Several member trees on Ancestry.com have this incorrect information as well.

The maiden name of Daniel's wife, Mary, has currently NOT been proven.

In an undated clipping titled LOCKHART ADDS TO HAWTHORN HISTORY from the JASPER NEWS BOY, provided to me by Kenneth Morgan, Carolyn Lockhart writes:

"...DANIEL (born 1802 in North Carolina) and MARY MORGAN....were Cherokee Indians and are buried in the woods at Roganville in Jasper County... "

In a letter to Melinda Strong, dated 4 September 1999, Carolyn further speculates that Mary Morgan could be "a Proctor because the Jone's witnessed a will in the adjoining county to Decatur for a Thomas Proctor. It is my personal belief (I never researched) that ...it was not feasible to register White-(Native) American marriages...they were frowned upon." It is interesting that marriage records can be found for all of Daniel's brothers, but no record can be located for his marriage to Mary. Carolyn added that "when Elizabeth was born in North Carolina in 1830--the family in North Carolina were running from the government who was about to push all the Indians to Oklahoma in 1836, so they packed up & headed for Georgia---because the Jones took part in running the Creek Indians out of Georgia in 1838."

Jo Ann Lee Gartig wrote, on 12 September 1999, that "All of my life I have heard that there was an Indian somewhere in the Lee family, but none of my aunts or uncles knew which branch. It was a surprise to hear it was not on the Lee side, but the Morgan side, which I had never suspected. I learned from Bonnie Jones Smith (great granddaughter of Elizabeth Morgan and chairperson of the Newton County Historical Commission) that it was Mary, wife of Daniel. Bonnie's older sister, Verbal, who died in an auto accident about 1995, told Bonnie that Mary was an Indian. It seems that when Verbal was in her early teens, her grandmother Sara Jane told her about her Cherokee Indian grandmother." Robert Wall of Pearland was also told tales by his grandmother of the Morgan's Cherokee ancestry while he was growing up.

In order to attempt to help prove the numerous family stories that Mary was a full blood Native American, a direct female descendant of Mary's volunteered to take an mtDNA test.The test was done by FamilyTreeDNA in Houston. They tested the mtDNA for HVR1 (16001 to 16569). The test was designed to show her mtDNA, any differences from the Cambridge Reference Sequence, and the meaning of probability between matches. The test would pinpoint which of the "The Daughters of Eve" Mary and her direct female descendant could be traced back too, as well as identifying the ethnic and geographic origins, both recent and far distant. Among other features, this test would indicate matrilineal Native-American Ancestry, and which of the 5 major groups that settled in the Americas were the most probable ancestors.

The volunteer had the following line of descent from Mary:

The mtDNA results came back as HV, or Helena, a primarily European haplogroup, most prevalent in Western Europe. The single difference from the Cambridge Reference Sequence was CRS 16311 C. The HV results preclude Native American ancestry on the matrilineal track -- the haplogroup would have to be A, B, C, D or a variety of X to show matrilineal ancestry as Native American. Therefore it appears that Mary Morgan's mother WAS NOT a full blooded Native American. It is still possible, however, she had native american ancestors, but if so it was not through her direct maternal line.

We do now know that Mary's maternal line reaches back to the Helena Clan. Helena is from the Greek and means "light." This clan's descendants are the most numerous in Europe, having started 20,000 years ago from a hunting family in the Dordogne region of the ice-capped Pyrenees in southern France. As the climate warmed, Helena's descendants trekked northward to what is now England, some 12,000 years ago. Members of this group are now present in all European countries.

Prof. Sykes and Oxford University researchers in England have identified seven ancestral matriarchal groups from which all Europeans appear to be descended. Every European can trace his or her evolutionary history back to the seven ancestral mother groups, also referred to as the Seven European Daughters of Eve. Sykes et al obtained buccal cells from 6,000 individuals and analyzed the samples using the mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) analysis. It is known that mtDNA mutates at a very slow rate, such as 1 mutation in every 10,000 generations or 20,000 years. So they figured that the women would have lived between 8,000 and 45,000 years ago. What is amazing is that all seven of the genetic groups appear to be descended from the Lara clan, one of three clans that still exist today in Africa. This is called the African Eve theory. It was proposed in the late 1980's by Allan Wilson, Mark Stoneking and others. The African Eve theory states that all humans share a common African ancestor. As of 2002, there are believed to be 36 distinct genetic groups worldwide. From Patrick Guinness, "In mtDNA, there are a maximum of 14 mutations between all humans (so far)."

