Notes:

In THE PAYNES OF VIRGINIA by Brooke Payne, it is noted that she is the daughter of "Silas Marshall of Lagrange, Mo." This is not correct, Silas is actually her brother.

Following marriage in about 1844, the young couple were living next door to Martha's parents in Lewis Co., Missouri.

Fay Payne Yeager found the family on the 1850 census is Lewis County, Missouri.

Dorothy (known as Dotty Bob) Thompson has a Marshall family bible that may have information in it.

Her tombstone in Marlow Cemetery gives her date of birth as 27 Mar 1827; that is exactly one year after what family records show as her her actual birthdate. It is possible that the tombstone is incorrect.

She was 74 at the time of her death, and had been living with her youngest son, Walter and his wife Gertrude at the time of the 1900 census, taken a few months prior to her death.

Martha married Thomas Hamilton Payne on 5 Aug 1843 in Clark County, Missouri. Thomas (son of William C. Payne and Sarah "Sally" Hamilton) was born on 27 Jan 1819 in Bourbon County, Kentucky; died on 14 Sep 1884 in Montague, Montague County, Texas; was buried in Sep 1884 in Montague Cemetery, Montague, Montague County, Texas. Sarah married John O'Neill on 18 Aug 1883 in Montague, Montague County, Texas. John (son of Patrick O'Neil and Annie McClosky) was born on 27 Aug 1845 in County Tyrone, Ireland; died on 14 Nov 1914 in Duncan, Stephens County, Oklahoma. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

Could she have been listed as Harriett C Payne 2 F Mo on the 1850 census, born ca 1848?

On a transcript of the 1860 Shelby County census, there is a 3 year old Catherine J Pain listed, which means she would have been born ca. 1857. According to the 1880 census, she was age 28, which means she would have been born closer to 1852. This would make her only 10 years younger than her husband, not 15. Is is likely that the 1860 listing for Catherine was actually for younger sister, Caladonia.

Catherine and her husband, Tom Joyner, are the first of her family to move to Texas. They arrive in Hardeman County in the spring of 1879. In a biography of her brother-in-law, John O'Neill, she was referenced as "Harriett Katherine, who now lived in Idaho...widow of the late Thomas Joiner, a farmer..."

Harriett married G. Thomas Joiner on 17 Nov 1869 in Shelby County, Missouri. G. was born on 25 Aug 1841 in Shelby County, Missouri; and died. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

Obituary of Samuel M. Payne

Born March 11, 1849 in Marion County, MO. Was married to Miss Olive McClanahan in August, 1873. To this union was born six children, two of whom are dead. His wife died five years ago. About six months ago he was united in marriage to Mrs. Hollingsworth of Duncan, Oklahoma. At this time he is survived by three sons, Marvin Payne of Chickasha, Frank Payne of Wichita Falls, Texas, and Aubrey Payne, Davidson, Okla., and one daughter, Mrs. H.P Haycraft of this city.

Mr. Payne was not a member of any church or lodge but he was a good man in every respect. He believed in good morals. He strictly believed in the "Golden Rule" "Do unto others as you would be done by." He believed in a supreme being and a higher power and universal salvation. He was a most devoted husband and father.

He was just a human being subject to the frailities of the flesh. If he made any mistakes we have forgotten them and if he has any accounting to make for the life he lived, he will make it to the Judge of all the earth who doeth all things well and will judge with justice and mercy.

The following biography of Samuel Marshall Payne was written by Ken Harvey:

Migrated to Texas on Texan Road (Hwy 69) with his parents and all his brothers and sisters after the Civil War, in abt. 1878. He would have been twenty-nine years old. Initially they all lived in a dugout.

In appearance he had a red beard and was of slender build. He had a weakness for fast horses which was perhaps encouraged by his contact with the Commanches out west. After all he needed speed to get away from them. He used to stride about the racecourse with tears in his eyes, such was his involvement in racing. He was quite an emotional man.

He cowboyed for many years in Texas and never considered that he worked for anyone in his life. It was a hard life. He and Ollie once found a man who had been skinned alive by the Indians while going somewhere with a wagon. He never knew if the victim was a whiteman or an Indian. They took him into town but he was dead on arrival.

On one occasion he found it necessary to hide in a plum thicket from Indians he had inadvertently come across. He stood there holding his horses nose to stop it whinnying. He was very fortunate with the wind direction as the scent of his mount was not carried to the Indian horses. The Indians would either have been in the area horse stealing or on the war path. It didn't really matter as the result for Samuel, if discovered, would probably have been the same.

1880 - His younger sister, L[ouise] C. Payne (b. 1863), stayed with his young family in Cooke County, Texas. She was "teaching school" at the time in 1880 according to the census.

1893 - While in living in Texas, Sam came to Oklahoma for the Land Run. He arrived for the opening of the Cherokee Strip in 1893. He came prepared with a wagon and team in order to ride with a lightweight racing saddle on his accompanying thoroughbred horse. He wore light boots and a cap with the bill turned backwards. He said he didn't want to look like a cowboy-he just wanted maximum speed. He found the land he wanted as he knew the area well from his droving days. He immediately placed his claim. After he got to the land office he sold the 160 acres he was now entitled to. The claim, which never had his name registered, was located near Enid and he was to say he made more money in that single transaction than he could have done in one whole year of being a cowboy.

In 1893 a Payne family group studio photograph was taken, probably in Quanah. It shows left to right; Samuel Marshall Payne (44) seated, Effie Mae (10) standing, C. Frank (18) seated, Aubrey Hamilton (16) standing rear, Samuel E. (14) standing forground, Marvin Walter (12) standing rear and Olivia McClanahan Payne (49) seated. Sam never grew any more. Lewis Payne has a copy of this photograph and the original is thought to have been with his sister Mary Olive and hence passed on to Dorothy Thompson. Another original is the property of Mary Ann Mounts Payne.

1895-He was the original entryman to 160 acres in Stephens County; the North-East quarter of section thirty-five in township two, [north of] range eight, west [of the Indian Meridian]. It is located about four miles outside Marlow. Sam and his family settled there, beside Hell Creek.

1900-The census shows the Sam Payne family living in Hardeman County, Texas.

1901-Samuel was described by his brother Walter W. Payne as the original entryman to 160 acres in Stephens County, Oklahoma. This land being the north-east quarter of Section thirty-five, township tow [Rock Creek, north of] Range eight (8) west [of the Indian Meridian. This farm was located about four miles outside Marlow]. This grant of land "was established and duly consumated" to Samuel M. Payne on 17 March 1920 by the signature of President Woodrow Wilson in line with the act to secure homesteads on the public domain.

1910 - Later Samuel purchased a farm about four miles outside Marlow, OK and in 1910 he was listed as living there in Rock Creek Township with his wife Ollie, his married son Marvin, his wife Grace and their child, his grandson, Chadwick. There were also two hired men and a cousin?, Lizzie Pictria (19), in the household. Ollie died in April of 1910 and Samuel became a widower.

1914-A sepia toned photograph is taken of Samuel in front of his house. The photograph includes (l to r) his son Marvin, Samuel, daughter Effie and her husband Hugh S. Haycraft.

In an Affidavit of Heirship of Samuel M. Payne who died intestate, Walter W. Payne stated that "...sometime during the year of 1915 he [Samue M. Payne] again married one Leona Hollingsworth." The couple are later listed as possessing one brown mare name Dolly, one sorrel mare names Bell and one whitefaced cow named Mott and her calf. "To this union no children were born and it is my understanding that she [Leona Hollingsworth] has given a deed of conveyance to any interest that she might have had in the estate of my deceased brother."

1916-Joe Payne of Knoxville records that Samuel died and was buried in Quanah, Texas. This is incorrect. Records from the Marlow Funeral Home instead indicate that he died at his residence in Marlow. His funeral was paid for by his son, Marvin Payne, a few months after the funeral.

He was buried in the Marlow Cemetery, Section 10, Block 10, Plot 5.

Kenneth Harvey states his full name was William Henry Harrison Payne, being named after the President. Throughout his life, however, he used the intials W.H., although Brooke Payne does record them as W.H.H.

William H. Payne. One of the strong personal factors in the upbuilding of the town of Marlow, has been William H. Payne, whose career has been closely connected with this section of the old Chickasaw Nation and Oklahoma for a quarter of a century. In the town itself, since it was started, he has shown ample confidence and has invested his capital in enterprises that further the welfare of the place. He was the first president of the Bank of Marlow, and is the principal factor in the recently organized Payne Lumber Company. He has also erected a business house and two dwellings in the town.

