The book "Meriwether County, Georgia Cemeteries" compiled and photographed by Priscilla Turner, pg. 42 has the following Fuller graves listed: Fuller, James A. d 26 Oct 1853; Fuller, Seborn T. d 8 Oct 1853 Aged 17 yrs; Fuller, Margaret J. d 8 May 1845 Aged 6 yrs old; One unmarked child; One unmarked granite marker. Located in the Second District on LL 224 on Moreland-Gill Road in a pasture across the road from Lois Argroves home. The cemetery is grown up in briars, but the wrought-iron fence is still intact with gate. Read by Robbie Strickland, Audrey Strickland, and Priscilla Turner.

Linda Fuller of Cleveland, Texas shared the following email that she received from John Beattie Fuller with me:

"I understand your interest in connecting James Anderson FULLER directly to the Ezekiel FULLER, Isle of Wight Co VA, family line. I have not been able to yet establish his father's identity. From the data that we do have we can make some guesses about John Anderson. We do know that he married Fanny BAILEY on 28 Dec 1818 in Warren Co GA. In that Warren county lies in the eastern part of GA and very near Columbia, Richmond, and Wilkes Cos. we do know the FULLER families that first settled in these GA Cos. There is not only one New England FULLER family. One of whom was John Fuller, son of Ezekiel, as well as John FULLER, Jr. Grandson of Ezekiel, along with a couple of other sons of John Sr. One proven and one not proven. So we can say that probably James Anderson was either from the New England line of Elijah or VA line of Ezekiel with some degree of probability.

In that most of the FULLER's identified in Meriwether Co GA were from Ezekiel's line by 1850 while Elijah's line went to Greene Co GA and then on to Perry Co AL. one could assume that James Anderson must have been of Ezekiel's line for that apparently is where he died in 1853. I would guess the reason for the Warren Co GA marriage is based upon Fanny BAILEY's home of residence at the time and that James Anderson resided in one of the adjoining GA counties.

Something else that is quite interesting to note within James Anderson's family line. That is, a son named William Alexander FULLER. Not an altogether odd given name, but this is exactly the same given name that appears in John FULLER, son of Ezekiel, family line. Oh by he way, in the event that you do not already know, Ezekiel's son, John srved during the Amer Rev while he was over 60 years of age and his on, John Jr. also served in the Amer Rev. John Sr. lived to be 106 and his son Jr. over 98 years old.

Overlooking John Fuller Sr. for the moment, let's look at John Jr's Sheet. I see he has a son James born about 1795 in Columbia ? GA who married a Nancy BAILEY in GA about 1820. These dates, I must add, are based upon each's possible age and it is for that reason we have the "ca" noted. The seventh child of this family is a William Alexander FULLER b. 17 Feb 1810 Columbia Co GA, who would be a younger brother to James.

Now looking at James Anderson FULLER's FGS I have him born in 1790 (data from census no doubt) in Warren Co ? GA (because of marriage data no doubt). His marriage to Fanny BAILEY 28 Dec 1818 in Warren Co GA is a matter of record. His second child is a William Alexander Fuller born 1826 Meriwether Co GA. Could he have named his son after his own younger brother? I think so. Within his notes I see that he was living in Dekalb Co GA at the time of his 1827 GA Land Lottery entry. Interestingly, John FULLER Jr. was also within the same area where he remained. Why did James Anderson leave the area where his father's family resided? Because of James' Meriwether Co GA land lottery? It was not soley because he had so many FULLER relatives there later, for some of them had not yet arrived in that GA county from SC."

He goes on to state that although he has no proof, he strongly suspects that James Anderson FULLER's father was John Fuller Jr., grandson of Ezekiel FULLER of Isle of Wight Co. VA.

    Notes:

John Fuller and his wife, Mary, were both born in Georgia, as were their two oldest sons, James and John. They moved to Arkansas sometime before 1860, and can be found on the 1860 Columbia County census (P#435, Dwelling 321, Family 323). John is shown as a Farmer, owning $1,200 in real estate and $550 in personal property.

In the book "Sabine County Historical Sketches and Genealogical Records" by Edna McDaniel White and Blanche Finley Toole, there is a picture of John and Mary Fuller. John is shown in uniform, with a long rifle. Private John B. Fuller is shown as a member of the 26th Arkansas Infantry, Capt. Hamiter's Company G. He enlisted on May 22, 1862 in Lewisville, Arkansas for a period of 3 years. The muster roll's show him present through April 30, 1863. In June, 1863, he was inexplicably dropped from the roll by order of Lt. Genl Holmes. However, he was shown as present on the muster rolls for December 31, 1863 through February 29, 1864. His name appears on a ROLL OF PRISONERS OF WAR of furloughed and detailed men, Confederate States Army, surrendered at New Orleans, LA, by General E.K. Smith, CSA to Maj. Gen. R.S. Canby, USA, May 26, 1865 and paroled at Shreveport, LA June 20, 1865. The roll was dated Shreveport, LA, June 20, 1865. His residence was shown as Columbia County, Arkansas.