Mary married Daniel Morgan before 1826. Daniel (son of Rueben Morgan and Dorcus Newton) was born about 1800 in North Carolina; died before 1886 in Roganville, Jasper County, Texas; was buried in Morgan Cemetery, Jasper County, Texas. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

No record of John and Sarah's marriage has yet been located. However, it can be proved by a Deed to John McLemore by the Heirs of Daniel Morgan, dated the Seventh day of January, A.D. 1889, Jasper County, Texas. It was filed for record Jan'y 8th 1889 at 10 o'clock am and recorded January 16th 1889 at 5 pm by AJ Rigsby, Clk. (Vol P, Page 367). This deed indicates that the "heirs at law of DANIEL MORGAN and MARY MORGAN deceased . . . . (include) the grandchildren of the said decedents, viz: J.F. McLEMORE and Mary Ann (McLemore) HORN and her husband Elma HORN... " John Finn and Mary Ann were apparently the only two of John and Sarah's six children still surviving in 1889.

Sarah apparently died sometime before John's remarriage in 1859, Nan Kittell indicated that she might have died in Alexandria, Louisiana, on the way to Newton County. As her youngest daughter, Mary Ann, was said to be born in Newton County, it would appear Sarah probably died shortly after the family arrived in Texas.

In a letter provided to me by Kenneth Morgan, written by Carolyn Lockhart, she indicated that Sarah's parents, Daniel and Mary Morgan, were "100% Cherokee Indian." She said that Sarah's sister, Elizabeth, instructed her children not to mention their heritage. Elizabeth, however, always wore fringe on her dresses to secretly remind herself of her Cherokee forebearers.

Her paternal line were said to have emigrated to the United States from Ireland or Wales, so the Native heritage was presumed to be maternal. Jo Ann Lee Gartig suggests she might actually have been associated with the Creek tribe, not Cherokee. However, mtDNA testing shows her direct maternal line was HV, a very common European marker, and not one associated with native heritage. It is possible she did indeed have some Native American ancestry, but if she did, it was not through either her direct paternal or direct maternal lines, and she was certainly not "100%."

Sarah married John M. McLemore before 1844. John (son of Tobias McLemore, Sr. and Sarah "Sallie" ???) was born about 1822 in North Carolina; died in Jan 1891 in Jasper County, Texas; was buried in Zion Hill Cemetery, Jasper, Jasper County, Texas. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

James appears to have been the trailblazer in the family. In 1850, he was already in Jasper County, Texas, while his parents and siblings were still in Decatur County, Georgia. He was listed as a laborer in the home of 74 year old Elijah ISAACS, born in South Carolina. The rest of the family arrived after James, moving to Jasper sometime prior to the 1860 census. Elijah ISAACS is said to be the son of Samuel ISAACS of Lincoln Co., TN; Pendleton Co, S.C, Wilkes Co, N.C. and Lincoln Co, TN. He was a twin, his brother being Elisha ISAACS. He was married to Esther Donaho. Steve Moody, a descendant of Elijah ISAACS, wrote me that "Elija Isaacks' mother was Mary Morgan, daughter of Joseph Morgan Jr. I've never been able to figure out how James was related, I thought maybe he was a cousin."

Floyd Boyett sent an email, dated April 2, 2006, with the following information about the Military service of James Morgan:

"The family is on the indigent list for Jasper Co., James is the only James (or J. M.) Morgan on the 1860 Jasper census and the only James (or J. M.) Morgan on the 1870 Jasper census. Also found James M. Morgan, son of Daniel and Mary, listed in "Civil War Soldiers of Jasper and Newton Counties of Texas" published by Ericson Books of Nacogdoches, Texas. Also found J. Morgan on the Civil War Soldiers and Sailors System web site that was in the 13th Texas Calvary, Burnett's Regiment. I think we can safely say this is our man. He has no Confederate headstone."

James married Nancy Harrell on 6 Nov 1854 in Jasper County, Texas. Nancy was born on 6 Nov 1834 in Florida; died on 9 Mar 1897 in Jasper County, Texas. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

Said by some to have been born in Surry County, NC, but no proof cited. This seems unlikely as the family was listed in Sampson County as of the 1830 census.

Carolyn Lockhart wrote that after the death of Sion Jones in Georgia "Elizabeth sold her land in Decatur County (ca 1868) and came to Texas. She and [her widowed sister] Dorcas Lee had about 9 children with them. Someone met them in Galveston and it was the first time she had ever seen an iron cook stove. She instructed her kids not to mention their Indian ancestry. She herself never mentioned it even though she always wore fringes on her dresses to remind her own self of her heritage. She was 61 when she died, never remarried and never filed a pension from Sion Jones CSA record."

In a letter from Carolyn Lockhart, she states that Elizabeth died in the home of her oldest son, Newton B. Jones. Like the Morgan's, the Jones family were also of Welsh ancestry. The Hawthorne family were neighbors in Georgia and also in Jasper County.

Ruby Boyett showed she died in 1897, but this can not be correct as (1) she had a daughter born in 1899 (2) she can be found on the 1900 census with her husband and children and (3) her tombstone is said to be inscribed 13 Dec 1902.

