    Cass City Michigan
    Friday, May 19, 1907

Mrs Christina Buerk nee Reinert died at the home of her son, Fred Buerk, on Thursday, May 11 after an illness of several months. She was born in Walthausen, Wurtenberg, Germany on January 4, 1817, where in 1835 she was united in marriage to John Buerk. To this union came five children, four sons and one daughter. Two sons, Charles of Caro and Fred of this place survive. Mr. Buerk died in Germany in 1866 and in 1873 Mrs. Buerk and her children came to America, settling on a farm in Elkland township, northeast of this village.

She was converted during a series of meetings conducted by Rev. W. Berge during his former ministry here and has since lived a christian life. At that time there was no Evangelical church organized in this village. For several years past she has made her home with her son, Fred. Besides her two remaining sons she leaves 5 granchildren and 15 great-granchildren. The funeral services were held in the Evangelical church Sunday afternoon, conducted by Rev. W. Berge, and her remains laid to rest in Elkland Cemetery.

    Notes:

Frederick Buerk was a carpenter and undertaker, making caskets of wood, in Waldhausen, Germany. He made the wooden trunks bound by iron straps to carry the families possesions during their journey to America. He bought land from John Striffler to establish a farm.

The Buerk's lost their possessions in the fire of 1881. Fred had just erected a new grainery and completed thrashing, leaving a large straw stack when the fire swept through in September. It ignited Fred's straw stack and burned the barns and house. The family survived by lying face down in a sugar cane patch, which kept them from suffocating from the smoke of the sorgum field, which was still green. They were forever grateful to Reverend Fred Klump, who carried a dish of water to wet his eyes as he walked through the woods until he found them still alive. Those families who were spared the tragedy of "burning out" formed a relief agency from which the Buerk's and others received hay, lumber, furniture and other supplies. Starting over again, the family picked blackberries in the woods which Catherine carried in a basket on her head to town and traded. The next summer the buildings were rebuilt and the family carried-on. The family rebuilt one half mile south of the original buildings on what is now the Lawrence Buehrly farm. (From Art Peck book, recounting the memories shared by Mrs. Elsie C. Anthes of Cass City, with additional information from an article about the Frederick Benkelman family from Volume 27 of the STRIFFLER-BENKELMAN BROADCAST, published September 4, 1967, as well as from BonnieMargaret Jacobs unpublished 1981 manuscript, p. 161).

While driving to Cass City Saturday afternoon the horse of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Buerk became frightened and ran into the ditch. Mr. Buerk was thrown from the buggy and dragged some distance in the water. Fortunately neither Mr. or Mrs. Buerk sustained any serious injuries and aside from a few broken eggs no damage was done.

Fred Buerk Laid to Rest Tuesday, March 30

He was converted to God in 1874 under the labors of Rev. Berge. He continued a faithful member of the Evangelical Church and held many important offices of the society. Besides his wife, he leaves one daughter, Mrs. Leonard Buehrly, six grandchildren and one great grandchild. Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon. Rev. J. A. Notes:

According to the Decree of District Court, Denver, Colorado, Dated September 2, 1931, showing the proportion of Mary Schwegler's Interest Distributable to Each, the only heir of Mrs. Mary Buerk was Archibald Gilchrist. In Art Peck's THE TEN BENKELMANS WHO EMIGRATED TO AMERICA CIRCA 1850s, it is noted that Archibald was raised by Fred and Mary Kolb. No further details are given. A 12 year old "Archie Buerk" was shown as a boarder in the home of Charles and Mary Buerk at the time of the 1900 census. Archie Gilchrist was also shown as the petitioner in regards to the probate of the Estate of Mary Buerk, deceased, in February 1929.

  3. 7.  Eva Catharina "Katie" Koepf Descendancy chart to this point (4.Christine2, 1.Christina1) was born on 25 Sep 1865 in W?rttemberg, Germany; died on 15 Jan 1938 in Cass City, Tuscola County, Michigan; was buried in Elkland Township Cemetery, Cass City, Tuscola County, Michigan.

    Notes:

She was said by Art Peck to be a half sister of Rudolph and Marie Kaiser. Her death certificate showed her as a daughter of Fred Buerk, with her mother's name not listed. The name Fred Buerk may have been in error, as she had an uncle Fred Buerk as well. It could well be that she listed her uncle as her father, as BonnieMargaret Jacobs wrote, on page 162 of her unpublished manuscript about the Benkelman family, that Kate/Katie was raised by Fred Buerk and Catherina Benkelman as if she were their own daughter, who was also named Catherine. To avoid confusion, Katherine Eva was called Kate or Katie, and her elder cousin (by just one month) was called Catherine.

Family Search instead shows her as a daughter Christine Buerk and Johannes Koepf, and he was listed as her father on the "Deutschland Geburten und Taufen, 1558-1898", database on FamilySearch.

    A Most Distressing Accident

Luella Striffler Instantly Killed Last Thursday

A most distressing accident occurred northeast of Cass City last Thursday afternoon which resulted in the instant death of six-year-old Luella Striffler, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Solomon Striffler.

The younger children who attended the Wright school northeast of town, had, as usual, been dismissed at recess time and Luella and her little cousin, Katie Striffler, had started for home. Mr. Andrews, a neighbor, was coming to town with a load of baled hay and the little girls took hold of the back of the wagon box and trudged along behind. Soon after Luella went around to the side of the wagom and placed her school book which she had been carrying, upon the rig between the bales of hay. It slipped to the ground and she leaned forward to pick it up and must have fallen, for the hind wheel of the heavily laden wagon passed over her little head completely crushing the upper portion. One of her limbs was also broken and her foot crushed. Death was instantaneous.

The man on the wagon had seen the little folks on the way home from school, but drove on unconscious of the awful accident which had happened, not hearing their voices on account of the rattle of the wagon passing over the hard ground. His first intimation that anything had gone wrong was when his attention was attracted by the cries of Katie who ran screaming to tell her mother what had happened.

The accident took place almost directly in front of the homes of Samuel and Solomon Striffler, and the parents of the little girl were among the first to know the horrifying facts. Tenderly the tiny form was carried into the home which she had left so shortly before, but the little spirit had taken its flight.

Anna Luella was the fifth child of Mr. and Mrs. Solomon Striffler, who reside one mile east and one and one-fourth miles north of town. She was six years old last October and an exceptionally sweet and intelligent little girl. She was born on the farm where her parent still reside and for almost a year she has attended the Wright school.

The funeral services took place on Sunday morning in the Evangelical church, Rev. W. Bergey officiating. He preached from the text recorded in Psalms 16:6---"The lines are fallen unto me in pleasant places; yea, I have a godly heritage," and spoke many words of comfort to the grief striken family. He was assisted by Rev. J.W. Fenn.

The pall bearers were four of the playmates of the little dead girl: Seva Withey, Ella Wallace, Hallie Spurgeon and Carrie Hurley.

The floral tributes were profuse and very beautiful, the casket being completely hidden from view by flowers. The remains were interred in Elkland cemetery.

Besides her parents, she leave three sisters, Alice, Alma and Edna; and three brothers, Frank, of Detroit, and Leonard and Louis.

The sympathy of the entire neighborhood and village goes out to the stricken family in their deep sorrow over the sudden loss of their loved one.