Organized as Morgan's Battalion on June 14, 1862, it was increased to a full regiment and reorganized as the 26th Arkansas Infantry on July 23, 1862, at DeValls Bluff, Arkansas. Asa Stokely Morgan, formerly of the famed 1st Arkansas Infantry Regiment, was appointed as lieutenant-colonel of the battalion, and was promoted to colonel when the 26th Arkansas was organized. The regiment was assigned to McRae's Brigade, Shoup's Division, First Corps, Army of the Trans-Mississippi, and fought at Prairie Grove and Devil's Backbone. Later, the regiment took part in the Red River Campaign, fighting at Pleasant Hill, Louisiana, on April 9, 1864. The 26th Arkansas was then ordered back to Arkansas to counter Union General Steele's Camden Expedition, culminating in the battle of Jenkins' Ferry on April 30, 1864. The regiment remained in south Arkansas for the next year, and was included in the general surrender of the Confederate forces in the Trans-Mississippi Department on May 26, 1865

The family moved to Sabine County, Texas shortly after the birth of their youngest son in Malvern, Arkansas in 1869. Linda Fuller of Cleveland, Texs located a deed dated 18 January 1870, showing the purchase of 174 acres of land lying in Sabine County out of the 611 acre survey made for William J. Sneed off the William Isaac's League. The witnesses to the deed were W.H. Crouch and S.D. Berley. It was recorded in San Augustine County. The price was one dollar an acre, for a total of $174. John died less than six weeks after this purchase, on March 6, 1870.

Mary herself died in 1874, leaving her children orphaned. The eldest sons, James and John, ages 18 and 17, took charge of the family. On the 1880 census, John is shown as head of household. Also living with him and three of his younger siblings is 50 year old Nancy Howard, listed as a family member. His older brother, James, was shown as living on a nearby farm with his wife, mother in law and year old daughter. Brother Delony was also living nearby, working as a laborer on the farm of Christopher "Kit" and Mary Smith. Kit Smith was later killed by the Conner's in the infamous Smith-Conner-Low feud in the mid 1880s in Sabine County.

Blanche Finley Toole of Sabine County writes that Nancy Howard, the family member shown living in the John W Fuller household in 1880, was related her great great grandmother, Ruth Howard Finley. Her father was Samuel Howard. She came to Texas around 1875. Nancy Howard's fiancee was killed in the Civil War, and she never married. She was buried with her pictures of him and her bible. Ms. Toole says that Nancy Howard can be found on the 1850 Meriwether GA census in Household #799, Nancy Howard, age 23, female, born Georgia, in the household of Malichi Murphy age 48, born South Carolina and wife Nancy, age 52 b. South Carolina. (Letter to Melinda Strong, date 5 June 1997).

The parentage of John Brooks Fuller has not yet been proved conclusively. It is appears that he is the son of James Anderson Fuller, however there are some inconsistencies. The family of James Anderson Fuller resided in Meriwether County, Georgia, as did Nancy Howard. As indicated on the census records extracted above, John Brooks Fuller was born circa 1834 in Georgia. The census records of the James Anderson Fuller family indicate that their son, John B., was born in Georgia circa 1831. From the ages of their children, it appears that John and Mary Fuller were probably married sometime before 1855 in Georgia. This fits with the information from the Fuller Genealogical Bank, showing that James's son John B. Fuller married a Mary Watson on November 5, 1852. This also fits with the facts shown on the death certificates for two of the Fuller's children, Joseph Thomas Fuller and Francis Ola Fuller Burkhalter. Both certificates show their mother's maiden name as Watson. However, in the book SABINE COUNTY HISTORICAL SKETCHES AND GENEALOGICAL RECORDS, the mother of the Fuller Children is listed as Mary Brown. No support is provided for the Brown name, however. The most important contradiction, one that must be resolved, is that the Fuller Genealogical Data Banks show that John B. Fuller died on November 5, 1862 (probably during the Civil War). Our John Brooks Fuller did not die until early in 1870, in Sabine County.

Only a death date is shown on his headstone. He shares a double marker with Mary Fuller. This is also engraved with "Precious Memories."