Elizabeth married Sion Jones on 3 Feb 1853 in Decatur County, Georgia. Sion (son of Matthew Jones and Elizabeth Wester) was born in 1825 in Pulaski County, Georgia; died on 14 Aug 1864 in Georgia; was buried in Atlanta, Fulton County, Georgia. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

Rueben Morgan may have moved back to Florida after his 1857 marriage in Jasper, Texas. In an email dated April 2, 2006, Floyd Boyett passed along the following information:

"I did find a Reuben Morgan, Co. G, 3rd. Florida Infantry (Pensacola area) as a Private on the Civil War Soldiers and Sailors System site. This should be Daniel's Reuben and the man we were looking for."

Based on the census listing below, it appears that Rueben Morgan died sometime between 1865 and 1870, perhaps as a result of the Civil War? It further appears that Susan remarried. Her second spouse appears to have died as well:

At the time of the 1880 census, 14 year old Josephine is living in the home of John McLemore, her uncle by marriage, and listed as Josephine Wilson.

Only Jesse and Allie are listed in the Estate settlement of Daniel Morgan as "surviving grandchildren." It therefore appears that Eliza and Josephine may have died prior to the settlement of Daniel's estate in 1886.

Rueben married Susan Neal on 25 Feb 1857 in Jasper County, Texas. Susan was born before 1837 in Louisiana; and died. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

His name was listed on the Decatur GA census EXTRACT as Oliver, in error.

Carolyn Lockhart wrote that it was her understanding that Owen had never been married. Jo Ann Lee Gartig concurred, writing that "In following Owen through all the census records from GA to TX, I do not believe that Owen ever married because he was mentally retarded in some way. Decatur Co, 1850 Owen was 16 (and it read "Owen" on that microfilm because that is how I copied it before I ever saw "Oliver" on your paper). Jasper County census of 1860 Owen is 24 and listed as "domestic." 1870 Jasper County census clearly listed Owen, 38 as "idiot." 1880 Jasper County census shows Owen, 45, single, and brother to Dorcus. Ruby Boyett Burkett wrote that Owen was able to help his father with farming, so was not likely retarded. She understood that he did suffer seizures of some sort, and never married.

Not listed as an heir of Daniel Morgan in 1886. Did he die before 1886?

At the time of the 1860 census, Duncan Morgan (Daniel's brother) had two young men with the last name of Morgan listed as "Domestics" in his home. Nan McCoy Kittell says these two family members were actually slaves, and not family members Could the same be true for this Daniel/David Morgan? Maybe this is why he is not listed with the family after the Civil War, and also why he is not listed as a heir.

Notes:

In the 1850 Decatur County, Georgia census, he is listed as born in Georgia. On the 1860 census, his birthplace is instead shown as North Carolina.

Nan Kittell could find no further record of William McLemore after 1860, and presumed he did not survive the Civil War.

In the Fall 1998 issue of the Red River County Texas Genealogical Society, a list is included of "the John C. Burkes Camp # 656 of the United Confederate Veterans was established in Red River County, Texas in the summer of 1890. This organization met yearly, usually in August, on campgrounds that were located about one mile northeast of Clarksville. It eventually became a four or five day affair with dancing, ball games, food, music, carnival attractions and patriotic speeches. It disbanded after the last Confederate Veteran member died and the campground was sold June 23, 1942. The actual list was found in the RRCTGS files and was transcribed from original records that were in poor condition. The listing includes a W.H. McLemore

There is a William H. McLemore, parents unknown born, on a WorldConnect Tree on RootsWeb that is connected to Red River county. If the tree is accurate, he was actually born in Red River County versus Georgia, so he would not be the same William McLemore as our son of John and Sarah.

He is listed as William H. McLemore, head of household, in the 1870 census for Jasper Co., MO, age 27, born TX.

He is listed as W. H. McLemore, head of household, in the 1880 census for Red River Co., TX, age 37, born TX, father born VA, mother born AL.

He is listed as W. H. Mclemore, head of household, in the 1900 census for Red River Co., TX, age 57, born June 1843, married 33? year, born TX, father born VA, mother born AL.
I have found a Mrs. A. A. Mclemore who was married to W. H. McLemore.he died
2 nov. 1912. Mrs. A. A. was born in Lamar County, Tx and applied for a widows of soldiers
pension in Red River Co. Tx. March 1913. She states they were married 13 Nov. 1866 in Jasper Co. There is at least one other William McLemore was was a veteran of the Civil War, as he is buried in Austin and not in the Woodland Graveyard in Norht Texas. Tom McLemore emailed Melinda Strong on June 9, 2003 that "Last week Bonnie and I were in Austin....(and) we stopped at the Texas State Cemetery which is on 7th Street, near downtown. There is a veteran of the Civil War by the name of William McLemore buried there in a section reserved for veterans of that war. I wonder if it might be the McLemore that Nan Kittrel mentioned to you. I don't remember any other details like date of death."

