  1. 1.  Robert Lott was born about 1775; died on 21 Mar 1843 in Columbia, Marion County, Mississippi.

    Notes:

    Per Mary Fisher, Robert Lott, husband of Sarah Tyner, was murdered the 21st March 1843, as reported in the Columbus Georgia Enquirer, 5th April 1843. The McArthurs that were members of the Copeland gang were related to him throught the Lotts. In the book on James Copeland he states the murder happened in March 1844, but this was recorded while he was waiting to be hung in 1857. They had also planned to kill another man.

    The affidavit of Richard Eugene Blackburn also refers to the murder. He stated that "Dorinda "Rendy" Lott's father was Robert Lott whose homeplace was situated on the local road a few hundred feet North of where the new Highway 98 bridge crosses Black Creek. This bridge is about halfway between Columbia and Hattiesburg, Mississippi. The old Robert Lott homeplace is only a few miles from where I reside and I have been to this old place many times. As I previously stated, Robert Lott was murdered by the Copeland Gang, robbed and his body thrown int the "Bob Lott" hole on Black Creek, a short distance from his home. His neighbors recovered his body and he was buried on a hill close by the road, just a few hundred feet North of his old home, which site can still be identified by the remains of the old dug well. . .The William McGrews and James Edmondsons lived near each other on Bouie river and were members of the Providence Baptist Church. I have been told that Robert Lott was a wealthy man for his day and that after his death, and during the settlement of his estate the brothers-in-law had an arguement over the division and that feelings ran high between them and finally the deacons of the church had to intercede and they suceeded in restoring the friendship between the two brother in laws and their families. I have been told there are several references to this on old records of the church."

    Wayne Page (pagewayne1@aol.com) emailed, on June 21, 2008, that Robert Lott was the son of John A. Lott and Sarah "Sallie" Lightfoot.

    Notes:

    Per "The Southern McGrews Grew", he was a Civil War veteran and was captured, but as it was near the end of the war, he was not held long. He lived in Covington Co, MS until the late 1870's, but had to leave after he and a group of men were involved in the murder of Luke Broom. When the law came to arrest him, he asked if he could first feed his oxen, and they consented. He escaped. His brother, Leonard, loaded the family up and took them to Louisiana and they hid out near Baton Rogue. They had 11 children, and he died on 19 December 1886, and was buried in Knox cemetery, The Plains, East Feliciana Parish, LA. His wife died of pneumonia at the home of her son, Robert, on 10 November, 1895 and was buried near Alexander.

    Wynema McGrew writes that he enlisted in the Confederate State Army on either 10 Feb 1862 at Williamsburg, Covington County, Mississippi or 1 Feb 1862 at Handsboro, Harrison County, Mississippi. He was a sergeant in Company B, Fourth Cavalry under Capt. Norman. He was paroled in Gainsville, Alabama on 12 May 1865.

    Wynema McGrew writes that she married second Dock Hall. In the 1870 Covington County, MS census, her Lott children were listed in the home of D. G. and Mary Ann Hall. On the 1880 census, the children were listed by the last name Hall, not Lott, with the family residing in Smith County, MS. In Smith County, in 1900, a Glenions Hall can be found, without wife Mary Ann or any of the children enumerated in 1900, but with seven younger Hall children, all born after 1880.

    Notes:

    Wynema McGrew notes that Leonard was not easy to get along with, and had been asked by neighbors to move. He was rumored to have killed men, outside of combat, during the Civil War. Bruce Aultman, an attorney living in the Victory community in Lamar County suggested that Leonard was a Jayhawk (Union sympathizer) during the Civil War. He did serve in the Confederate Army, however, enlisting in Capt. H R McLaurin's Company (Co F, 27th Regiment, Mississippi Infantry) on 26 Aug 1861, the same day R. L. McGrew enlisted. He was discharged in Rome, Georgia on 11 Apr 1863 due to wounds to his hip and knee while at Shelbyville, Tennessee. He later served in Company E, 3rd Battalion, Mississippi Reserve Calvary from which he was paroled on May 16, 1865. He was a freemason and baptist for most of his life, but converted to Catholicism late in life, due to his many transgressions and the influence of his eldest daughter, Susanna, who had converted when she married, and Leonard was buried in the Catholic portion of the Williamsburg Cemetery. The cemetery name, per Find A Grave, was the Saint James Catholic Cemetery in Bassfield, Mississippi.

    On the 1870 census, he was listed as Andrew and living with his parents in Mobile. He was a resident of Mobile, Alabama, living on Spring Hill Road between Broad and Pine in 1875, as per the 1875 City Directory. Maybe listed twice, as Andrew and Olander P? (Same address).

James McGrew was appointed sergeant on 27 Sep 1862; hospitalized in Shelbyville, Tennessee for several months, and later caputured on Lookout Mountain in Chattanooga, Tennessee. He was held as a prisoner of war in Rock Island, Illinois, and paroled on 8 Jun 1865 at Mobile, Alabama, his place of residence being shown as Perry County, Mississippi.

    Per "The Southern McGrews Grew", Leonard was shot by Levi Smith, who suspected that Leonard and his wife were having an affair. He shot him at church one Sunday. After his death, his wife Ester moved back to Ellisville, Jones County, Mississippi. Five of their sons joined the Seabees and roamed all over the country.

    On the 1910 census, Leonard and Ester were living in Covington County, with four sons, Carrol (b. ca 1903), Bradford (b. ca 1906), Lawrence (b. ca 1908), and Latson (age nine months).The same family group can be found in Covington in 1920, however Latson was instead listed as Curtis. Two daughters were in the home, Iva J. (born ca 1912) and Mamie (age five months). In 1930, the widowed Ester was in Ellisville, Mississippi, with only Curtis and Mamie still living at home.

    Notes:

    Mary Frances Fisher Smith has in her notes a copy of an affidavit by Richard Eugene Blackburn. She writes that deposition was signed on April 23, 1963, and witnessed by Paul V. Draughn and H. J. Love. She said that all efforts to locate the original deposition have been in vain. It is not known which of the families he mentioned were trying to verify information, or for what purpose the deposition was prepared.

    He stated that his father was Irvin Armstrong Blackburn, son of Ferdinand Boon Blackburn and Sarah Elizabeth Tyner, and that his mother was Amanda Jane McGrew was the daughter of William McGrew and Dorinda Lott. William McGrew was born in Covington Co, Mississippi about 1815. He was the son of John (Jack) McGrew.

    Later, he states that "Ferdinand's father was Gabriel Blackburn, a veteran of the War of 1812, who is buried on his old home place on Highway 13, near Columbia, Mississippi. This place is now owned by a Mr. Polk, an electrician."