Mr. Payne's career has not been monotonous nor without interesting change from boyhood to the present. Born in Shelby county, Missouri, April 1, 1851, he grew up through boyhood with educational advantages that resulted from the primitive surroundings of that time and locality. After his sixteenth year he began hiring out for farm work, and turned most of his wages over to his parents, as was the old custom. He lived at home until he was about twenty-five, and then, with team and wagon, pioneered his way to Texas, crossing Red river at Delaware Bend and making his first stop at Loren's ranch in Cooke county. He rented some land of Loren and made a corn and cotton crop, but from 1879 on for several years he followed the cattle trail as a cowboy, and in this occupation first went over the ground in the vicinity of the present town of Duncan. After his marriage he located on a farm in Montague county, Texas, and began housekeeping with an extremely limited equipment. From Montague county he moved into the Chickasaw Nation, and at Velma built up his interests both as farmer and stockman. Five years later he brought his home and business to the vicinity of Marlow, where he has since remained. At this writing he still has a lease and runs some five hundred head of cattle, but it is his intention to close this part of his career and continue along quieter lines of activity. With the opening of the Comanche country Mr. Payne got a claim in what is now Tillman county, and while his family lived there to prove it up, he continued his stock business in the Indian Territory, and without neglecting business finally secured a patent to his land. In addition he has purchased some six hundred acres in the same vicinity, and eight or ten tenants are engaged in the improvement and labor of production on his large farm.

Mr. Payne's personal history connects him with the south. Though he was born in Missouri, his grandfather, William C. Payne, was a native of Loudoun county, Virginia, and had lived a time in Kentucky before moving the family to Missouri. The Paynes were established in Shelby county as early as 1833, and there the grandfather finished his life, passing away in 1865, at seventy-six. His wife was Sarah Hamilton, who also died in Missouri, and their children were: William, who died in Shelby county; Thomas H., father of the Marlow citizen above mentioned; Levi N., who died at Shelbyville, Missouri. Thomas H. Payne, living in a new country and without much assistance from home, gained his schooling in a log cabin and had only a small amount of the world's culture. He became a plain, honest citizen, and a man of worth wherever he lived. During the war he served with the militia in defense of the Union. The last years of his life were spent in Texas, where he died in 1882. He was an active man in the Democratic party. He married Martha Marshall, whose father, Sam M. Marshall, was a Virginian who had first moved to Kentucky and then to Missouri. Martha Payne died at Marlow, Oklahoma, in 1904, having reared a family of ten children, namely: Elizabeth, wife of John O'Neil, of Duncan; Kate, wife of Thomas Joyner, of Oklahoma; Samuel M., of Stephens county; William H., whose career has been sketched; Winfield, near Red Moon, Oklahoma; Levi N., of Wewoka, Oklahoma; Josephine, wife of L. F. McClannahan, of Duncan; Lula, wife of Allison Scott, of Duncan; Thomas B., who died at Duncan, leaving four children; and Walter W., of Duncan.

William H. Payne married, in 1882, Mrs. Hattie A. Long. Her parents were John B. Brown and Adaline Trowbridge, Vermont people, whose other children were: John B., of California; Irene, wife of H. M. Case; Hiram, who died at Velma, Oklahoma; Hale J., of Los Angeles, California; and Joseph R., of Montrose, Colorado. Mrs. Payne was born at Quincy, Illinois, July 28, 1859, and by her first marriage has a son, Ed. H. Long, of Fort Worth, who married Myrtle Payne and has a son, Willie Virgil. Mr. And Mrs. Payne have two children, Joseph R. and Lee B.

1910 - Living in Wall Township (Marlow area) of Stephens Co., Oklahoma in 1910. They had a house servant, Pearl Ice (20).

William H. Payne donated a plot of land for the Marlow cemetery. One section was reserved for the Paynes. This Payne section was not large enough and is now full.

Charles Strong found the following obituary at the Oklahoma State Archives:

14 December 1917 DUNCAN BANNER

"Died

News of the death of Uncle Bill Payne, which occurred at home in Marlow Tuesday, came as a shock to numerous friends in Duncan. Death came suddenly and unexpectedly, he being in comparatively good health up to the time of his death.

Mr. Payne was one of the pioneer citizens of this country. He was a man well liked by all, a successful ranchman and business man, and his death has occasioned universal sorrow. He was a brother of W.W. Payne of this city, besides has many other relatives throughout this section.

Funeral services were held Marlow Wednesday, many friends paying a last mark of respect to deceased."

An obituary, found by Lynell Gentry Cordell, was also published in the Marlow Review on Thursday, December 13, 1917.

W.H. Payne Passed Away Monday Even'g

In the passing of William H. Payne, Marlow loses one of her pioneer citizens, a man of sterling worth and unblemished character. Mr. Payne was identified with the financial and executive interest of Marlow for many years. He was regarded with high esteem by all who knew him, and most by those who knew him best. Large in body, mind and heart, he lived daily the life of clean morals and justice. He was remarkably free from the petty quarrels and smallness that mar so many lives. Born in Shelbyville, Shelby county, Missouri, April 1, 1851, he grew to early manhood in the atmosphere of Kentucky hospitality and courtesy that makes northwest Missouri famous. At the age of 21 years he was identified with the Christian church of that place and never discarded the great moral principle of that faith. In the early days he moved to the country at a time when law and life were matters of little concern. In spite of thse enviroments he lived the hardy life of the pioneers and reared his family and built his home that is a credit to the community and worth of his service.

After some illness, he passed away on the 10th day of December, 1917, at his home surrounded by his loved ones whos knew him best and realized the full measure of his loss to them. He lived to the ripe age of 66 years, 8 months, and 9 days and was laid to rest in the cemetery at Marlow, Oklahoma.

His wife and children receive the unstinted sympathy of the entire community in their hour of sorrow, and his presence is missed by all. He died like he lived, free from emnity and bitterness.

The funeral service was held in his home at 3 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 11, 1917, conducted by Elder E. L. Kirtley and his lifelong friends Dr. P. L. Montgomery, T. L. Rose (?), C. Smyth....(remaining names illegible).

William married Harriet "Hattie" Adaline Brown on 11 Aug 1883 in Montague, Montague County, Texas. Harriet (daughter of John Burns Brown and Adeline Regina Trowbridge) was born on 28 Jul 1859 in Quincy, Adams County, Illinois; died on 12 Jun 1956 in Marlow, Stephens County, Oklahoma; was buried on 14 Jun 1956 in Marlow Cemetery, Marlow, Stephens County, Oklahoma. Ken Harvey notes that "he was recorded on the 1870 Shelby County, Missouri census and shown as age 17, making his year of birth approximately 1853. He went by the name Scott, and was named after the Civil War General Winfield Scott.

In 1880, he was in Montague, Texas, with his wife and step-children.

A W. C. Payne was recorded, in Montague County Courthouse Marriage Book B, page 471, as marrying Nora Popejoy on 24 Nov. 1887. This could well be our Winfield Scott Payne. The initial "C." could be an error for "S." This ceremony was conducted by J. F. Shelton, Minister of the Gospel. If this is our Scott Payne, it would have been a second marriage. The 1900 census shows him as the father of two children born between 1876 and 1879. Their names are unknown. Lewis Payne vaguely recalled that Scott's wife was named Lou. Kenneth Harvey shows he remarried circa 1894 to Alice (Unknown), born circa 1852 in Texas.

Around 1889, the family moved North to Indian Territory. Scott's wife probably died soon therafter (deduced by Ken Harvey based on the 1900 I.T. census)."

In a biography of his brother, William Henry Harrison Payne, he was referenced as "Winfield, near Red Moon, Oklahoma." In another biography, this one of his brother-in-law, John O'Neill, he was referenced as "Winifred (sic), at Butler, Oklahoma."

In a biography of his brother-in-law, John O'Neill, he was referenced as "Newton, a farmer near Wewoka, Oklahoma."

When she was around six year old, ca 1918-1919, Roonie recalls going from her father's ranch to the big Payne farm, over the hill about 1/2 a mile away. When they arrived, Levi Newton Payne and his family were in two covered wagons starting a trip to Arizona. Her parents had gone to the farm to say their goodbyes. She remembered that one of the young children appeared to be retarded/disabled in some way. The family remained in Arizona, which is where Levi Newton died around 1932. (This story was told to Charles Strong by his mother around 1990).

In the copy of the Will of William H. Payne, he lists Levi as recieving $400. Levi was taught to read by his wife Lizzie, a school teacher. Levi Newton was in the 1889 run and got land near Oklahoma City, but traded it for a horse. (Source: Cova Jean Williams).

He died from acute angina pectoris on December 3, 1932. The informant was F.L. (Fred Lee) Payne. The undertaker was M.L. Gibbons. he was recorded as 76 years, 4 months and 1 day old. (From his death certificate filed in Arizona). A memorial stone was erected over his grave in 1988.

Not on Brooke Payne's list of the children of Thomas Hamilton Payne and Martha Jane Marshall. However, in the 1908 biography of her brother, William H.H. Payne, cited the children of Thomas Hamilton Payne as: "Elizabeth, wife of John O'Neil, of Duncan; Kate, wife of Thomas Joyner, of Oklahoma; Samuel M., of Stephens county; William H., whose career has been sketched; Winfield, near Red Moon, Oklahoma; Levi N(ewton), of Wewoka, Oklahoma; JOSEPHINE, wife of L. F. McClannahan, of Duncan." In another biography, this one of brother-in-law John O'Neill, she was referenced as "Gallic (sic), wife of Fred McClannahan, a carpenter and builder who lives at Holbrook, Arizona."

On the 1860 census, she was listed as "Pain, Catherine J. 3 F Mo" instead of as Caladonia Josephine. In 1870, she was simply listed as Carrie.