However, this William buried in Austin could be yet another William McLemore of around the same age as the William McLemore who was a son of John and Sarah (Morgan) McLemore.

Finn's middle name could have been Fenton (based on a poll tax receipt from Jasper) or Finerel (based on the middle name of his son, Rufus) or Finn, as he was commonly called.

At the time of the 1880 census, he was widowed, and living in the home of his in-laws with his young daughter.

He was a farmer. On the 1900 Sabine County census, he is shown in household 22, next to the Henry S. White family, his wife's brother. Household 36 is that of Thomas E. McLemore, his half brother.

Finn died in at the home of his son, Vessie McLemore. Vessie and Nina had been caring for him. Granddaughter Evon remembers she and some cousins going out into the woods to gather wildflowers for him while her father built a coffin. Her father and his brothers took the coffin by cart to the Gravel Hill cemetery a few days later.

Susan Amanda "Mandy" Morgan married William Claud when she was approximately 39 years old, and was stepmother to his three grown children from a prior marriage. The 1910 census indicates that she herself was the mother of 1 child, but the space indicating whether or not this child was still living was left blank. As no child under the age of 11 was listed on the census, it appears likely to have died young.

At the 1920 census, they were still in Jasper, but now in JP 3, ED 75. Only William's oldest daughter was still at home, but she was listed as Maggie, age 42, instead of as Sarah.

Mandy was widowed prior to the 1930 census. At that time, she is living in Jasper, along with her older sister, Mary Morgan, who appears to have been a lifelong spinster.

Mrs. Mary Matilda Hawthorne, 80, of Roganville died at her home Friday evening following a brief illness of pneumonia. Mrs. Hawhorne was a pioneer settler of Jasper County, coming here from Decatur, Georgia with her family when a small girl. She married J.T. Hawthorne here in 1871 and survived him by about a year.

This couple were the parents of 14 children all now living. Thirteen of the children were at her bedside when death came. A daughter, Mrs. Martha Norburg, of Ashland, Oregon, failed to arrive in time.

Mrs. Hawthorne was a devoted mother and a sincere neighbor in the community where she spent her life. She was active in church work, having been a member of the Primitive Baptist Church for the past 45 years. She took an interest in civic and educational affairs.

She is survived by six daughters, Mrs. Lula West of Kirbyville, Mrs. Ola Jones of Roganville, Mrs. Hattie Martin of Vidor, Mrs. Lizzie Hooks of Bleakwood, Mrs. Leachie Day of Newton, and Mrs. Norburg; eight sons, F.P., J.C., J.T., and Walter all of Kirbyville; Sion, Polk, Tommy and Zora all of Roganville, 96 grandchildren, 35 great grandchildren, and two great great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at the Friendship cemetery near Roganville at 3 pm Saturday, with the Rev. S.D. Newton of Orange, the Rev. A.J. Dubois of Jasper, and the Rev. Leonard Richardson and Rev. Audrey Richardson of Buna officiating. Burial will be under the direction of the Stringer funeral home of Jasper.

"Tim began his working life as a teamster, age 17 (where on the Jasper County 1880 Federal census he was boarding with Newton B. Jones) in the logging camps of Jasper County, along the Neches River between Kirbyville and Buna. A few years later he was engineer of the Texas Tram, a logging train which ran through the Neches River "bottom" near Buna and Ten Acre Lake. He went to San Antonio to earn $50 so that he could marry. At age 27, on October 6, 1886, Tim married Emily Ann Westbrook. The marriage took place at Tram Town, Jasper County. Two sons were born in Tram Town and both died in infancy. The couple took each infant in turn to be buried at Farr's Chapel, Farrsville, Newton County, Texas. Emily Ann's family lived at Farrsville.

On October 10, 1896, (at) age 37, Tim Lee was ordained by the Council of the South East Texas Free Will Baptist Association as a Free Will Baptist Minister. He was Minister of Erin Free Will Baptist Church, Erin Community, Jasper County. Throughout the years of his ministry, he was a circuit minister and one of the several churches that he traveled to preach in was Farr's Chapel.

At age 38, the family moved to Kirbyville, Jasper County and built their "dog-trot" home. This was one of the first homes built in Kirbyville when Mr. Kirby was marking off lots for homesites. The seventh child, Lela Lanine was the first born in the new house...(and) the remaining children were all born in this home.