Owner of the Hemphill Drug Company, which was underneath the Medical offices of Dr. W.T. Arnold, and next to the Fuller Barber shop, both cousins. In an article dated January 1, 1997 from the SABINE COUNTY REPORTER about the grand opening of Hemphill Drug Company by it's new owners, it is noted that this grand opening included "Leon and Pansy Adickes, also former owners of Hemphill Drug, which was founded in 1912 by Tom (sic) Fuller, father of Mrs. Adickes."

In his 2002 book, THE MYSTERY OF LADY BOUNTIFUL, Bob Bowman writes that a $5,000 bond was posted for Lillian Knox, accuses of murdering her husband, timber magnate Hiram Knox. The bond was singed by five Hemphill men, including Dr. Tom ARNOLD, a witness for the prosecution. The other four were E. P PADGETT, a lawyer; J.P. (sic) FULLER, who owned a drug store; L.E. PRATT, a merchant; and John W. MINTON, attorney for the Knox family. Another press report listed S.R. Williams as surety. (Bowman, p. 105).

    Notes:

In the books "Old Timers of Sabine County, Texas Vignettes of Pioneer Families" by Virgie Speights (S. Malone, 1983), the following vignette appears:

Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Graydon (Tom) Fuller celebrated their golden wedding anniversary, Sunday, February 20, 1966, at their home with an open house from 2 to 4 p.m.. Hostesses were their daughter-in-law, Mrs. Deas Fuller, their niece, Mrs. L.A. Adiches, and Miss Gertrude Sanders.

Mrs. J.O. Porter, Miss Sherry Lewis, Miss Amanda Gooch and Miss Nancy McClelland served golden iced wedding cakd and gold punch and conducted guests through the gift display rooms. Their grandson, Tommy Fuller, registered the guests as they arrived.

When Thomas Graydon Fuller, son of James Estern (sic) and Hannah Pickney Deweese Fuller, and Miss Sallie Mason, daughter of William Crockett and Josephine Deas Mason, of San Augustine, were married at the home of the bride's parents they moved into the house where Tom was born and lived all of his life. He has been in business in Hemphill for forty years.

The Fullers have one son, Thomas Deas Fuller, who is in business with his father and lives across the street from his parents, in a home once owned by Dr. and Mrs. W.T. Arnold and family. Mrs. Arnold was formerly Miss Pearl Fuller, sister of Tom.

There is one grandson, Tommy Fuller of Hemphill, and one granddaughter, Mrs. Martha Turner of Austin.

According to "A Pictorial History of Sabine County, Texas", the home of Tom and Sally Mason Fuller was believed to have been built during the 1870's by Allen Beckcom.

In her weekly Sabine County Reporter column, "On the Bright Side", Mary Howell wrote that she remembered "Tom ran a clothing and feed store next to the drug store [which his brother Jim Fuller owned and operated]....Deas kept the store open after his parents deaths." (Page 4, July 18, 2007).

He was survived by his (second) wife, Jeannette Wright Fuller, his daughter Mrs. Lexie Smith of Akron, Ohio, his granddaughter, two brothers Joe and Hermann Fuller both of the Rosevine Community, four sisters Mrs. Nina McLemore of San Augustine, Mrs. Ethly (sic) Eddings of Rosevine, Mrs. Bertha Fuller (sic) of Conroe and Mrs. Tera Coussons (sic) of Carthage. His funeral services were held 2:30 pm Thursday, December 21 in the First Baptist Church in Hemphill. The Reverend Clarence Howell, pastor of the First Baptist Church in Boling, Texas, and the Rev. Tommy Long, pastor of the Newton Church of God, officiated. He was buried in Hemphill cemetery under the direction of Starr Funeral Home. Pallbearers were Leon Adickes, Lon Wright, Oscar Pate, Dan Prado, Joe Howard and Louis McDonald."
According to "A Pictorial History of Sabine County, Texas", Mrs. Alonzo Fuller was a fifth grade teacher at Hemphill in 1941. Per William Kent Anderson, she was a graduate of Stephen F. Austin University. This book instead shows Lonzo's name as Lonzo Alcony Fuller. On one census for Sabine County, he was shown as "Lawrence A" instead of Alonzo. This Federal Census also had the number "2" in the column for U-C Vet. Army/Navy.

  27. 42.  Nina Ophelia FullerNina Ophelia Fuller Descendancy chart to this point (15.Joseph3, 5.John2, 1.James1) was born on 15 Sep 1891 in Rosevine, Sabine County, Texas; died on 8 Jul 1980 in Lufkin, Angelina County, Texas; was buried in Rosevine Cemetery, Rosevine, Sabine County, Texas.

