiaries were the grandchildren, James Randall Alexander and Sydney McLemore Alexander, sons of Syndey McLemore Alexander; grandson Sydney Elmon Niblo, son of Lurline Elizabeth Niblo; grandchildren Martha Jane Alexander, James Minor Alexander, and Frances Marian Alexander, children of Minor Alexander.

An application to probate the will said Dr. Alexander possessed real and personal property of a probable value in excess of $20,000.

(Research):Betty Blane Sutton speculates he is the father of her ancestor, George Robert McLemore. She emailed, in February 2012, that George Robert Mclemore was born in 1882 in the South, sometime before 1920 he married Thula (Allie) Willis in OK. They had two children: my mother, Violet Modene Mclemore (April 8 1920 -May 20 1978) and Paul Levithan Mclemore (Sept 17 1924 - Apr 1974) both born in OK. After Thula (1892-1927) died he took the two chldren to Texas where they ended up in a children's home. George returned to OK. In 1946 George ended up in Western State Hospital for 11 years and is buried on there grounds. I have found him in the 1910 and 1920 census, but nothing else.
