    Funeral for Melvin Ponder, 88, of San Augustine will be at 11 a.m. Thursday in Wyman Roberts Memorial Chapel, San Augustine, with Alton Shaw officiating. Burial will be in Antioch Cemetery, San Augustine County.

    Ponder died Nov. 3, 2003, in San Augustine.

    Born Nov. 21, 1914, in San Augustine County, he was the son of Berry Ponder and Lillie Epps. He had been a mechanic for WKM Machine Shop, and he was a U.S. Army veteran.

    Survivors include his wife, Ruby Ponder, of San Augustine; son, Michael Ponder of Missouri City; sisters, Opal Thompson and Winnie Nance, both of San Augustine; brothers, Charles Ponder and Frank Ponder, both of San Augustine; and four grandchildren.

    Opal Thompson, age 94, was born on April 30, 1919 in San Augustine County to Berry and Lillie (Epps) Ponder. She was a lifelong member of the Antioch Church of Christ.
    Opal was an avid singer and enjoyed sitting around in the evening playing the guitar and mandolin, singing with her extended family. She loved to go camping and fishing and she was a homemaker.

    She is survived by her sons, George Thompson and wife Francis of Beaumont, Dean Thompson and wife Barbara of Weatherford and Andy Thompson and wife Dru of Arlington; brother Charles Ponder of San Augustine; 9 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren and 3 great-great-grandchildren, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

    Opal was preceded in death by her parents; husband Omer (Buck) Thompson; sisters Mary Lee Wilkinson and Winnie Nance; brothers, Melvin, Jessie and Frank Ponder; son Oscar Charles Thompson.

    Funeral Services will be Wednesday, September 11, 2013, at 11:00 A.M., Wyman Roberts Memorial Chapel in San Augustine with Al Shaw officiating and burial to follow in the Antioch Cemetery.

    Visitation will be Tuesday evening from the hours of 5:00 P.M. - 8:00 P.M. at Wyman Roberts Funeral Home, 316 W. Columbia Street, San Augustine, Texas

    Winnie was born on August 22, 1923, to Lillie (Epps) Ponder and Barry Ponder in San Augustine County, Texas. She was a life-long member of the Antioch Church of Christ in San Augustine, County, Texas.

    Heavens choir got another beautiful alto voice. She was a gentle, sweet, loving and faithful woman. Her beliefs in the Bible, God, and her family never faulted. Winnie will be greatly missed by all who knew her, especially her family.

    Funeral Services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, September 8, 2012, in the Wyman Roberts Memorial Chapel, with Alton Shaw officiating. Interment will be in the Antioch Cemetery in San Augustine County. Visitation will be Friday evening, September 7, 2012, from the hours of 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. in the Wyman Roberts Funeral Home.

    She is survived by her husband of 68 years,James Nance of San Augustine; Sons; Frank Nance and Joann of San Augustine; Kenneth Nance of San Augustine; John Nance and Phyllis of Jefferson; Daughter: Wendy Looney and Andy of Jefferson; 12 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren, and 2 great-great grandchildren, along with numerous nieces and nephews/

    Charles Ponder, 91, of San Angelo, formerly of San Augustine, passed away Thursday, May 10 at Lyndale San Angelo, an assisted living facility.

    Services will be Saturday, May 19, 2018 at 10:00am at Wyman Roberts Funeral Home in San Augustine, TX. Family visitation will be Friday, May 18, 2018 from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.

    Charles was born on July 2,1926 to Berry and Lillie (Epps) Ponder. He was the youngest of seven children. A veteran of World War II, his last posting was at Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio. While San Antonio he met and married Luvera Roach. He was employed by Gulf Oil for thirty-two years in both San Antonio and Austin. Retiring in 1984, Charles and Luvera moved to his family home near San Augustine. He served as Board President of Bland Lake Rural Water (now San Augustine Rural Water) and served as Secretary/Treasurer of Antioch Cemetery. He loved to read the Bible, sing, garden, play 42, and walk in the woods. In addition, Charles was also a member of the San Augustine Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 9313.

    Charles was a member of the Church of Christ and served as an elder at congregations in San Antonio and Austin. After moving back to Bland Lake, he was a member of Antioch Church of Christ.