One day Callie commented, after hearing a story told by her grand-nephew Lewis Adair Payne, that she would "have to tell [Vice-President] Marshall about this!" Ken Harvey was not sure if this was a true story, of just Callie being playful with Lewis. It appears, however, that Vice President Thomas Riley Marshall was indeed a second cousin of Caldonia and her siblings.

Ken also writes that it was understood that three McClanahans (Olivia's siblings) married three Paynes (Samuel's siblings) in this generation.

Ken thinks her children went to Quanah High School, and that she dies in Quanah. However, as they lived in Oklahoma in 1900, and Arizona in 1910, this may not be correct.

1880 - An "L. C. Payne" was recorded living with her married brother, Samuel Marshall Payne, in Cooke Co., Texas on 7 June 1880 where she was listed as [teaching school] at the age of 19.

In this census reference to L. C. Payne the age is unclear, and could have been 17 years.

1884 - On her marriage certificate in Montague County Courthouse Marriage Book B, page 183, her name is spelled Lula Payne. The ceremony was conducted by W. E. Wilson, Ordained Minister.

In biography of her brother William Henry Harrison Payne, she is listed as "Lula, wife of Allison Scott, of Duncan."In another biography, this one of her brother-in-law, John O'Neill, she was referenced as "Lulu, wife of Allison Scott, a retired railroad man at Fort Worth, Texas."

In his Personal Journal, Lewis Adair Payne wrote on March 21, 1936: "Martha [Scott], Marie [Scott], and Florence [Scott] came back out for an hour or so, I then went with them to Aunt Hatties [Payne nee Brown] to get Aunt Lou [Scott nee Payne]. Then to Duncan. Dinner at Bessies. They home and I to the airport."

Fay Yeager cites "Indian Pioneer History" volume 40 as saying "Thomas Payne was deputy Marshall of Ardmore 1891-1892." Ardmore is in Carter County, adjoining Stephens County.

On the 1896 Chickasaw Census Roll for Pickens County, Velma Township, Indian Territory, Thomas B Payne is shown as a 34 year old male, with his tribal enrollment taking place in 1897 in Pickens County (No. 77). He was shown as the son of Thomas H. Payne and Martha J. Payne, both noncitizens. His son, Thomas H. Payne, is shown as being 5 years old, 1/32 Chickasaw by blood, with a tribal enrollment also in Pickens County (No. 20), and shown as the son of Thomas B. Payne and Mollie Payne (deceased), a resident of Pickens County.

An unnamed baby, a child of Thomas Payne, is buried (undated) in Section 9, Block 15, Plot 7, Marlow Cemetery, Oklahoma. It is not known if it was a boy or girl. Could this have been a child of Thomas and Molly? The three of them are buried side by side.

Mr. & Mrs. Rufe Deck came down from Chickasha to attend the funeral of Tom Payne who died this morning at 6.

Died this morning at the residence of John O'Neill, Tom Payne, after a long and lingering illness like consumption. He owned a fine farm near Arthur where he lived with his family. He leaves a wife & 4 children, the oldest, a son who is attending school in Decatur, TX. He will be buried in the Marlow Cemetery. He was a bro. to Mrs. John O'Neill, Walter & Wm. Payne of Marlow. Charles Strong reports that Thomas Bunker Payne died without a will. He owned some 300 acres of land that he had been alloted as being a Chickasaw by Marriage, so it took some time to settle his estate due to his children being minors. He cites Stephens County OK Probate Case #290. Walter W. Payne was guardian and executor of his estate.

Monument Unveiled
On Sunday afternoon in the biting wind the Duncan camp W. O. W. unveiled the beautiful monument erected by that order at the grave of Thos. Payne. The attendance was large the weather considered. The beautiful ceremony was carried out by the Duncan camp and a short talk made by G. W. Siever, C. C. of Marlow camp. The monument is imposing being the largest one in the cemetery.

He ran cattle on land leased from Indian Territory (Oklahoma) Indians. It cost him ten cents an acre. He made a great deal of money out of this. He and his brother-in-law started a bank in Duncan. The checks were yellow and easily spotted in a pile.

1919-Walter W. Payne, resident of Duncan, files an Affidavit of Heirship concerning his older brother Samuel's affairs. Samuel had died intestate nine years previously.

1920-A Lodger in the home of Sarah Garrison of Alabama, in the King Township of Duncan. His occupation was listed as Farmer, Home Farm.

1929-Walter W. Payne is buried in Section 10, Block 10, Plot 6, Marlow Cemetery, Oklahoma."

Walter Payne Answers Call Brief Illness Fatal to Pioneer Rancher of Stephens County. Funeral Services This Thursday.

Funeral services were held this Thursday afternoon for Walter W. Payne, pioneer ranchman of this section, who passed away early Wednesday morning. Services were at the First Methodist Church at 2 o'clock, with Rev. J. J. Ward officiating, assisted by Rev. A. P. Johnson.

Burial was in the Marlow Cemetery. Arrangements were in charge of Beeson Grantham.

Mr. Payne had suffered an attack of acute indigestion on Monday. He appeared to recover from this attack but was not feeling in the best of health, and decided to go to Sulphur for treatment. He left Tuesday, accompanied by his daughter, Mrs Jack Benton, and Mr. Benton. He was feeling much better Tuesday evening, and Mr. Benton returned to Duncan. Mrs. Benton remained with her father.

Early Wednesday morning Mr. Payne suffered a second and more serious attack, resulting in his death at 2:30 o'clock. The deceased was born in Missouri, coming to what is now Stephens County when he was 20 years of age. He has since lived most of the time at his ranch 10 miles east and 3 miles north of Duncan.

He was also active in the affairs of this city. He was associated with the late J. D. Wade and J. M. Armstrong in the Duncan National Bank and also served on the city council at an early day. Mr. Payne had been engaged in the raising of beef cattle at his ranch during the past few years. He recently purchased two Hereford bulls that ranked high at the fat stock show at Ft. Worth, said to be two of the finest beef animals ever brought to Stephens County.

Six children, four daughters and two sons, survive. The daughters are Mrs. Ethel Benton of this city; Mrs Hoyt Hardin, 609 Maple Avenue; Mrs Vera Roberts of Oklahoma City; and Mrs. Louise Birnie of Shawnee. The sons are Carl and Dukie Payne, who lived with him on the ranch. There is one brother, Newton Payne, of Chandler, Arizona, and one sister, Mrs. A. Scott, of Ft. Worth. Seven grandchildren also survive. Mr. Payne was a member of the Masonic and Woodmen lodges, and of the Methodist Church.

His wife Gertrude and daughter Emma died prior to the 1910 census, and Walter can be found with his sons Carl and John E "Dukey" sharing the home of his recently widowed sister-in-law, Lillie James Payne. His youngest daughter, four year old Louisia, was living with her maternal grandparents, William and Mollie Gentry, listed as "Layease, age 4." His older daughters, Mary Ethel (age 11), Vera (age 9), and Virginia (age 7), were enrolled at the St. Joseph Catholic Boarding School in Chickasha, Grady County.

Annie had a considerable library and she gave Lewis Adair Payne a set of Shakespeare's plays. The volumes were bound in rococo leather and printed on thin India paper. These had been given to her as a gift by her lawyer. Lewis was supposed to inherit her set of Dickens books but they went elsewhere.

She had a beautiful large cut glass punch bowl which was thought to have been stolen for a long time. One day it was discovered in the local priest's home. Apparently she had lent it for a church event and both parties forgot about it.

She died in poverty having lost her money through lack of financial acuity. She was a very generous and thoughtful person.

Known as Birdie O'Neill. She was a witness at her sister Annie's wedding. She ran her father's department store in Duncan and died unmarried, fairly young. This store building later became the Burr Store.

Miss Byrd O'Niell (sic) died at 4:30 o'clock Tuesday afternoon at a sanitarium in Oklahoma City, where she had been about three months. While her death was not wholly unexpected, the news was a distinct shock to the many friends of the deceased, who was a most excellent and beloved young woman.

The deceased had spent most of her life in Duncan and by her amiable and charming traits of character had won and held a large circle of warm friends, who are deeply grieved over her demise. Miss O'Niell (sic) was a graduate of the Catholic seminary at Guthrie. Of her immediate family she is survived by one sister, Mrs. J.R. Sparks.

The remains will be brought to this city this afternoon and interment will be in the cemetery here.

The remains will arrive on the 4:30 train this afternoon and will be taken to the home of Mr. and Mrs. Sparks. Funeral services will be held at the Catholic church at 10 o'clock Thursday morning.

In 1910, it APPEARS that Frank was living in Bell County, Texas, and married to an Estelle. They were living, along with her two children from a prior marriage, in the boarding home of George Hughs.

Kenneth Harvey writes that "Frank was believed to have married his first wife in order to give her unborn son a name. He claimed the child was his but no one believed him in later years. He was known to be that sort of generous type of man. The mother died shortly after the marriage. At the time of the 1920 census, he was living with his brother-in-law in Duncan on Pine Street.

His sister Effie then raised the little boy that was believed to have been adopted. There were no papers involved. He was somewhat difficult youngster and was later sent to a military academy. He was not really very popular in the extended family-actually he was rather disliked. Afterwards he drifted to California and lost contact with the Payne family.

