Funeral Services For P. M. Coussons Held Saturday

Pole Mason Coussons, 75, died Thursday at 6:30 p.m. in Baptist Hospital, Beaumont, after a lengthy llness. Mr. Coussons was a retired banker. Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. Saturday in the First Baptist Church Hemphill. The Rev. Clarence Howell officiated. Burial was in the Hemphill Cemetery under the direction of Starr Funeral Home of Hemphill. Survivors are his widow, Mrs. Carrie Coussons of Hemphill; two daughters, Miss Joy Coussons of Hemphill and Mrs. Evon Leediker of Cleveland, Texas; two sons, T. Coussons of Alto and Bobby Coussons of Hemphill; one sister, Mrs. Fannie Pou of Tenaha; one brother, Goodrich Coussons of Hemphill, and six grandchildren.
Pall bearers were Horace Pratt, Abb Howard, V. A. Jones Sr., Deas Fuller, E. T. Killion, C. C. Rice and James Fuller.

W. E. Coussons, Prominent Local Citizen, Dies

William Ersel Coussons, 62, of Hemphill, died Friday at 6:15 a.m. in his home of a heart attack, while preparing to go to work. This was his second heart attack. He had one five weeks ago. He had returned to working part time at his store a week ago last Monday. Mr. Coussons was a native of Hemphill and was a prominent merchant and businessman. He owned and operated the W. E. Coussons store in Hemphill since 1929, in addition to other real property. He was, at the time of his death, a director of the First State Bank of Hemphill. A veteran of World War I, her served overseas and was in France when the Armistice was declared. Mr. Coussons was a member of the Sabine Post 197, American Legion. He had also served as a Hemphill city councilman from 1940 to 1952; as a member of the draft board, and as a trustee of the Hemphill Independent School District. He was a member of the Little Fowler Masonic Lodge. Funeral serviced were held at 3 p.m. Sunday in the Starr Funeral Home Chapel, with the Rev. Lovis Dunn, pastor of the East Mayfield Baptist Church officiating, assisted by the Rev. Clarence Howell, pastor of the first Baptist Church of Hemphill and the Rev. C. A. Bly. Burial was in the Hemphill Cemetery under the direction of Starr Funeral Home of Hemphill. Survivors include his widow, Mrs. Novie Pratt Coussons; three daughters, Mrs. Dan Williams of Hemphill, Mrs. Joe Neal of San Augustine, and Russell Duke of Indiana, Pa; three sons, Dr. Charles Coussons of Nacogdoches, Sammy Coussons of Hemphill and Paul Coussons of Houston; three sisters, Mrs. Dalton Smith of Hemphill, Mrs. John Bowers and Mrs. Vincent Kickerillo, both of Houston; two brothers, L. A. Coussons of Blythe, Calif., and Luman Coussons and 16 grandchildren.

Bessie Lou Coussons Neal

Funeral services for Bessie Lou Coussons Neal, 75, of San Augustine were held at 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, February 15, 2006 at First Baptist Church in San Augustine. Burial followed in the Chumley Cemetery in San Augustine County. Bro. Mike BELGRAD and Bro. Buddy PRATT officiated. She was a retired school teacher and a member of White Rock Baptist Church. She is survived by her daughters, Josette Neal NEWBERRY of Austin, Sue Neal BENTON and husband, Kevin, of Nacogdoches, and Carol Neal CARTWRIGHT of San Augustine, son Pete GARRETT; sister, Peggy DUKE of Hemphill, brother, Sammy COUSSONS and wife, Louise, of Nacogdoches; sisters-in-law, Lorraine COUSSONS of Nacogdoches and Freddie COUSSONS of Houston; and seven grandchildren. Obituary

Peggy Ann Coussons Duke, 85, of Hemphill, Texas passed away Sunday, November 28, 2021 at her residence.

Peggy was born July 11, 1936 in Hemphill to Ersel and Novie Ada Pratt Coussons. She was a lifelong resident of Sabine County and a graduate of the Hemphill High School Class of 1954. She worked as a nurse's assistant for many years and was active in the First Baptist Church, including vacation bible school. She loved to work with the elderly. Peggy had a green thumb and was best known for the ferns on her front porch and she believed in the phrase "Gift of Hospitality, unconditional love and nurturing".