    Charles is survived by two daughters, Glenda Kinney and husband Kendall of Sweetwater, TX and Rebecca Mahon and husband Monte of San Angelo, TX; one son, Roy Ponder and wife Gina of San Angelo, TX; grandchildren, Jennie Monroe and husband Ben of Sweetwater, TX; Robin Smith and husband Ryan of San Angelo, TX; Wade Mahon and wife Kaci of Keller, TX; Ryan Mahon of Midland, TX; Chad Mahon of San Angelo, TX; Julie Hamil and husband Reed of San Angelo, TX; Gregory Ponder of Perryton, TX; and Kayla Ponder of San Angelo, TX; Four great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

    Frank was born January 2, 1946, in San Augustine, Texas, to parents Winnie (Ponder) Nance and James A. Nance. After High School, he proudly served in the United States Army. After the military, he retired from Aerospace Engineering and then moved back to his beloved hometown of San Augustine with his beloved wife of 22 years Joann. He was an active member of the V.F.W. Post #9313, where he had served as Past Commander, and was a member of the Redland Masonic Lodge #3 in San Augustine. He was affiliated with the Antioch Church of Christ in San Augustine County, Texas.

    Those who are left to cherish his memory include his wife, Joann Nance of San Augustine; children, Amy Ivy and Tim of Azle, Texas, Theresa Sloan of N. Richland Hills, Texas, and Sean McCullough and Eva if Ft. Worth, Texas; brother, Johnny Nance and Phyllis; sister, Wendy Nance and Gordon Vaughn, along with 8 grandchildren, and 12 great-grandchildren.

    He was preceded in death by his parents, Winnie and James A. Nance; son, Scotty Nance; daughter, Vannita Mayberry; brothers, Chuck Nance and Kenneth Nance.

    Pallbearers: Ty McCoy, Cody McCoy, Casey Nance, Casey Allen Nance, Brandon Sloan, Chris McCullough, Sean McCullough and Jody Nance.

    Funeral Services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, November 5, 2021, in the Wyman Roberts Memorial Chapel, located at 316 West Columbia Street in San Augustine. Officiating will be Jeff Boyd with interment following in the Antioch Cemetery in San Augustine County, Texas.

    Visitation will be Thursday evening, November 4, 2021, from the hours of 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Wyman Roberts Memorial Chapel in San Augustine.

    Barry Charles "Chuck" Nance was born in Grand Saline, Texas, on April 15, 1947, to James and Winnie (Ponder) Nance. He entered into rest in San Augustine, Texas, on August 1, 2010, attaining the age of 63 years, 3 months and 17 days.

    Chuck was a member of Antioch Church of Christ. During the Vietnam war he served in the U.S. Coast Guard. He was a member of V.F.W. Post #9313 in San Augustine and the American Motorcyclist Association.

    Memorial Services will be held on Saturday, August 7, 2010, at 10:00 a.m. in the Antioch Church of Christ in San Augustine County. Officiating will be Alton Shaw and Darwin Roraback.

    Kenneth was born to Winnie (Ponder) Nance and James Alfred Nance on September 28, 1948, in San Augustine County, Texas. He served in Vietnam in the 11th Armored Calvary Regiment, and was a member of the Black-horse Society. He was employed as a Brick Mason working in Construction. He was a member of the Church of Christ.

    He is survived by daughter, Kelley Downey of San Antonio; Sons, Jody Nance of San Augustine and Casey Nance and his wife, Kelly of San Augustine; Brothers, Frank Nance and his wife, Joann of San Augustine; Johnny Nance and his wife, Phyllis of Jefferson; Sister, Wendy Looney of Jefferson; His grandchildren, Kendra Downey; Madeline Jolene Nance; Casey Nance, Jr., and Brittan Nance.

    He is preceded in death by his parents, James and Winnie Nance; Brother, Barry Charles Nance and nephew, Scotty Nance.

    Pallbearers will include, Jody Nance, Casey Nance, Frank Nance, Dean Thompson, Ken Nance, and Johnny Nance.

    Funeral Services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, July 1, 2016, in the Wyman Roberts Memorial Chapel, with interment following in the Antioch Cemetery in San Augustine County. Visitation will be Thursday evening. June 30, 2016, from the hours of 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Wyman Roberts Funeral Home, 316 West Columbia Street, San Augustine County, Texas 75972.

    The family has requested that in lieu of flowers that donations be made to the San Augustine Community Athletic Association in Kenneth's Memory. He was very passionate about the future of our youth in the community, and took great pride and care in the facilities.