Peggy had been married before and had a son who was a gambler. He ended up owning the Wade Hotel in Duncan as a result. She had a daughter who lived out in Hollywood.

Spent thirty days in jail for allegedly making whisky during prohibition. He had not actually been making it but merely in the vicinity and the authorities knew that-they simply wanted more information. He refused to squeal however about who the real perpetrators were and as a result accepted the blame.

He didn't like cowboying. He would not stand for drunken brawls where he worked. Frank was a big man.

Frank is buried in Section 10, Block 10, Plot 2, Marlow Cemetery, Oklahoma. It is recorded that he died in Wichita Falls, Texas. (Dorothy Pattison, MCCLANAHAN FAMILY HISTORY (unpublished))."

As of the 1930 census, the family appeared to be living in Donna Texas. The household was headed by Jennie S. Payne, age 49, divorced. Aubrey H, age 50, was listed last, and as a boarder? He was also shown as divorced.

Aubrey married Sarah Jane Williams about 1904. Sarah was born on 22 Mar 1881 in Texas; died on 3 Aug 1964 in Eureka Springs, Carroll County, Arkansas; was buried in I.O.O.F. Cemetery, Eureka Springs, Carroll County, Arkansas. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

Sammy's body never grew and he died unmarried at a young age. Shortly before his death he had a good pair of riding shoes made for him which were later worn by a succession of his small nephews and nieces, ending with Lewis Payne. Sammy used to ride around on a very small pony.

Kenneth Harvey wrote the following brief biography of Marvin Walter Payne: Marvin was named after the Methodist Bishop Marvin whom his mother particularly respected.

Marvin was about twelve years old when his photograph was taken in a family group with his parents. This photograph survives and is in the collection of Lewis Adair Payne (1997).

As a teenager he was out on the trail cattle herding with his father when he became very ill. Totally incapacitated he was left to lie in agony on the bedrolls in the accompanying chuck wagon. They were miles from anywhere. He later believed that the severe bouncing and bucking of the wagon as it slowly and labourously moved across the untamed countryside saved his life. Much later on it was proved that he had in fact survived a burst appendix; not a very common occurance. Most die from it. He was to say in later years that "I left my appendix on the Western Trail and the cattle walked over it."

He worked as a cowboy and attended high school part-time until he was twenty.

There is another photograph, this time of his high school graduation in from Quanah High School in May 1901. This shows him holding his sheepskin diploma-no "mere paper" at that time! The photograph shows five girls dressed like bridesmaids and one boy with a flower in his button hole, all students surrounding a man who is presumably the school principal. Marvin, the solitary boy (young adult), is at the rear (apparently education was not a very macho activity among the youth of the town). His younger sister Effie stands to his immediate right. Marvin read an essay to the assembled parents on "Closing Events of the Nineteenth Century." His sister Effie read an essay on "Duty." One of the other girls present was a Payne double first cousin, Lula Pearl McClanahan (daughter of Fred Lafayette McClanahan and Calla Payne). She read an essay on "Courage." Other graduating students were Bettie Carter, Cora B. Matlock, and a Miss Johnson. A long term correspondence with Miss Gabie E. Betts, later Burton (1871-?) begins after Marvin graduates from Quanah High School. Miss Gabie, as she refers to herself, used to live in Quanah where she taught in the elementary School. She was known as one of the best primary school teachers in the Panhandle. She later moved to teach at Clarendon College. She addresses Marvin in very affectionate terms--indeed as her son. The letters were saved by Grace after Marvin's death, and passed down to Mary Ann Mounts Payne.

Marvin graduated in 1903 from the Metropolitan Business School.

Marvin married Grace Gentry in 1907 and the young couple lived with her parents for some years in Oklahoma until they moved back to Quanah, Texas. He then worked there in a lumber company from about 1912.

On his father's death in 1916 the family farm was mortgaged and the family divided the proceeds. Marvin fell heir to the mortgage and immediately rented it out to help pay off the mortgage . He now worked as a book-keeper for a wholesale company in Chickasha, circa. 1920, and then moved back to Duncan where he was involved in a restaurant. He didn't stay long at that and he was to become the manager of the Chickasha Cotton Oil Mill in 1921. He then lost this job when the mill was sold during the depression. The family returned to live on the farm, four miles S.W. of Marlow, on Hell Creek. Unfortunately times were very difficult and he could not keep up the payments. The family property was repossessed by the mortgage company. The local official delivering the eviction notice, in about 1937, was a friend and he was to say "Marvin I hate to do this to you." The poor man's only response was "You have to, its your job." Marvin put the papers on the kitchen table in the house and never looked at them. The whole tragic experience hit him very hard indeed and really robbed him of all subsequent motivation. They now put the family furniture in storage but could not even keep up these payments; consequently it too was all lost. To add insult to injury, some years later oil was discovered ont he farm and today (1997) there is a sign which says; "Chevron USA Inc, W.M. Payne Lease Sec 35-2N-8W."

Grace's mother was unable to keep up payment on her own home mortgage, and sold the residence to her daughter and Marvin for a dollar. The families moved in with Mary on Spruce road. It was not long, however, before Marvin was unable to keep up those payments, and that house was lost as well. It was a bitter time. At some point the family returned to the old Marlow farmstead which they had been forced to leave, paying rent to live there. Marvin eventually went to work with a cattle auction company.

According to Fay Payne Yeager, Thomas R. Marshall (Vice President of the United States) was a cousin of Martha Jane Marshall Payne. He stayed in the home of Marvin and Grace (Gentry) Payne while on a speaking tour of Oklahoma. He said he remembered attending family reunions with Martha when he was younger.

M. W. Payne, Long Resident Here Dies

Marvin Walter Payne, 1106 Oak, died at 10 o'clock Sunday night in a local hospital after a lengthy illness. He was a retired accountant.
The funeral service will be held at the Beeson Grantham Funeral Home chapel at 3:30 p. m. Tuesday, with the Rev. John A Callan (sic), pastor of the First Methodist Church, and the Rev. Thurmond George, pastor of the First Baptist Church, officiating.
Born in Gainesville, Tex., Pay ne came to Duncan in 1904 and had been a resident here for more than 40 years.
Surviving are the widow; three sons, Chad In Berlin, Germany, Lewis Adair of Stillwater, and Marvin W. jr., Duncan; one daughter, Mrs. Bob Thompson, Pampa, Tex;, one brother, Aubry (sic) H., Muleshoe, Tex; and five grandchildren.
Pallbearers are Rich Edwards, Bill Boydston, J. B. McLendon, Leroy Tucker, Oscar Young, J. D. Walker, Leonard Bumpas, and H. C. Allen.

Marvin Payne is Buried in Marlow From an unidentified Duncan, OK newspaper, dated 1948

Death took a longtime resident of Stephens County this week after he had been ill for many years. Marvin Walter Payne died in a Duncan Hospital Sunday night. He had lived in Duncan and vicinity most of the time since 1904 and will be remembered as the manager of the Duncan Cotton Oil Mill, a position which he held for many years. Payne was born in Gainsville, Texas. When he was a child, his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Samuel Payne, moved to Quannah, Texas, where they owned one of the big ranches in that part of the country. Payne was reared and educated in Quannah. He came to Duncan as a young man. He married Grace Ellen Gentry of Arthur in 1907.

He was in Chickasha for many years where he was connected with the Chickasha Cotton Oil Mill. In the early thirties he became ill and moved back to the old homeplace northwest of Duncan. He is survived by his widow and his four children, Chad who is now stationed with the Army in Berlin, Germany; Lewis Adair, Stillwater; Marvin W. Jr., Duncan, and Mrs Bob Thompson, Pampa, Texas. Funeral Services were held at the Beeson-Grantham Funeral chapel on Tuesday afternoon with the Rev. John A Callan of the First Methodist Church and the Rev. Thurmond George of the First Baptist Church officiating. He was buried in the Marlow Cemetery.

There is another photograph, this time of his high school graduation in from Quanah High School in May 1901. This shows him holding his sheepskin diploma-no "mere paper" at that time! The photograph shows five girls dressed like bridesmaids and one boy with a flower in his button hole, all students surrounding a man who is presumably the school principal. Marvin, the solitary boy (young adult), is at the rear (apparently education was not a very macho activity among the youth of the town). His younger sister Effie stands to his immediate right. Marvin read an essay to the assembled parents on "Closing Events of the Nineteenth Century." His sister Effie read an essay on "Duty." One of the other girls present was a Payne double first cousin, Lula Pearl McClanahan (daughter of Fred Lafayette McClanahan and Calla Payne). She read an essay on "Courage."

Effie raised the boy that her brother Frank was believed to have adopted.

She never had any other children.

