    Joseph and Anna Volmut came to the United States in 1889 with their two youngest daughters, Antonie (19) and Barbara (16). They lived with their oldest daughter, Mrs. John (Mary) Holpuch, of Altanta Precinct in Saline County. Two of the Volmut daughters, Mary and Anna, had come to Saline County earlier where they were married. (Milligan, p. 574).

    John Holpuch died of pleurisy on January 7, 1902, at the age of 62 years. He was bured at Ceski Bratri Cemetery. Mary Holpuch was left with 5 children, the oldest being 15 years old and the youngest was only 4. She raised her children in Milligan. She moved to Lawrence, Nebraska to help raise the children of her daughter, Mrs. Frank Rischling, who died April 10, 1928. She continued to make her home with her son-in-law in Lawrence where she became very ill, passing away on March 30, 1936, at the age of 76 years. She was buried near her husband in Cescki Bratri Cemetery.

    John graduated from Milligan High School in 1913, after which he farmed with his father. He was drafted into the U.S. Military on May 28, 1918, and was sent to Camp Dodge, Iowa for training. He was sent to France with Company D, 350 Infantry, 88th Division in August, 1918, from Long Island, New York, where he came down with influenza. He was sent to the front line the day the Armistice was signed, on November 11, 1918. He remained in France for police action, returning home in May, 1919. He was discharged in June. After marrying his sweetheart, Anna KOCA, the couple made their home on the Kotas family farm in Section 3 of Glengary Township. They moved to town in 1925. (Milligan, p 358-359).

    A 1943 graduate of Milligan High School, he attended business college in Lincoln before serving in the military. After his discharge, he attended the University of Nebraska. He and wife JoAnn live in Sioux Falls, South Dakota and have three children: Paul, Mary (Mrs. Norman Kaczmarek), and Susan (Mrs. Mark Oppegard). (Milligan, p 305).

    Frank E. Hrdy 82, passed away Friday (2/27/09) in Lincoln. Hrdy was born in Milligan, Neb. He graduated from the University of Nebraska with a BA in accounting and was a member of Sigma Chi Fraternity. He served in WWII and later lived with his wife, Joan, in Sioux Falls, S.D. for over 50 years where they raised their family. In Sioux Falls he was a member of First United Methodist church and was honored by achieving the Worshipful Grand Master of the Masonic Lodge of Minnehaha County. Frank was a golfer, loved to travel, an avid reader, and an accomplished bridge player. He shall always be remembered for his sense of humor, infectious laugh, and the multiple stories and jokes that he would tell over and over again. Frank was a devoted and faithful fan of all Nebraska sport teams. He will be dearly missed by his family and friends.

    He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 58 year, Joan Maxon Hrdy; his parents, Mary Holpuch Hrdy and Frank L. Hrdy; his sister, Eleanor Hrdy Vavra; and Irma Hrdy Larsen. Frank is survived by his children, Paul Hrdy and wife, Helen; Mary Kaczmarek and husband, Norman; and Susan Oppegard and husband, Mark. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Kari Caddell and spouse, Beau; Kristin Livers and spouse, Josh; Tom Kaczmarek and wife, Vanessa; and Beth Kaczmarek; and his sister, Jo Ann Hrdy Keller. Also surviving are multiple nieces and nephews.

    Private burial. No visitation. Frank had requested that memorials be sent to Trinity United Methodist Church, 1345 S. 16th Street, Lincoln, NE 68502 or charity of choice. Arrangements by Butherus, Maser & Love Funeral Home.

After his basic training in Camp Gordon, Georgia he was stationed in Korea as a Military Policeman, where he was responsible for transporting prisoners of war. After his discharge, he returned to Saline County, Nebraska to farm. He moved back to the Kotas family farm, making his home with his parents, after his father retired. Along with farming, he is a hog feeder and breeder, a member of the American Legion and Cornhuskers Lodge, along with serving on the board of the Milligan Auditorium and Ceski Brati cemetery.     Phyllis J. Engle

    Funeral services for Phyllis will be held on Tuesday, February 3, 2015 at 10:30 AM at First Congregational United Church of Christ with Pastor Diane Ryder officiating.

    Visitation will be begin on Monday, February 2, 2015 at 1:00 PM until 8:00 PM at Farmer & Son Funeral Home in Geneva, NE.

    Graveside services will be held in the Geneva Public Cemetery.

    Memorials are to be directed to the family for a later designation.

    Phyllis Jean Engle was born to Anton E. Kotas and Gertrude (Deaver) Kotas on December 20, 1925 at the family farm near Tobias, NE, and passed away January 29, 2015 at Heritage Crossings in Geneva, NE, at the age of 89 years, 1 month and 9 days. She was one of four children in the family.

    Phyllis was born and raised on the family farm near Tobias, NE, and was baptized in the Catholic Faith as a child. She attended the Lone Star Country School through the 8th grade and graduated from Milligan High School in 1943. After high school she was employed at the Fairmont State Airbase.

    Phyllis was united in marriage to George A. Engle of Geneva on April 25, 1946 and resided on a farm northeast of Geneva. After Phyllis married George, she joined the First Congregational Church. They had three children, Diane, George "Jr." and Barbara.

