Wright McLemore, Of Arkansas

Notes:

Melba Gene McLemore noted that in both the April 7, 1824 and July 5, 1826 issue of THE VILLAGE MESSENGER, published in Fayetteville, Lincoln County, Tennessee, a Wright M'LEMORE was listed among those for whom dead letters were being held at the Fayetteville Post Office. This makes him very likely a brother of Joel and Sterling McLemore, whose families were in Fayetteville, Tennessee during this same time frame. Joel and Sterling were sons of Sterling and Rebecca McLemore of Fayette County, Kentucky, originally from North Carolina.

It is possible, however, that Wright was instead a son of Wright McLemore and Sarah Ransome of North Carolina.

Melba Gene McLemore has the following Oral Family History from Coy McLemore, born 1940 and living in Sheridan, Arkansas in July, 2005:

"His Daddy (Eluas McLemore) spoke often of his grandfather, Wright McLemore. He said that Wright and a brother came to Arkansas together. Granddaddy Wright stayed in Arkansas, and the other brother left for Lousiana..." (very likely this was Keton Jones McLemore, born ca 1809 in Kentucky and living in Sabine Parish, Louisiana at the time of the 1850 census). Coy didn't recall were the McLemore's lived prior to Arkansas, but reported that the family was Scoth/Irish.

Dolores McLemore McKee reports that all three of Wright's sons died as a result of the Civil War, and that his sons all left children to be raised by their mothers and family members.

A direct male descendant volunteered to have his DNA tested. The results can be found at www.ysearch.org, under the user ID #ag2C5. The FamilyTreeDNA kit number is 87115.

The descendant was a participant in the Morrison DNA study. His DNA was a high definition match to two other McLemore's (not previously proven to be related), as well as to a McElmurry from Kentucky. See the results for Group O at the following website:

The McLemore's that he matched were (1) a descendant of Keton Jones McLemore, born in Kentucky and living in Sabine Parish, Louisiana in 1850 (they were one step removed at 25 markers); and (2) a descendant of John McLemore, born 1822 in North Carolina and living in Decatur County, Georgia in 1850 (they were two steps removed at 25 markers).
The different markers, in each case, were rapidly mutuating.

According to Melba Gene McLemore, he filed a Federal Land Patent in Jefferson County in 1855.

Melba Gene McLemore also shows that he enlisted as a Private in Co. K, 18th Arkansas Infantry, at Pine Bluff, Arkansas on February 22, 1862. He died in Little Rock Arkansas just two months later, on April 22, 1862. It is possible that he died in a measles epidemic that took place in the Spring of that year.

Melba Gene McLemore shows that he enlisted in the confederate forces as a Private as part of the 26th Arkansas Infantry, Company C, at Pine Bluff, Arkansas on 12 May 1862. He died in a hospital in Little Rock Arkansas on July 18, 1862. His brother, Sterling Columbus, died in the same hospital just a few days later. His older brother, John, had also died in a hospital in Little Rock three months previously.

His middle name is listed by some as Columbus, but Coy McLemore instead shows his middle name as Cornelius. Melba Gene McLemore has located land transactions of Sterling McLemore's on record at the Little Rock land office dating to early 1860.

Died as a result of the Civil War, in a field hospital in Little Rock, Arkansas. He and his brother, Rufus, who both enlisted in the 26th Arkansas Infantry on the same day as Sterling, died in the same hospital just a few days apart. Their older brother, John, had died three months previously, also after being hospitalized in Little Rock.

Dolores McKee writes that Elisha was orphaned at a young age, his mother dying in childbirth and his father dying in the Civil War when Elisha was still a toddler. He was raised in the Star City area with the children of his Uncle Sterling, who had also died in the Civil War. Dolores McLemore McKee writes: "Elisha was raised by a black lady. The story is told of his returning to Arkansas in the late 1800's and a black lady standing on the porch waving her apron and shouting that her baby had come home. It is believed that this may have been a lady working for the Heflin family. One of Elisha's sisters had married into the Heflin family and it is reported that they had several slaves. Our aunts, Ida, Maybelle and Rosie, stepchildren of Elisha, were witness to this occasion.