Joseph Ray Payne, Sr. lifetime Marlow resident active many years in farming and ranching, died Wednesday, Aug. 18, 12:30 a.m., in the local hospital. He had suffered ill health for some time. Born in Marlow on July 16, 1892, Payne was 73 years old. He lived here all his life and attended local schools. His marriage was in Marlow on July 28, 1911, to Mable(sic) Lyle.
Prominent in the farming and ranching fields for many years, in more recent years he had been retired. He was a member of the local First Methodist church. The family home is located at 511 N. Broadway.
Survivors include his wife of the home, two sons, Joseph R. Payne, Jr., Marlow, and William T.(Thomas) Payne, Tulsa, and one daugher, Mrs. Mary Lynn Purdum, Oklahoma City. Also there are seven grandchildren and three great grandchildren.
Funeral will be held Friday, August 20, at 10:30 a.m. in the First Methodist church, conducted by Rev. Clarence Ball, pastor. Burial will be in Marlow Cemetery with Callaway-Smith Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
Bearers will be John M. Briscoe, Jr., Jim Thompson, Ralph Abney, Jack Thompson, Seth Thompson, Ira Green, Hugh Gatlin, and Tip Graham.

Joseph married Mabel Lyles on 5 Apr 1943 in Marlow, Stephens County, Oklahoma. Mabel was born about 1893; died about 1977. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

As of 1956, he was living at 514 West Gilkey, Marlow, Oklahoma. This was also the residence of his mother, Hattie (Brown) Payne. As the Will of Hattie Payne does not dispose of the home, it is not known if she was living with her son in his home, or if it was her home but had been transferred to Lee prior to her death. Also living in the home on West Gilkey with Hattie and Lee were Hattie Mildred Shaw, granddaughter, and Kay Denice Shaw, Great Granddaughter.

Hattie left each of her heirs the sum of $10, and son Lee B. Payne was to receive the residue of all money; furthermore, she left her China Closet and all the contents to Mildred Shaw, and her Piano to Kay Denice Shaw, leaving the remainder of her property, including furniture, jewelry, and all other money to her son Lee B. Payne, "with full knowledge of the help and peace of mind which his love, care and affection has provided for me during my life time."

Lee's memorial inscription reads Lee D. Payne 2 June 1959. He is buried in Section 10, Block 9, Lot 5 in Marlow Cemetery.

An infant Joe R. Payne born circa 1913 and died 30 Oct 1913 is buried in Section 10, Block 9, Lot 6. It is possible this is a son of Lee's.

Charles Strong noted that according to court documents, Lee had been living in Chandler, Arizona prior to his death in 1959. On the 10th of January, 1961, the final decree and distribution in the matter of the Last Will and Estate of Lee B. Payne was decreed in the County Court of Stephens, Oklahoma. Harold N. Payne and Evelyn M. Payne were joint executors and trustees. Their relationship to Lee B. Payne is not known.

The residue of the estate at that time consisted of mineral rights for approximately 21 acres of land and cash of $214. The court found that Lee B. Payne left TWO SURVIVING SONS WHO WERE NOT MENTIONED IN THE WILL OF LEE B. PAYNE, DECEASED HEREIN, and said surviving sons were omitted heirs at law under the law of the State of Oklahoma; that said surviving sons were John Earl Payne and Henry Lee Payne, both being of legal age and competent and that each and both surviving children were the only surviving children of the deceased, the only other child of deceased being Hattie Mildred Moore, who predeceased her father, the said Lee B. Payne, herein. That the children of Hattie Mildred Moore, deceased daughter of Lee B. Payne were heirs under the terms of the Will of the said Lee B. Payne, the same being John Lee McWhorter and Kay Denise Shaw; and future that the children of ONE OF THE OMITTED CHILDREN OF LEE B. PAYNE, were heirs under the Will of Lee B. Payne , herein, the same being Michael Payne, Mary Ellen Payne and Patrick Payne. THAT THE TWO OMITTED CHILDREN OF LEE B. PAYNE, DECEASED TESTATOR HEREIN, WERE JOHN EARL PAYNE AND HENRY LEE PAYNE, who entered this probate matter and voluntarily signed Disclaimer and Renunciation of Interest hereing in the entire estate of Lee B. Payne......(emphasis added) further finds; that under the terms of the will the estate is to be conveyed in trust to Millie Payne, wife of the deceased for life....

Graveside service for Lee B. Payne was held in the Marlow cemetery on Sunday at 3:30 p.m. conducted by Rev. George L. Needham, pastor of the First Methodist church.

Payne, 64, a former resident of Marlow, died at 8:00 a.m. on Tuesday, June 2, in Chandler, Ariz., where he had lived for the past three years. The funeral was held Thursday at Chandler.

Serving as bearers for the local service, directed by Callaway Smith Funeral Home, were Pud Tullous, Roy Scott, John M. Briscoe, Virgil Flurry, J.W. Taylor and Cecil Troxel.

The year of his birth is sometimes shown as 1877, but his granddaughter, Linda Miller, shows it as 1878. This is based on their family Bible. Linda notes that he had a cleft palate and wore a mustached most of the time to cover it up, his features appeared Indian, but he had light blue eyes.

Ken Harvey writes that he was known as Bert, and that he was a professional cowboy. His granddaughter, Linda Miller, says her father said he was always called Will by his family. Grace Ellen Gentry, who knew him, had a lot of respect for William Bertram. She had high standards and was not an easy lady to please. He was considered a very physically tough person but he was very well mannered. He worked for his uncle Walter W. Payne at one point, Walter having a ranch.

He once had an accident when roping steers. His lower arm ended up being jerked off at the elbow. He gained a lot of respect from the fact that he didn't let this later hinder him on a horse. He used to hold the reins wrapped around the stump and it was considered that he could do more than many men who had both their hands.

Linda Miller recalls the story of how her grandfather actually lost his arm as follows: "He had been working on the Bell Ranch in New Mexico, when a young cowboy thought it would be funny to see old Will Payne be thrown, so he hit the horse (just green broke) that my grandfather was riding on the rump with his felt hat and he was thrown alright. My grandfather at the time weighed about 230 pounds and was 6 foot 2 or 4 inches tall. When he fell it drove his left arm into the ground. There was a compound fracture above the elbow. The doctor that was available thought it best to take off his arm right above the break. It did not heal well and went back to Oklahoma and then went to a doctor in Missouri that took it off in the shoulder joint after gangrene had set in. During his weakened condition he contracted T.B. and died of it when my father was 6 months old, leaving my grandmother a young widow with three boys."

The family bible had his death date as 11 Mar 1923, Death Certificate has death date 13 Mar 1923. Walter went to Chandler, Arizona in 1918 then returned to Oklahoma shortly after that. He died of the flu, with the secondary cause of death being pneumonia. This was the year of the great Spanish Flu epidemic. The undertaker was L. Woodward, Duncan. The death certificate also showed him as age 40 years, 3 months, which would put his year of birth around 1883.

Walter's wife, Molly, returned to Arizona with her children, except for Blanche who was already married. Molly moved to Arizona with Fred Payne and his wife, who was her sister. Fred is the brother to Walter.

This shows him holding his sheepskin diploma-no "mere paper" at that time! The photograph shows five girls dressed like bridesmaids and one boy with a flower in his button hole, all students surrounding a man who is presumably the school principal. Marvin, the solitary boy (young adult), is at the rear (apparently education was not a very macho activity among the youth of the town). His younger sister Effie stands to his immediate right. Marvin read an essay to the assembled parents on "Closing Events of the Nineteenth Century." His sister Effie read an essay on "Duty." One of the other girls present was a Payne double first cousin, Lula Pearl McClanahan (daughter of Fred Lafayette McClanahan and Calla Payne). She read an essay on "Courage.""

MISSES ADA MCCALLAHAN and EFFIE PAYNE of Duncan were in the city. Miss McCallahan has been elected to fill the vacancy occasioned by the resignation of MISS FANNY BAKER.

Ada McClanahan, Olive McClanahan's niece, was a great beauty. She was thought to have been brought up in Duncan. In 1933/4 she came back, or at least came, for a visit to Duncan from Arizona. Ada was looking for the Marvin Payne family and was asking directions. When she met the nineteen year old Lewis Adair Payne and asked him for their whereabouts He was totally tongue-tied by the sight of her. She was to report back to his mother, Grace, when she finally found the house that Lewis certainly wasn't going to give away any secrets.

Ada later married a man from Kingman, Arizona who is thought to have managed a picture theatre there. His name is not known. Ada may have married in Duncan if she had been brought up there, however, the McClanahan family do not appear in the 1910 Stephens Co. census. There is a the strong possibility that Ada was Callie's, approximately 45 year old, daughter in 1933. The idea is further substantiated by Lewis' understanding that Ada was a double second cousin of his. She may have had a previous marriage.

It is a very simple marker, laying flat on her lot. It is inscribed "Mother Myrtle May Stoneking" with her year of birth, 1896, to the left of her name and her year of death, 1937 to the right.

Myrtle married Marion Allen Stoneking about 1918. Marion was born on 30 Nov 1895 in Kelly, Socorro County, New Mexico; died on 12 Jan 1954; was buried in Sunset Memorial Park, Albuquerque, Bernalillo County, New Mexico. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

In Lewis Adair Payne's Personal Journal he wrote on March 16, 1936 "I went up to see Orville who is near death and promised [his brother] Claude to return and keep him company while he watched over him. Suppered at Uncle Frank's [Gentry] and then back to be with Claude. Homer Strong [married to Anna Laura Payne] was there too and stayed until nearly 1 am. Claude and I not to bed until 2:30. He gave me money to eat breakfast one." On March 23 he followed up with a related entry "Saw Claude who says that Orville is much better considering."