Tim went to work for Mr. Kirby, owner of Kirby Lumber Company, as a timber evaluator. He was called a "log scaler" and measured amount of timber with a log scaling stick. For a while he was engineer for a log train and worked at night reparing engines in the engine shop. Tim worked for Kirby for many years until the lumber company burned in 1917. Then he went to work for Trout Creek Lumber Company as a night watchman at age 58. This lumber mill was located behind the old Kirbyville school building and near Tim's house. In October, 1927, age 67, Tim attended the 38th annual session of South East Texas Free Will Baptist Association at the Friendship Church near Roganville. He also attended the 39th annual session at Cairo Springs and in 1930 he attended the session at North Zulch, Madison County, Texas.

In 1931, Tim was 71 years old and still employed as a night watchman at the Trout Creek Lumber Mill in Kirbyville. He died of pneumonia, April 16, 1931 at home. Services were held at the family home and Tim was buried in Kirbyville Cemetery.

Chester Lee recounted to his daughter that "The old pendulum clock the family owned was won by Tim. A Kirbyville store owner offered the clock as a prize to the man who paid up his bill. Poppa owed 50 cents and paid up."

Vessie McLemore grew up on his parent's farm in the first precinct of Sabine County. The adjoining farm was owned by his Uncle, Henry Strickland White, Jr. The 1900 census indicates that Vessie, who was 15, could read and write, and that he has attended three months of school that year, as had his brothers Rufus and Earnest. His daughter Evon has a class picture of Vessie from around this period. Evon said that Vessie didn't have much of a formal education, and probably stopped attending school altogether around this time. Vessie's wife, Nina, told her granddaughter Melinda that he even taught school for a time, however Evon doubts that this was so. The 1940 Federal Census indicates he had graduated from the Seventh Grade. His wife, Nina, had made it through only Six years of schooling.

When Vessie was 22, he married Nina Fuller,who was 16. On the 1910 Sabine County census they were shown living on a home farm in precinct six, near both Joe Fuller (Nina's father) and John and Jane Fullen (her mother's parents). Nina was shown as being the mother of two children, neither of them living. Nina's first pregnancy ended in a miscarriage, and her next three babies died shortly after they were born. Her first child lived only 10 weeks. Evon said that Nina and Vessie's baby slept in their bed with them, as was the custom of the time. One morning when they woke up, the baby was dead. Tera Fuller, Nina's sister, reported that Nina always worried that she had somehow accidentally caused the babies death, maybe by rolling over it. Evon conjectured that the baby probably died of SIDS, which her mother had never heard of. The second baby lived only a day. In 1911, they had a third baby which also lived only one day. The three babies are buried side by side.

In 1913, Nina and Vessie's son Percy was born. Over the next six years, the McLemore's had three more children, daughter Evon and sons' Earl and Ray. Vessie owned a store in Steep Creek, a sawmill village eight miles south of San Augustine. He also raised cattle. He regularly published a small advertisement in the 1918 Sabine County newspaper, offering a reward for any stray cattle returned to him. His brand was VM on the hip. He later adopted the "Running M" as his brand. Evon remembers her father buying a Brahma Bull, in an effort to improve his herd. Most of the ranchers in Sabine County didn't fence in their cattle, they allowed them to freely roam about to forage for food. Evon remembers people being afraid of the "Brimmer." He wasn't a particularly mean bull, he was just so different from the east texas scrub cattle that everyone raised. Tom McLemore, Evon Tisdale and Melinda Strong had a conversation in November, 2002 with Vance Hargrove that came around to the subject of Vessie's missing cattle. Vance was a neighbor of the McLemore's when they lived in Bronson, and a good friend of Percy's. He said that Vessie asked he and Percy one day to go looking for several cattle that were missing. They found evidence that some of the laborers in the nearby saw mills had been poaching from Vessie's herd. They told Vessie they had found cattle bones in the yards of some of the workers, workers who looked to be half-starved. Vessie said they probably were half-starved, and told the boys not to report their findings to the sheriff.

A son of Enlow Birdwell relayed a similar story to Tom McLemore in September, 2007, at the funeral of Lynn McLemore. He recalled that Enlow had killed one of Vessie's cows and was taking it home to feed his family. He was caught in the act by Vessie. He confessed to what he had done, and said that he was only doing so because his family had done without for a long time, and were starving. Vessie told him to take the beef home and use it as he intended, but added, "let this be the last one of my cows that you steal." It was. When times became more prosperous, Enlow began raising a small herd of cattle of his own. He went to Vessie to borrow some money to get a start. Vessie gave him one of his checkbooks, and told him to simply use it as he needed, he trusted Enlow and knew together they could keep an accurate accounting of what he borrowed. Enlow often told his family that Vessie was the one who helped him get a start in life, and that he especially valued the trust he showed in him.