Elisha had left Arkansas earlier. When he reached the age of 18 - 20, he packed his saddle bags and headed for Texas. Whether by chance or by plans he ended up in Rains County Texas. There he married 3 times. His first two wives died very soon after their marriages. The brides were Alice Lowery and Sarah Simpkins. One of these ladies had a son that they named Luther. Elisha turned him over to a Smith family and he was raised there in East Texas. By his 3rd wife, Susan Byrum,he fathered 8 more children, two of whom died as toddlers. He died in 1922 and is buried in Colony Cemetery in Alba, Tx. Susan died in Fresno, CA. in 1947 while visiting her children, all of whom had moved there in the mid 1930s. She is buried in Fresno. All of these brothers and sisters were facing very hard times in East Texas so they headed to the land of Plenty = California. They were able to improve their living conditions greatly. Only the two brothers left California for their native Texas. The rest of the(Elisha) McLemore bunch is scattered to the four corners of the world."

Melba Gene McLemore shows that she married William Jackson "Jack" SHUMAKE around 1878 in Lincoln County, Arkansas. However, if she is correct, Harriet and William may have divorced, or Harriet might have died shortly afterwords, as this couple can not be located on the 1880 census. However, a Jack SHUMAKE, married to a 31 year old Marthy, can be found. Marthy was born in Mississippi, and appears to have been previously married to a SACKET.

Melba Gene McLemore shows that he married three times, to Lola DERASAUL, Elizabeth BURKHAM Mason (his first cousin, daughter of his mother's sister Victoria Reynolds Mason), and Willie BAILEY.

Was Wright the father of Maggie McLemore, born in Jan 1891 in Arkansas? Maggie was living with her grandmother, Elvira McLemore Newman in Lincoln County, Arkansas at the time of the 1900 census.

Melba Gene indicates that sometime before, Wright had married to his third wife, Willie Bailey, and they were living in Owen, Lincoln County, Arkansas at the time of the 1900 census. Living with them was 6 year old James Harmon, born March 1894, a step son to Wright, born to Willie during her first marriage. They were also the parents of 10 month old Sterling McLemore.

In 1910, Willie Bailey Harmon McLemore was remarried to Eli BENNINGFILED. They were living in Niven Twp, Jefferson County, Arkansas with their blended family.

- Mrs. Emily Spann, 44, Summoned By Death
Mrs. Emily Spann, 44, died yesterday in her home at Route 9, Box 641, following a brief illness. She was a native of Texas and came to Fresno nine months ago. She is survived by a son, A, J. Ferris; a daughter, Miss Irene Farris: her mother, Mrs. Ann McLemore; two brothers, Robert McLemore and Angelo McLemore, and six sisters, Madames Mozelle Tippitt, Lillie Hill, Fallie Johnson, (illegible), (illegible) Smith and Mabelle Walker, all of Fresno. Last rites are scheduled for tomorrow at 10 A. M. in the Lisle Funeral Chapel with Rev. Olio Pauls officiating, to be followed by interment in the Belmont Memorial Park.

Dolores McLemore McKee writes that her parents, Angelo and Pauline McLemore moved to California in 1935 where he worked for various large land owners, mostly in the fruit industry He also spent several summers working in Oregon and Washington. There he worked on McNary Damn located on the Columbia River. This was the time that irrigation was being developed for all the farming on both sides of the Columbia River. He was baptized ca 1950 Kennewick First Christian Church. He joined his son in Dallas in 1954 in his plumbing company. He passed away on August 15, 1959 while fishing on the White River in Arkansas. He is buried in Dallas along side his wife, Pauline (his second wife).

Although the SSDI shows that Angelo was born 7 Jan 1903, Dolores notes that her own birth certificate indicates her father was born in 1902.