Later in life, Lewis told Kenneth Harvey that Orville 'was a terrible talker' and that he never married.

A beautiful woman with a rose-petal complexion. A cosmetic company, Francis Denny, paid her salary for a year to prevent her working for the competition. She didn't have to do anything. She was quite clear in her mind that her features owed nothing to cosmetics-she considered her regular drinks of iced water to be the secret.

She later had one breast removed. When she was ill young Lewis Adair Payne was called into her room for the purpose of being told that he came from a good family and he was never to forget it. Lewis lived in her home for a time.

She married Ray Hard. He had invented some sort of oil field tool.

After Florence died it is believed that a set of beautiful Japanese hand-painted Noritake plates belonging to her was given to Lewis Adair Payne. They are now in the collection of Penny Ethlen Payne.

A family genealogist, she did a lot of work on the Marshalls. In 1915, she compiled a single page handwritten family group sheet titled "Grand Father Marshall Family" from data presumably supplied by her mother, Lula Payne. The original is in the possession of Margaret Lou Rounds (Mrs. Clark) of Fort Worth. Her husband gave her a copy of Brook Payne's book when it was published in the 1930's.

Thomas's mother died when he was just three months old. His father remarried shortly after he turned six. Sometime after his father's remarriage, Thomas was sent to Decatur, Texas to attend school. His daughter, Anna Laura Payne, believes this school was run by Jesuits. While he was away at school, about six months after his thirteenth birthday, his father died "of a long and lingering illness like consumption." Before he turned 17, Thomas's stepmother died as well. Within the next ten years, both of his younger half-brothers died tragically. In spite of suffering these many significant losses, Thomas was a gregarious and outgoing person with many friends. He loved to hunt and be in the outdoors.

Ken Harvey wrote "Tom was musical and learned to play the piano by ear. He seemed, throughout his life, to have had little sense of responsibility or of time. As a boy he would often disappear and be found, for example, asleep in a field. His father often had to saddle up his horse and go and get him when he was missing from home as a child."

Harvey continued "In the First World War Tommy served in the 90th Division US Army alongside his double cousin Carl. Tommy used to collect enemy arms after a military action, Carl reported, even though he was not allowed to keep them. He could be seen staggering across the battlefield weighed down, dropping a weapon from the pile he clutched when he saw another gun he preferred better. He was a marksman who shot left-handed. He had been excused from further army rifle practice in basic training, and allowed to fire holding the gun as he wished, when it was discovered how accurate his aim was."

Daughter Anna Laura reported that her father did not go oversees until after the Armistice, he was part of the later occupaying forces. She remembers waving to him from the train station as he departed for the service. After he returned from overseas, Thomas resumed his farming and ranching operations in Stephens county.

Charles Strong reports that Tom lost his land in the late 1920's, after the bottom fell out of the cattle market. He had borrowed money against his ranch from a bank in Wichita, Kansas to raise a herd of cattle. A couple of years later, when they had fully matured, he shipped them by freight train to Chicago to be sold. The market crashed, and the sale of his cattle didn't raise enough even to pay the freight charges that were due on his shipment. To avoid foreclosure, Tom arranged to sell his land holdings to Leonard Ketchum. Ketchum paid him a few thousand dollars in cash, and also assumed to notes that were due on the land, a fair and gracious offer that helped keep Tom on his feet.

Tom used this stake to homestead for a while in Wyoming, thinking this would give him a fresh start. He thought it a great adventure. Bessie was horrified. Charles Strong recalls that Bessie's initial impression of the Wyoming homesteads was favorable. She admired both the large screened in porches, and long clothes lines. Her admiration turned to stark terror, however, when she learned that the screened in porches were actually set up so the children had somewhere to play away from the rattlesnakes. She also came to realize that long lines between the homes and barns weren't for clothers. They were set up so that you wouldn't get lost and freeze to death going between your barn and your home in the case of a sudden blizzard. At Bessie's urging, they soon moved back to Oklahoma.

These setbacks eventually became too much for Tom. One day he simply disappeared, leaving Bessie and his children behind. Unbeknownst to them, he moved to California. This is how he was listed at the time of the 1930 Federal Census:

The occupations of the lodgers in both the Taylor lodging home, and in the homes of their immediate neighbors, made it clear he was part of the booming oil and gas industry in California. In 1900, the state of California produced 4 million barrels. By 1910, this had jumped to 77 million barrels. In the 1920's three new major fields were discovered in rapid succession - Huntington Beach (1920), Santa Fe Springs (1921), and the biggest of them all, the Signal Hill, where Thomas lived. By April 1922, only 10 months after completion of the discovery well, Signal Hill was covered with 108 wells, producing 14,000 barrels daily. By the fall of 1923, 259,000 barrels of crude was being produced every day from nearly 300 wells. Signal Hill was the biggest field the already productive Southern California region had ever seen....this made California the nation's number-one producing state, and in 1923, California was the source of one-quarter of the world's entire output of oil!

Tom appeared to be in the Long Beach area for well over a decade. In August, 1943, he filed a document with the Long Beach, California Selective Service board. It was a request for permission to depart the United States to visit the country of Alaska, which was not yet a state. He was in the employ of Guy F. Atkinson Co of San Francisco, a heavy construction company. As the nature of his business was listed as "confidential," it is likely he was involved in a civil engineering project in Alaska related to the war effort.

Back home in Oklahoma, in September 1950, his family had him declared legally dead so they could probate his estate and apply for benefits based on his enrollement in the Chickasaw tribe. Daughter Lois Marie Payne was named executor. Because they had not heard from him in over twenty years, they had no idea if he was still living.

Tom remained in the Pacific Northwest after the second World War, working as a civil servant at various Air Force Bases in and around Alaska. When he became terminally ill, the Red Cross reconnected Tom and his family in Oklahoma, via letters, prior to his death.

On the Standard Certificate of Death, State of Oregon, Thomas H. Payne is shown as having died at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Portland, Multnomah County, Oregon on December 12, 1957. His usual residence is shown as Palmer, Alaska, and his usual occupation is shown as Laborer. It appears that his marital status was subject to some question. It looks as if the "divorced" box was originally checked, and then scribbled over. The "married" box is checked, and the name of his spouse is shown as Mrs. Bessie Payne. The date of birth is given as March 20, 1893, and his birthplace is shown as Marlow, Oklahoma. Mother and Father are shown as "unknown." It is noted that he was a Veteran of World War I, and that the information on the death certificate was taken from his VA records. The certificate was signed by W.A Haug, MD, Asst. Pathologist. The funeral director was A.J. Rose and Son of Portland, and the cemetery or crematorium being Willamette National Cemetery in Portland, Oregon. A telegraph regarding his death was sent the next day to Anna Laura Strong in Duncan.

Anna Laura Strong also received a letter from Mrs. Earle W. Barry, Star Route, Palmer, Alaska some eight months after her father died. She had apparently written Mrs. Barry regarding some trouble they were having in regards to an insurance settlement. Mrs. Barry informed her that she had "never heard him mention a divorce at any time and I believe I would have heard tell about it some time when he was under the influence of liquor. He was in California before he came to Alaska. The boys met him in Amchitka Island that was an Army base, the last was Ladd Field...near Fairbank, before that he was (at) Eidson Base. I am sending some papers that were laying around. Hope they will help you. Tom was a good man. His worst enemy was liquor."

Among Tom's personal effects that were returned to his family were his wallet and four photographs: two of the photos were of co-workers, Lee H. Talley of Iowa and Richard Neal of Missouri; one photo of Tom himself in outdoor gear; and a studio portrait of "Marie and Midge." Richard Neal inscribed his photo, taken at Amchitka Base Headquarters, "To a very good Pal from a Boiler house cook." Marie inscribed her portrait, dated 1944, as well, saying that although it was "not a good picture" of either her or Midge, she thought Tom might wish to cut it down to fit his wallet. He chose to keep it intact.

His brown Norwegian Cowhide wallet contained several money order receipts, a blank check from the First National Bank of Fairbanks, receipts for funds he received as a VA patient in Oregon (claim #1431661), his 1956-1957 Alaska Resident Hunting License, an National Rifle Association of America Membership card, a Veterans of Foreign Wars Ballard Post 3063 card, a membership card from the Ladd AFB Civilian Club of Fairbanks, his U.S. Civil Service Commission retirement card dated May 6, 1957 (#CSA-466-659), his union card from the National Federation of Federal Employees Local 899, a receipt for a .22 caliber rifle, and a business card from the Association of Baptists for World Evangelism, based in Philadelphia. On the back of this card was written "Benjamin Constant, Amazona Brasil, S.A.".