Vessie's older children attended their primary grades in Sabine County, but had to commute to San Augustine for High School. Evon says that during the winter, she and her brothers boarded with the family of Dr. Davis, who lived nearby the school. In the late 1920s, the family moved to San Augustine. Evon remembers that her mother suffered another devasting miscarriage, which nearly killed her. A few years later, Nina's youngest children were born, son Tommy in 1931 and son Lynn in 1933. They lived in a house Vessie renovated just off Main Street, and had a small home farm. Evon remembers her father first built a garage, and they slept and cooked in this until he had finished with the house. Their home was still standing in 1997. Even the roof is the same one Vessie laid. It is now the second house on the left, on present day Whitton street. It is a block away from the local elementary school. Tom remembers an indigent Civil War veteran, in his late eighties, who his father took into their home. Tom vividly recalls the stories he told about the war each night at dinner.

In the December 21, 1939 issue of the San Augustine Tribune, V.E. McLemore offered a $5.00 reward to anyone who found his dun muley cow branded "M" on the left loin. Around 1940, Vessie sold their house in the city, and bought some ranch land several miles outside of town.

Vessie's brothers and sisters used to say, admiringly, that "Vessie could stand on the corner and make money." He was an industrious man, with a strong enterpreneurial bent. His first job was working in the sawmills, with his brother, Rufus. But Vessie hated working for others, and saved up enough money to buy a general store in Steep Creek. This was around the time of World War I. It was a rough part of town, and he had both black and white laborers from the sawmills as customers.

The sheriff was a frequent visitor to the store. Evon remembers him always having a kind word and a piece of candy for her. He had a reputation for brutality however, and she recalls that he and a brother were eventually sent to jail after being convicted of murder. One day, the sheriff came to the store asking about a particular Negro laborer. Vessie said he hadn't seen him in days. The sheriff asked Vessie to call him the next time this man came in, telling Vessie he intended to kill him. Vessie went home and discussed the sheriff's threat with Nina, worrying about what he should do. In the middle of the night he got dressed, and tracked the man down in his home. He warned him of the sheriff's threat. The man pawned his pocket watch to Vessie, then and there, and used the money to flee town. He succesfully escaped the sheriff and was never heard of again. Vessie later gave the pocket watch to his son Earl. After Earl's death, his children gave this watch to their Uncle Tom, and Tom eventually passed this keepsake down to his eldest daughter, Melinda. It was a brass plated Studebaker watch from the South Bend Watch Company, and widely sold by mail order in the 1920's. These watches were sold on credit, and could be purchased with a down payment of $1. With the onset of the Depression, the company found itself with many delinquent accounts and was forced to close. After the mill near Steep Creek closed, Vessie was also forced to close his store. His family feared that they'd soon be in the poorhouse. But Vessie continued to prosper. He worked as a rancher primarily, leasing and operating land in Pearsall, Garwood and in various sites throughout South and East Texas. He operated up to 20,000 acres at any given time. He also owned and operated a cotton gin and a meat processing plant. He involved his children in all these ventures. He was well known in the community for his willingness to extend credit or make loans to poor families, black or white. Tom McLemore recalls from looking at a lot of the notes he had drawn up that he charged from 6% to 10% compound interest. He was good fried to Will Wade, proprietor of the City Cafe, and W.J. (Wade) McClanahan, Deputy Sherriff of San Augustine.

Vessie felt a strong committment to provide for his family. Before he died, he built a home for each of his eldest four children, as well as giving them each 50 acres of land. He left his homestead and 400 acre ranch, jointly, to his two youngest sons.

When Vessie was in his forties, he was gored by a bull on the ranch. The wound was just under his left eye. He suffered from nearly incapacitating headaches for the rest of his life. In 1950, he had several massive strokes, and was unable to function normally after that. His wife nursed him at home until he died from a brain aneurysm in 1952.

Although Vessie didn't have much formal education, he was an extremely intelligent man. Tom and Evon remember that he read widely. Vessie's daughter, Evon, was the first of the family to graduate from college. She attended Stephen F. Austin in Nacogdoches, where she received a degree in education. She remembers coming home one weekend from college, and her father asked her to check something he had prepared. He had calculated the compound interest that was due on a loan he had made. She told him she didn't know how to do this. "What am I sending you to college for" he grumbled, "if they can't even teach you to calculate compound interest."

His obituary was published in the local papers, as well as in the January 23, 1952 issue of the Houston Post.

Vessie married Nina Ophelia Fuller on 7 Nov 1907 in Many, Sabine Parish, Louisiana. Rufus worked in the lumber yards, and in 1910, he was living in the Wilson Boarding house.

He was killed accidentally by a cousin of when he was 26. They and some friends had been drinking, and it was said that they were chasing each other on horseback with guns. Grover Eddings, a brother-in-law of Vessie McLemore, lived nearby the scene of the tragedy, and remembers tending to Rufus's body while the crowd waited for his parents to arrive.

Rufus's mother, Ruth White McLemore, was so overcome with bereavement that she kept her head bowed down for well over a year after his death. A picture of the unveiling of his tomb exists. The marker indicated he was a member of the Woodsmen of the World. His tombstone is inscribed "Asleep In Jesus - A loving son awaiting in Heaven for Mama to come."