    Phyllis was a quiet spoken lady and always found the good in everyone. She was a good cook, baker, and seamstress and loved her large garden.

    George and Phyllis purchased the First Congregational Church parsonage on August 1, 1974 and together with Diane they moved in to town in December 1974. After moving to town Phyllis and Diane would drive to the country to raise baby chicks and a large garden.

    She enjoyed dancing to Czech music. You could usually find George and Phyllis every Sunday at Pla-Mor Ballroom dancing the night away. While they were at Pla-Mor they ended up making many dancing friends.

    Phyllis served her church in many capacities; as a member of the Women's Fellowship, she served as the President for several years. During holiday season she was more than willing to help with Thanksgiving Dinner the church put together. She was always willing to help the ladies of the church put together a meal for the family and congregation of a fellow member who had passed away. She was also a member of the Geneva Legion Auxiliary Post #68.

    A favorite saying to her kids and one they will always remember was, "Two wrongs never makes it right".

    She was preceded in death by her parents, brother, Donald Kotas; brothers-in-law, Francis "Fritz" Greenlee, Frank, Harold and Willis Engle; sisters-in-laws, Anna Vnoucek, Helen and Beth Engle; niece, Debbie Wiltshire; nephews, Herald Brian Wiltshire, Lawrence Engle and great-niece, Kristin Engle.

    Phyllis is survived by her husband, George A. of Geneva; son, George Jr. and wife Susan of Geneva; daughters, Diane Engle of Geneva, Barbara Trapp and husband Tom of Geneva; sisters, Delmary Wiltshire of Lincoln, Faye Greenlee of York; sisters-in-law, Eleanor (Arlan) Becker of Exeter, Ruth (Delbert) Sorge of Geneva, Mary (Ronald) Uldrich of Milligan; brother-in-law, Joe A. Vnoucek of Friend; grandchildren, Loren Stephenson of Fairmont, Teresa (Herman) Rodriguez of Pecos, NM, James (Jean) Engle of Geneva, Rueben (Lisa) Engle of Clive, IA, Crystal Engle of York; 5 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren and lots of nieces, nephews and friends.

She was born on September 5, 1932, in Tobias, Nebraska, to Anton and Gertrude Kotas. Faye was a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and sister who will be deeply missed by her family and friends.

    Faye married her US Air Force sweetheart, Francis Clinton Greenlee, aka "Fritz" on April 12th 1958 in Lincoln Nebraska. They began their married life together in the Air Force, living a world of adventure that took this sweet small-town farm girl all over this great country and she loved every minute of it. During their travels, they had three daughters, Monica and Mary who were born in Anchorage, Alaska, and Jenny who was born in Dover, Delaware.

    After retiring from the AF, Fritz and Faye settled in York, Nebraska and never left since they found their forever home in York. Faye worked as a Teacher's Aide at Edison School and later as an Administrator at the Superintendent's Office. Her dedication to education and her impact on the lives of students will always be remembered.

    Faye's selflessness and abundant kind spirit were never more obvious as she tirelessly cared for Fritz during his long, hard battle with Alzheimer's. staying by his side until it was time for him to watch over her in Heaven. She was an amazing and supportive mother to her three daughters and was an over the moon grandmother to her grandson Ethan. She also had a special place in her heart for her numerous dogs, whom she spoiled endlessly, including Tramp, Duke, Coco, Cannon, Frankie, Dutch, Finn and Henry.

    Faye was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, where she found solace and strength in her faith. Outside of her family, career and religious commitments, Faye enjoyed spending her leisure time taking walks with Fritz and the dogs, reading, enjoying nature, and a good mystery on TV. These hobbies brought her joy and relaxation.

    She is survived by her only living sister, Del Mary Wiltshire, her 3 daughters and her Grandson.

    The family would also like to thank the York EMT's the York Hospital and the incredible care given to her by her home health team.

    Faye Ann Greenlee, a remarkable woman who touched the lives of many, will be remembered for her kindness, love, and devotion. May she rest in eternal peace.

    A Mass of Christian burial is scheduled for 10:00 a.m., Friday, January 19, 2024 at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in York, NE. Interment will follow at St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery, east of York. Visitation will be held from 1-8 p.m., Thursday, with a Rosary being said at 6 p.m. that evening at Metz Mortuary. The family will greet friends following the Rosary.

    In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that memorials be made in Faye's memory to York Adopt-A-Pet or the Alzheimer's Association. These organizations were close to her heart, and any support would be greatly appreciated.

    Irma "Beth" Gordan, age 88, of Seward, formerly of Bradshaw, died Saturday, April 21, 2018 in Seward.