    Notes:

Nina Fuller was a striking. She was nearly six feet tall and slender. When she unwound her hair from the bun she usually wore, it cascaded down her back almost to her feet. She enjoyed gardening and quilting, growing most of her own vegetables. She was a thrifty woman. She continued to make her own soap from lye, pine rosin and "fat cracklings" even when she could just as easily purchased a bar at the store.

Being the oldest daughter, Nina helped her mother daily with the household chores. She remembers that when she was quite young, her parents went to the State Fair in Dallas by horse and buggy. They came home with a washboard and a box of packaged laundry soap. Nina claims they were the first family in Sabine County to have a washboard, and remembers neighbors coming by on wash day just to see how it worked. The 1940 census indicates she had attended school for six years.

She was a staunch member of the Rosevine Church of God. She truly believed in doing good works, and never turned away anyone in need. Her son Tom remembers that their home was on the "hobo circuit" during the depression. He often passed men asleep on a spare mattress in their garage on his way to school. She fed everyone who came to their door hungry, and made regular visits to the local nursing home to take food to friends and relatives.

Nina Sue Wade, who was a backdoor neighbor to the McLemore family when they lived in town, recalls that her mother relied on her more experienced neighbors parenting advice. The Wade family had several young children, mainly very active boys, with Nina being the oldest. Mrs. Wade worked hard to keep her rambuctious children in line, to no avail. Mrs. McLemore advised her to ignore the minor infractions. Nina Sue recalled her mother often quoting a saying Mrs. McLemore told her, "When your children are young, they step on your shoestrings. When they get older, they step on your heartstrings." She would go on to advise her to cherish her children while they were young and full of spirit, because she would miss them sorely when they were grown and on their own.

Nina McLemore was an independant woman, living alone in a house her brother Lonzo built for her after her husband died. She lived next door to her son Percy, and her grandson's Dental Office was directly behind her home. She was able to live at home and care for herself until she was in her mid 80's, when she went to live with her daughter Evon.

    Notes:

Nina Fuller had an oval, concave portrait drawn of Price, probably from a photo taken of him before his death. She left the portrait to her daughter, Evon. Evon gave the portrait to niece Melinda McLemore Strong, who had it reframed.

  29. 44.  Brooks John FullerBrooks John Fuller Descendancy chart to this point (15.Joseph3, 5.John2, 1.James1) was born on 1 Mar 1895 in Rosevine, Sabine County, Texas; died on 31 Dec 1918 in Sabine County, Texas.

    Notes:

Although Brooks was said to have died of tuberculosis, he might actually have died in the great Spanish influenza epidemic of 1918. The disease maneuvered its way into the United States by soldiers, nurses and volunteers, viral carriers returning home from contagious flu infested combat zones. On October 31, 1918, the headlines in neighboring Jasper County, Texas read, "Flu Epidemic Raging the Globe--Over 20 Million Deaths Expected--Anti Influenza Vaccines Fail." The epidemic peaked in East Texas during the icy winter of 1918. (Source: Dony Harrison, Jasper NewsBoy January 20, 1999). No death certificate is on file for Brooks or his brother Price, who both died as young men.

    Notes:

Melinda McLemore remembers visiting her Grandaunt, the widowed Ethel Eddings, when she was a young girl. Even something as ordinary as taking a walk with her grandmother Nina and Aunt Ethel became an exciting adventure. Ethel carried her shotgun with her, constantly on the lookout for those "polecats (skunks) and armadillos" that wreaked havoc on her gardens.

Ethel married Grover David Eddings on 31 Oct 1915 in Sabine County, Texas. Grover (son of Sterling W. Eddings and Lyda E. Hutto) was born about 1889 in Texas; died on 15 Feb 1965 in Sabine County, Texas. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

    Notes:

Herman suffered from tuberculosis, and spent some time at a hospital in San Angelo when his children were still young. His wife and their eldest children, ranging in age from 14 to 10 had to bring in the crops while Herman was hospitalized. James Roland Fuller recounted that "what kept us going beyond our own best efforts was the help and encouragement of the good people of the county, especially their friends and neighbors in Rosevine, who came to help work the crops. Many of them pledged one days work each week, as needed, even while busy with their own crops. With their help and the grace of God we were able to survive."

When Herman returned, he was not able to farm. He traded his animals and equipment to a local store owner as a down payment on the store. He also was hired by the Rosevine school district to pick up and deliver students to the school. Ruth also helped at the store. As the years passed, Herman regained enough strength to operate stores and service stations throughout east and southest Texas.