Services held for Ernest McLemore

Funeral services were held for Earnest E. McLemore, 74 of Hemphill at 4 pm Tuesday, Oct 8, at the Gravel Hill Baptist Church with the Rev. E. E. Adams, pastor of Bulah Baptist Church near Pendleton in Louisiana. Assisting was the Rev. A.E. Armstrong, pastor of Gravehill church.

Mr. McLemore, a native and lifelong resident of Sabine County, died at 8:20 am Oct. 7 in the East Texas Convalescent Home, San Augustine, where he had been for seven weeks. He was a retired farmer.

Burial was in Gravel Hill cemetery under direction of Starr Funeral Home of Hemphill. Pallbearers were nephews, Max Cammack, Gayle Wyatt, Rufus McLemore, Earl McLemore, Marton Conn and Elroy Boyd.

Survivors are his wife, Mrs. Florence Boyd McLemore of Hemphill; two sons Hugh McLemore of Beaumont and Paul McLemore of Houston; one brother Ira McLemore of Hemphill, three sisters Miss Mollie (sic) McLemore and Mrs. Jack Cammack of Hemphilll and Mrs. Elvie Speights of Beaumont; and five grandchildren.

LOCAL WOMAN's FUNERAL HELD

Funeral services for Mrs. Mellie Mary McLemore of Hemphill were held Thursday in the Starr Funeral Home Chapel in Hemphill.

The Rev. Jim Turner, pastor of Hemphill First Baptist Church officiated. Burial will be in the Gravel Hill Cemetery in Sabine County.

Pallbearers included nephews Earl McLemore, Donald McLemore, Paul McLemore, Guy Hughes, Max Cammack and Jerry Van Valkenburg.

Mrs. McLemore died Wednesday at the ??? Manor Nursing Home of Hemphill.

Survivors are two sisters, Mrs. H.B. Cammack of Hemphill and Mrs. Elvie Speights.

Ruth Speights

Funeral services for Ruth Elvie Speights, 86, of Pineland were at 2 pm March 20 in the Starr Funeral Home Chapel with burial in Hemphill Cemetery.

Mrs. Speights died at 12:45 am March 19 in Hines Nursing Home in Pineland.

She was a lifelong resident of Sabine County.

Survivors include three daughters Mrs. Dorine Robinson of Pineland; Mrs. Laverne Gellatly of Beaumont and Mrs. Johnnie Hughes of Shreveport, La; one sister Mrs. Emma Cammack of Hemphill, three grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

KIRBYVILLE (Spl) ? Graveside services for F. Putt Hawthorne Sr., 95, of the Hawthorne community near Roganville will be held at 3:30 p.m. Thursday in the Wilkerson Cemetery in Newton County. Elmo Withers, an elder in the Primitive Baptist Church, will officiate. The Causey-Stringer Funeral Home of Kirbyville is in charge of arrangements. The body will remain at the family home until time for the services. Hawthorne died about 2 p.m. Wednesday in his home after a long illness. He was a lifelong resident of the area and was a Baptist. He was a farmer, a stockman and a member of a pioneer family of the Kirbyville area. Surviving are five sons, Harry, Austin, Johnny and Frank Hawthorne, all of Kountze, and Madison Hawthorne of Pasadena; one daughter, Mrs. Mildred Keates of Jasper; 19 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren; and six great-great grandchildren.

Joshua Timothy Hawthorn, 85, one of east Texas' most prominent pioneers, died at his home at Roganville, following a month's illness. "Uncle Tim," as he was known to his friends, was born in Decatur, Ga., February 2, 1849, but moved to Texas at the age of 8 years and has been a Jasper county resident ever since. This is the first death to occur in his immediate family despite the fact that he was the father of 14 children and now has about approximately 350 descendants. He has been a member of the Primitive Baptist Church for the last 45 years. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday at Friendship near Roganville. Elder S.D. Newton of the Primitive Baptist Church at Orange will officiate. Burial will follow there under the direction of the Stringer Undertaking Company of Jasper. He is survived by his wife, Mary; eight sons, F.P., J.C., J.T., Sion and Walter of Kirbyville. Polk, Tommie, and Zora of Roganville. six daughters. Mrs. H.C. West of Kirbyville, Mrs. D.A. Jones and Mrs. J.N. Martin of Roganville. Mrs. U.M. Hooks of Bleakwood, Mrs. C.S. Day of Newton and Mrs. Earl Norberg of Ashland Ore; 184 grandchildren and a number of great grandchildren.

Funeral services were held for Sion Hawthorne, 52, at the Zion Hill Cemetery Tuesday afternoon at 3:30 o'clock. The Rev. Leonard Richardson of Buna officiating. Arrangements were by the Stringer Funeral Home, Jasper.