    She was born Irma Elizabeth Kotas at home in Monroe, on Sept.1, 1929, the oldest of William H. and Irma (Essex) Kotas. She graduated from Milligan High School in 1946 and attended Nebraska Wesleyan University for one year, earning her teaching certificate. She taught in Fillmore County Rural Schools District #44 and #95 for two years. She married Alvin L. Gordan on June 5, 1949, at the Milligan Methodist Church. Beth and Alvin lived in Meadow Grove where Alvin taught for one year. They then moved to Bradshaw to make their permanent home. They traveled to South Dakota for their honeymoon, and also to Texas, California, Idaho, Minnesota, Pennsylvania, Wisconsin and various states in between (traveling by car), as well as to Cancun, Mexico City, and several times to Hawaii. She loved to preserve garden produce that Alvin grew, crochet, sew clothes for her family, read books, and complete her family's history. She was a 60 year member of the Bradshaw United Methodist Church, and was also a member of the Order of the Eastern Star (5 different Nebraska Chapters), lastly in Utica #199 for over 60 years.

    Beth is survived by their children, Joyce Bogen Campbell of Bradshaw, Trish (Dave) Collister of Dwight and Jim Gordan of Bradshaw. Grandchildren include, Mark (Nichole) Bogen of Bennett, Liz (James) Soukup of Lincoln, Brian Campbell (Amy Richardson) of Lincoln, Cody Campbell of Bradshaw, Melanie (Dan) Collister-Foulk of Seward, Jayme (Micah) Pomplun of Broken Bow and Kenzie Gordan of Norfolk. Great-grandchildren, Anya and Sean Bogan, Kaylyn and Jessa Soukup, Alivia Campbell, Xander and Isabel Foulk, Khloe, Kinlee and Kenna Pomplun.

    She is also survived by her sisters, Jeanie Holtmeier and Mary Ann Rut; sister-in-law, Elisa Gordan along with several nieces and nephews.

    Alvin died in 2004, and she continued to live at home alone until May of 2016 when she moved into an apartment at Brookdale Senior Living in Seward to be closer to her daughter, Trish.

    Beth is preceded in death by her grandparents; parents; husband; grandson, John Gordan; great-grandson, Evan Soukup; brothers-in-law, Bill Gordan, Lee Holtmeier and Roger Rut.

    Funeral services are scheduled for 10 a.m., Saturday, April 28, 2018 at the Bradshaw United Methodist Church in Bradshaw with the Reverend Karla Sheffy officiating. Interment will follow at the Plainfield Cemetery, west of Bradshaw. Visitation will be from 1 '96 8 p.m. Friday, April 27, with her family greeting friends from 6:30 '96 8 p.m. at the mortuary in York. Memorials are directed to family for later designation.

    KEARNEY Willa J. "Jeanie" Holtmeier, 81, of Kearney, formerly of Grand Island and Lexington, passed away on Thursday, July 26, 2018.

    Service and celebration of Jeanie's life will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Peace Lutheran Church, 1710 N. North Road in Grand Island. The Rev. Michael Reiners will officiate. Burial will be in Grand Island City Cemetery.

    Jeanie was born on Sept. 12, 1936 in Wahoo, the daughter of William H. and D. Irma (Essex) Kotas. She grew up and graduated from high school at Milligan.

    On August 4, 1957, Jeanie was married to LeeRoy M. Holtmeier. The couple lived in Guide Rock, Cincinnati, Ohio, Lexington and Leola, Pa., before moving to Grand Island.

    Jeanie was a member of Peace Lutheran Church, Women in Missions and Stephen Ministry. She loved family and friends and thoroughly enjoyed being a cheerleader for all of her grandkids' activities. She also loved playing cards, gardening, baking, sewing, volunteering, planning trips and traveling.

    Those left to cherish her memory include her son and daughter-in-law, Doug and Brigitte Holtmeier of Kearney; a daughter, Shari Holtmeier and LaDon Biason of Lutz, Fla.; grandchildren, Liza Lorenz and her husband, Chad, Blake Holtmeier and Brady Holtmeier; a great-grandson, Devon Lorenz; and a sister, Mary Ann Rut of Lincoln.

    She was welcomed into heaven by her husband, Lee; her parents, and a sister, Beth Gordan.

    Memorials are suggested to Peace Lutheran Church in Grand Island or St. John's Good Samaritan Society of Kearney.

Mary Ann had three children ? Gary Thiemann, Keith Rut and Karen McCain. Roger and Mary Ann were married 50-years before Roger passed away July 2011.

    Mary Ann is survived by her children Gary (Laurette) Thiemann of Shreveport, Louisiana, Keith (Patti) Rut of York, Nebraska and Karen (Todd) McCain of Lincoln, Nebraska. She had eight grandchildren, Micheala Rut of Kearney, Nebraska, Emi (Curtis) Leicht of Lincoln, Nebraska, Sam McCain of Fort Moore, Georgia, Janell (Bill) Green of York, Nebraska, Ashley Reimers (Matt Miller) of Sterling, Colorado, Lecia Reimers (Aaron Schaefer) of Sterling, Colorado, Kevin (Laura Jean) Thiemann of Plano, Texas and Jody (Sam) Thiemann of Shreveport, Louisiana as well as seven great-grandchildren.

    Preceded in death by her husband Roger Rut, parents William and Irma Kotas, in-laws James and Mildred Rut, two sisters and brothers in law Beth (Alvin) Gordon and Jeanie (Lee) Holtmeier.

    Honorary pallbearers are her grandchildren and her Butler Avenue neighbors.