A few pieces of correspondence were returned as well. Among these were his 1943 permit to leave the US for Alaska; a 1948 letter from the IRS--mailed to Tom in Seattle--regarding a $32 refund on the 1946 taxes; a "Notification of Personnel Action from Ladd AFB," dated July 8, 1955, showing Tom's change in title from Stationary Boiler Fireman to Heating Equipment Fireman. His grade, WB-54-02-09, and his salary ($2.94 per hour) remained unchanged. Also saved were his separation from duty papers dated 20 May 1957. It showed that he was retiring due to disability, and that his permanent home address would be in care of Earl W. Barry of Palmer, Alaska. A prescription for various drugs to treat his bronchogenic carcinoma was included as well, signed by E. Dank, Capt. USAF, of Todd AFB. He also saved his acceptance as a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars. Ironically, his VFW Life Member card (No. 4427), also in his effects, was dated 1-1-1958, two weeks after his death.

These effects, as meager as they seem, were treasured by his daughters, and remained in 2005 in the position of his granddaughter, Lynn (Payne) Moroney of Oklahoma.

He was 1/32 Indian by blood through his mother. He appears as No. 3686 upon the "lists prepared by the Commission to the Five Civilized Tribes under the Act of Congress approved July 1, 1902 (32 Stat., 641), of persons entiled to enrollment as citizens by blood of the Chickasaw Nation and approved by the Secretary of the Interior December 12, 1902". Because of this, he was first alloted land when he was only eleven years old in Tishomingo, Indian Territory on July 9, 1904, Section 29, Town IN, Range 5W, 160 acres in total with a value of $1,040. (Cert # 8801, Cert 11253).

Clyde Payne, of Marlow, died at Stillwater Monday, according to word received by his uncle, W. W. Payne, of this city, last night. No. particulars concerning the death were given. He was attending A & M college. The body will arrive in Marlow and burial will be there Wednesday at 3 o'clock. Deceased was 26-years old and a son of Tom Payne, pioneer citizen of Stephens county. He was a brother of Carl Payne who was killed in a grade crossing crash near Minco (Oklahoma) several months ago. He is survived by a wife, formerly Miss Willie (Billie) Hall, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Bill Hall of this city.

Marlow Man Died At Stillwater Monday
Local Post of American Legion Gives Military Funeral

Clyde Payne of this city died Monday at Stillwater where he was attending the A & M College. The body arrived in this city Wednesday and was laid to rest in the City Cemetery at 10:30 o'clock that morning.

Deceased was 26 years old and a son of Tom Payne, pioneer citizen of Stephens County, and a nephew of Mrs. W. H. Payne of this city. He is a brother of Carl Payne who was killed in a grad crossing accident near Minco several months ago. He is survived by his wife and child. Mrs. Payne was formerly Miss Willie Hall, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Bill Hall of Duncan.

Mr. Payne was a veteran of the World War serving in the United States Navy. Funeral services at Marlow were in charge of the local post of the American Legion. A firing squad from Duncan assisted the local post in conduction the last sad rites and paying their respect to one of their number who had served his country well and honorably.

According to Fay (Payne) Yeager, her half-uncle Clyde Marion Payne was hooked on drugs, probably heroin or cocaine. This may have been due to World War I wounds. According to Fay, he had kicked the habit and was attending Oklahoma A & M in Stillwater. When he became ill, he made his wife (Bill) promise to not allow use of drugs. His death was supposedly a bad one. Both Fay and Lois PAYNE mentioned Clyde's wife as "BILL". Both commented how they competed to sit in her lap. Bill was glad to accomadate them, however she required them to "sit still and not wiggle."

Family of Five Killed When Train Strikes Auto
Mr. and Mrs. Paul Payne, Two Children and Niece Killed

El Reno, July 22---(Associated Press) ---A family of four was killed when a Rock Island passenger train struck the auto in which they were riding this afternoon, at a crossing one mile south of Union City.
The dead are:
PAUL PAYNE --25 farmer, Duncan
HIS WIFE,
TWO CHILDREN--a girl 4 years old and a boy 2 years old.
LILLIAN DECK--13, the only daughter of R. A. Deck of El Reno.
The gasoline tank of the automobile exploded and set fire to the wreckage. The bodies of all except Payne were badly burned. Payne, who was driving, was thrown clear of the wreckage and killed instantly. The Payne Family had been visiting in El Reno and was returning to their home in Duncan when the tragedy occurred.

Mr. and Mrs. Paul Payne and two babies of this city and Miss Lillian Deck of El Reno, about 13 years old, a niece of Mr. and Mrs. Payne, were instantly killed Saturday afternoon when the automobile in which they were riding was struck by Rock Island northbound passenger train No. 24, a short distance south of Union City, a few miles south of El Reno.Miss Deck had been a guest of the Payne family in Duncan for some time and (---faded print---) party was on the way to her home in El Reno when the accident happened. Miss Deck's father is a Rock Island conductor and has a passenger run. The tragedy happened at the same dangerous crossing that about two months ago occurred a similar smash and which took the lives of four occupants of an automobile. At this place the road and railroad track parallel for some distance before reaching the crossing. At the crossing the auto road takes a sudden turn and dip to cross the railroad. It is impossible to see a train at this place because of the high embankments. Mr. Payne is a nephew of W. W. Payne and Mrs. Payne is a niece of Mrs. Mack Vandergriff, of this city.
The bodies of the victims were brought as far as Marlow where met by relatives with conveyances and brought to Duncan for burial.

Paul Payne, Wife and Two Small Children Killed Near El Reno Saturday--Were Buried Here Monday
Mr. and Mrs. Paul Payne and two small children, 1 year and 3 months of age, and Lillian Deck, 13 year old daughter of Conductor and Mrs. Deck of El Reno, were instantly killed Saturday afternoon when the auto in which they were riding was struck by a train at a crossing south of Union City. Mr. Payne was thrown clear of the car and killed instantly while Mrs. Payne, the children and Miss Deck were burned to death when the gasoline tank on the car exploded and consumed the car.
The remains of the Payne family were brought here for funeral services and burial Monday afternoon.
The services were conducted by Rev. E. L. Kirtley and the Idlett Click Post of the American Legion.
Paul Payne was born in Marlow, some twenty-one years ago and was a son of Mr. and Mrs. Tom Payne, well known pioneers of this locality. He grew to manhood here but later moved to Duncan from which place he moved to his farm on Wild Horse after marrying a Duncan girl. It was on this farm that he was residing at the time he met his death. The deceased served in the late war and was an active member of the American Legion. The deceased family leave a large number of relatives and many friends who are deeply grieved over such a sad demise.

Mr. and Mrs. Paul Payne and two small children, 1 year and 3 months of age, and Lillian Deck, 13 year old daughter of Conductor and Mrs. Deck of El Reno, were instantly killed Saturday afternoon when the auto in which they were riding was struck by a train at a crossing south of Union City. Mr. Payne was thrown clear of the car and killed instantly while Mrs. Payne, the children and Miss Deck were burned to death when the gasoline tank on the car exploded and consumed the car. The remains of the Payne family were brought here for funeral services and burial Monday afternoon. The services were conducted by Rev. E. L. Kirtley and the Idlett Click Post of the American Legion. Paul Payne was born in Marlow, some twenty-one years ago and was a son of Mr. and Mrs. Tom Payne, well known pioneers of this locality. He grew to manhood here but later moved to Duncan from which place he moved to his farm on Wild Horse after marrying a Duncan girl. It was on this farm that he was residing at the time he met his death. The deceased served in the late war and was an active member of the American Legion. The deceased family leave a large number of relatives and many friends who are deeply grieved over such a sad demise.

Harry Carl Payne. 60, was found dead in his home on Duncan route 4, about 8 a.m. today. Death apparently was the result of a heart attack. A neighbor, Hoyt (Pete) Hardin, took Payne home between 8 and 9 p.m. Tuesday. Hardin, a brother-in-law, returned this morning and found Payne slumped on his bed and dead. Sheriff James Rose reported Payne had apparently sat on the bed and taken off his shoes, then suffered the heart attack. A retired farmer and rancher and veteran of World War I, Payne had lived in this area most of his life. He was a member of Velma Baptist Church. A native of Butler, Indian Territory, Payne was born February 14. 1897. Funeral will be at 2 p.m. Friday in the First Baptist Church here. Roy V. Harp, First Christian Church pastor, will officiate. Burial will be in Marlow Cemetery under direction of Grantham Funeral Home. Survivors include three sons, Paul James of 102 East Oak; W. L. of Duncan route 4; and Carl Jr. of Comanche. Also three sisters, Mrs.(Virginia Payne) Hoyt Hardin of Duncan route 4 and Mrs.(Vera Payne) John Young and Mrs. (Louise Payne) Charles Birnie, both of Roswell, N. M. and seven grandchildren.

There is an infancy photograph of Carl taken circa 1898 by L. C. Kelley in Duncan, I.T. It is in the possession of Lewis Adair Payne (1997).

All of their three sons, their only three children, were in the Pacific theatre of the 2nd. World War and all three were at the battle of Iwo Jima. All survived even though they were in the thick of the fighting. Dorothy Pattison records another son "Dickie" but this is unlikely.

1923-Mr. and Mrs. W.M. Gentry of this city (Duncan) celebrated their "Golden Wedding Day" Friday at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Carl Payne, a few miles east of this city.

Mary Ethel's mother died when she was just seven years old. She and her sisters Vera and Virginia can be found at the St. Joseph Catholic Boarding School in Chickasha, Grady County at the time of the 1910 census. Her widowed father was still ranching in Duncan, with the help of her brothers.