Mr. Hawthorne died suddenly in his home in Roganville about 7 o'clock Monday night. A native of Jasper County, he was the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Tim Hawthorne of Roganville.

Surviving are his widow, Mittie Ge. Hawthorne of Roganville; four daughters, Mrs. Alice Spillers of Sour Lake, Mrs. Olinie Beaver of Beaumont, Mrs. Zelma Morgan of Kirbyville and Elsie Hawthorne of Roganville; eight sons Edward Hawthorne, S.C. Hawthorne, Eston Hawthorne, Arthur Hawthorne and Jack Hawthorne of Roganville, Elliott Hawthorne and Harvey Hawthorne of Beaumont, Guy Hawthorne of Segarville; six sisters Mrs. Lulu West and Mrs. Ola Jone of Kirbyville, Mrs. Lizzie Hooks of Bleakwood, Mrs. Hattie Martin of Houston, Mrs. Leachie Day of Newton and Mrs. Martha Norberg of Ashland, Ore; seven brothers, F.P Hawthorne, J.C. Stringer Funeral Home of Kirbyville. Hawthorne died at 12:30 p.m. Friday in Schlesinger Geriatric Center in Beaumont. He was a lifelong resident of Roganville and a retired farmer. Zora Hawthorne will be honored for his 100th birthday at a reunion Saturday, July 31, at the Hen House Ridge Pavillion at Martin Dies Jr State Park near Dam B.

Hawthorne was born July 30, 1899, to Tim and Mary Hawthorne of Roganville, a small sawmill town 11 miles south of Jasper. Hawthorne was the youngest of 14 children.

Until grown, Hawthorne worked on the family farm which was by the Santa Fe railroad tracks and could tell which train was coming through just by the whistle.

Growing up listening to those whistles gave him the desire to work on the railroad. At age 21, he went to work on a switch engine in Roganville during the winter and continued to work on the farm during the summer months.

In 1928, Hawthrone went to work for Kirby Lumber Company at Camp 11 near Silsbee.

During the Depression, he farmed until 1937 when he went back to work for Kirby until 1941.

World War II began while he worked for Livingston shipyard in Orange where he was employed until 1942 when his dream of riding the rails was realized as he went to work for Kansas City Southern (K.C.S.) where he remained employed for 30 years until retirement at age 70.

In 1996, Hawthorne lost his wife of 73 years, Mae Fairchild Hawthorne.

He now shares his life with the remainder of his family which includes daughter Mary Lou King and husband Larry of Broaddus and daughter Doris Jean Ostraner of The Woodlands.

Hawthorne is grandfather to six, great grandfather to 17 and great-great grandfather to three.

Zora "Zeke" Hawthorne, 100, of Broaddus died Monday, July 10, 2000, at Colonial Pines Health Care Center in San Augustine. Hawthorne was a native of Roganville and had formerly lived in Pt. Arthur 59 years.He was a retired engineer with Kansas City Southern. Survivors: daughters, Mary Lou H. King of Broaddus and Doris Ostrander of The Woodlands; six grandchildren; 17 great grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren. Funeral services were held July 12 at Friendship Church near Roganville, interment followed at Friendship Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the National Multiple Sclerosis Society; 2990 Richmond Ave, Ste 118; Houston, TX 77098-3196. Levingston Funeral Home of Groves, directors.

When he registered for the draft during World War I, he listed his occupation as Farmer in Bon Wier, Texas. His nearest relative was shown as J. W. Powell of Merryville, Louisiana, his father. He was described as of Medium Heighth, Slender, with blue eyes and dark hair. On his registration for the World War II draft, he was still farming in Newton County, His place of birth was shown as Lees Mill versus Bon Wier. When asked for a name and address of a person who would always know his address, his answer was W. A. Newton.

His Texas Death Certificate lists him as a retired farmer, and a Widower. He had not served in the U.S. Armed Forces. At the time of his death, he lived at 3141 Proctor Street, Port Arthur, Texas. Informant on the death certificate was Carroll Powell, his oldest half brother.

A daughter of a daughter a Ida Jones, who would be a direct female descendant of Mary, the wife of Daniel Morgan, served as an mtDNA donor to determine if Mary was indeed native american, as had been widely rumored. The mtDNA proved to be HV, or Helena, a primarily European haplogroup, most prevalent in Western Europe. The single difference from the Cambridge Reference Sequence was CRS 16311 C. The HV results preclude Native American ancestry on the matrilineal track -- the haplogroup would have to be A, B, C, D or a variety of X to show matrilineal ancestry as Native American. Therefore it appears that Mary Morgan's mother WAS NOT a full blooded Native American. It is still possible, however, she had native american ancestors, but if so it was not through her direct maternal line.