She was preceded in death by her husband, Russell E. Duke and daughter, Myra Duke Clindaniel.

She is survived by her daughters, Cindy Duke Cobia of Austin and Megan Russek and husband, Eric, of League City; sister-in-law, Lorraine Coussons of Nacogdoches; grandchildren, Cara Westbrook, Jacie Cobia, Ricky Cobia and wife, Courtney, Madalyn Russek, Josh Russek and Hannah Russek; and great grandchild, Alex Freeman.

Graveside services will begin at 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, November 30, 2021 in Hemphill Cemetery under the direction of Starr Funeral Home with Bro. Floyd Wright officiating.

OBITUARY

Shirley Ann Williams, 88, of Hemphill, Texas passed away on Wednesday, January 31, 2024 at Legacies Nursing Home in Hemphill, Texas.

Shirley was born on March 22, 1935 in Hemphill, Texas to Dalton Paul "Shine" Smith and Lemmie Cousins Smith. She worked at First State Bank in Hemphill, Texas for over 30 years. She enjoyed watching Gunsmoke and dancing.

She is survived by her son, Randy Williams and wife, Jan of Mont Belvieu, Texas; brothers, Paul Smith and wife, Shirley of San Augustine, Texas, Phillip Smith and wife, Pauline of Hemphill, Texas, and Mike Smith and wife Jonette of Hemphill, Texas; sisters, Tanya Walker and husband, Buckshot of Hemphill, and Sissy Smith of Nacogdoches; grandchildren, Jennifer Ferguson and husband, Jody, Jason Williams and wife, Leah, Krystal Fuller and husband, Cole, Christy Tyer and husband, Mike, and Jennifer Foster and husband, Jay; 11 great grandchildren and one great-great grandchild.

Shirley was preceded in death by her parents, Shine and Lemmie Smith; son, Lamar Williams; brothers, Ricky Smith and Jimmy Dale Smith; and sister, Dorothy McClemore.

Jimmy Dale Smith, 68, of Hemphill died at 9:45 a.m. at a Jasper hospital. Smith was born Jan. 19, 1939, in Hemphill as a son of the late Lemmie (Coussons) and Dalton Smith. He was a lifelong area resident. Survivors: brothers, Paul Smith of San Augustine, and Philip Smith, Ricky Smith, and Michael Smith, all of Hemphill; and sisters, Shirley WILLIAMS and Dot McLEMORE, both of Beaumont, and Frances NEWMAN and Tanya WALKER, both of Hemphill. Graveside rites were held at 4 p.m. Saturday at the Hemphill City Cemetery. Services were under the direction of Starr Funeral Home Inc. in Hemphill.

Ricky George Smith, 68, of Hemphill, Texas, passed away Tuesday, August 7, 2018 at Hospice in the Pines in Lufkin, Texas.

Ricky George was born May 17, 1950 in Hemphill, Texas to Dalton "Shine" Smith and Lemmie Coussons Smith. He was a lifelong resident of Sabine County and he worked as a concrete finisher for East Texas Concrete Foundations. He was a member of First United Methodist Church in Hemphill.

He is survived by his daughter, Rhiannon Smith, of Houston, Texas; brothers, Paul Smith and wife, Shirley, of San Augustine, Texas, Philip Smith and wife, Pauline, of Hemphill, Texas, and Michael Smith and wife, Johnette, also of Hemphill; sisters, Shirley Williams of Beaumont, Texas, Frances "Sissy" Smith of Missouri, and Tanya Walker and husband, Buckshot, of Hemphill; and grandchildren, Austin and Aislinn Lee.

He was proceeded in death by his parents, his brother, Jimmy Dale Smith, and his sister, Dot McLemore.

Visitation will be held from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Wednesday, August 8, 2018 at Starr Funeral Home, 510 Starr St., Hemphill, Texas.

Graveside services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, August 9, 2018 in Smith Family Cemetery, Boyd Road, Milam, Texas under the direction of Starr Funeral Home with Bro. Floyd Wright officiating.