Mary Ethel had two daughters by her first husband. She married second a Mr. Madison and third J. W. Parker, but had no additional children.

Parker, 49, Sulphur, former resident of Duncan, died at 5:30 p.m. Friday in a Sulphur hospital after a short illness. The funeral service will be at 1:30 p.m. today from the Dunn Funeral Home chapel in Sulphur. Burial will be in the Marlow Cemetery. Mrs. Parker was born near Duncan on September 13, 1899, and lived here all her life until moving to California about 7 years ago. From California she moved to Sulphur. She was the daughter of Walter W. Payne, Stephens county pioneer rancher and business man. She is survived by the widower; two daughters, Mrs. Glen Jones, Weott, Calif., and Mrs. Allen Turner of Roff; two brothers, H.C. Payne and J.E. Payne, both of Duncan; three sisters, Mrs. Hoyt Hardin of Duncan, Mrs. John Young, and Mrs. Charles Birnie, both of Roswell, N.M.

Ethel Parker is buried in Section 10, Block 10, Plot 8, Marlow Cemetery. The date of birth shown on her headstone is different from the date shown in the above obituary. It is assumed that the date on the headstone is accurate.

Mrs. Allen Turner was the informant on her death certificate. Mary Ethel's death certificate indicated that she had been "In this community" for just 10 days, but her address was listed as 724 W. 14, Sulphur. Perhaps the period of 10 days refers to her stay at the DeLay Hospital, where she died of acute cardiac failure due to a coronary occlusion.

Last rites for Vera Payne Young, a former Duncan area resident who died Friday in Roswell, NM., will be at 3 p.m. Tuesday in Brooks Funeral Chapel. Mrs. Young, a native of the Duncan area, was born on the Payne ranch east of Duncan Aug. 12, 1901. She moved to Roswell eight months ago. Mrs. Young was a member of the First Christian Church here and the widow of John Young, who died here in 1959. Young formerly operated Young's Grocery, east of Duncan. Survivors include a son Clifford Payne Roberts, Lovington, N.M.; and two sisters, Mrs. (Virginia Payne) Hoyt Hardin, Duncan route 4, and Mrs. Louise Birnie, Roswell. Also surviving are two grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Roy Harp, retired First Christian pastor, will officiate assisted by Rev. Bill Masters, pastor. Burial will be by Brooks Funeral Home in Marlow Cemetery.

Mrs. Hardin's Rites Saturday

Mrs. Virginia Callie Hardin, 67, of Duncan Rt. 4, died at 10 p.m. Wednesday at her home following a long illness. Mrs. Hardin, born here on Aug. 23, 1903, was a member of the First Christian Church here. On May 2, 1925, she married Hoyt (Pete) Hardin in Walters.

Survivors include her husband of the home; a daughter, Mrs. Frances DuBose of Houston, Tex.; a grandson and a great-granddaughter. Service will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday in the Don Grantham Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Morgan Sly, pastor of the First Christian Church, officiating. Burial will be in the Duncan Cemetery. Bearers will be Bruce Ridley, Lynn Colbert, Les Corbett, Leonard Ketchum, J.D. Harmeyer and Ed Davis.

Death Comes to J. E. Payne
John Earl Payne, 49, longtime Stephens county farmer-stockman, died in his automobile early this morning while returning from Oklahoma City. Payne complained to his wife of being too tired to drive as they came through Marlow and she relieved him at the wheel. Death, which followed shortly, about 1:30 a.m. was attributed to a heart attack.
Payne, who was born January 3, 1904, in Duncan, lived at his ranch 14 miles east of Duncan.
Survivors are the widow, Gladys; a daughter, Mrs. Virginia Strain of Duncan route 4, and a son, Tommy, 10, of the home address.
Other survivors are a brother, Carl of route 4, and three sisters, Mrs. Virginia Harden of Duncan route 4 and Mrs. Vera Young and Mrs. Louise Birnie, both of Roswell, N.M.
The service will be at 2:30 p.m. Sunday at the West Side Church of Christ with Orrin Otley, minister, officiating. Burial will be in the Duncan Cemetery under the direction of Grantham Funeral Home.

Ken Harvey writes that "Her mother died following her birth and she was taken in by her grandmother Mary E. Mounts. She used to call her "Mama" as she was the only mother she ever knew. Her father always paid her expenses. Her hair was carefully cut off by her father when it was medically advised. She was suffering from a fever or something. It was evidently very beautiful hair and it was preserved. Unfortunately the hair disappeared following her father's second marriage. Her grandmother used to take it out and wash it every year. In those days it was quite valuable. The children greatly resented the second wife who they suspected sold the hair."

She was a 1924 graduate of Duncan, Oklahoma, High School.

Ken shows that she was married to a Charles Bernie, and that they had an infant that was born around 1924 that died at about one year of age.

Her death certificate, viewable online at FamilySearch.org, Texas Deaths, 1890-1976, shows that she was the widow of Charles Birnie. A Charles Birnie (Jr.?) was the informant. Her usual residence was listed as Roswell, New Mexico.

BIOGRAPHICAL TEXT: I was told that Sylvia Couch worked as a telephone operator in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma before and for a little while after she married. She was a strong Christian woman and taught sunday school at church most of her adult life. She was Southern Baptist. She was a farmer/rancher's wife. From 1921 to 1948-49 her father Aubrey Payne lived with her. She never had any children because she and Woodrow were cousins. When she died, she left everything she had to her nieces and nephews. She was a good a decent woman with no real vices. James Avery Couch gave Woodrow & Sylvia the 1/2 acre in Donna, Texas when he and Sylvia were married. It was a real small house. Then after Woodrow and Sylvia went back to Davidson, Oklahoma circa 1932. Sylvia moved to the Couch Farm once owned by her father-in-law. In March James Avery Couch, Woodrow's father died and left him the family farm. In September of 1934 he had to sell the place to pay off debt. They moved back to Hidalgo County. Sylvia and Woodrow had to sell the Couch Family farm in Davidson Oklahoma to pay off bills, so they rented a farm in south Texas in the Rio Grande Valley in the general area of Edinburg and Donna, they would live here until 1939. Near the end of 1939 or very early 1940, Sylvia and her husband Woodrow Wilson Couch moved to a farm in Bailey County Texas, near the city of Muleshoe, in West Texas. Life was very good for them here. They stayed in this area 25 years. In 1952 Woodrow Wilson Couch was elected as a Bailey County Commissioner. They left the county in 1965, going to Clairette, Erath County, Texas. Woodrow was in the Democratic Party when he was a County Commissioner. Clairette, on State Highway 6 some fifteen miles southeast of Stephenville in southeastern Erath County, was established when the Texas Central Railroad was constructed through the area in the early 1880s. The community was named for a popular brand of soap. In 1940 it had 275 residents, five businesses, several churches, and a post office. Changes in agriculture and transportation patterns subsequently reduced the town's prosperity. From 1968 until 1990 its population was estimated at fifty-five. The 1984 county highway map showed a church, a community hall, and three businesses at Clairette. It is due south of Fort Worth. It was here that Sylvia and Woodrow purchased a ranch in 1965. She resided in Sunset, Montague County, Texas 1966. She died in the hospital: Bowie Memorial Hospital of Acute Myocardial Infarction according to Dr. H.Lorain Evans, M.D. Like so many others in our family she is buried in Davidson, Oklahoma at the Davidson cemetery, her funeral was handled by: Burgess-Fry Funeral Home of 201 West Walnut Street in Bowie, Texas. June 11, 1991. She was 85 years old. She was a grand lady and a good person. You would have liked her.

Lewis was named after David Lewis Adair who was dating a fellow resident of his parent's rented house (corner of 10th and Main, Duncan, OK.). David was so pleased when he was told falsely by the girl that the new baby was being named after him that he purchased a pair of shoes for the child. The gift was gratefully accepted. The name was probably shortened as there was a David L. Payne well known in Oklahoma history (a Yankee captain boomer involved in scandal).

1932 - Attended Ardmore High School.

1933 - In January, he moved to Lefors, Texas, to live with his aunt Pearl for the rest of the academic year. He went to the local High School. He was described on arrival as coming "from Ardmore with a fine [report] card." He immediately became a reporter on the school newspaper 'The Pirate' and gained a schoolwide reputation as a poet and orator.

1934-Graduated from Duncan High School.

1936-8 Began a daily journal which he was to regularly write up for one year. Went to work with a Tulsa barnstormer, Earl Field, and learned aircraft engines on the job. He earned about five dollars a week. He was living with his parents in Duncan.

1943-45 Aircraft Maintenance Supervisor for Government Flight School, Stillwater, Oklahoma. In 1945, Lewis, his wife Lunora, and their oldest daughter, Robin were living at 511 Hester Street.

1945-46 Self employed, buying and selling surplus wartime aircraft. In the June 7, 1998 Stillwater NewsPress, Steve Clark wrote that for a short time right after World War II, Stillwater had its own "air force...the warplanes-475 bombers and fighters began arriving at Searcy Field in 1945 to be parked until the government could figure out how to dispose of them...All 475 planes were bought by one man: Paul Mantz, the famous air racer and movie stunt pilot who died in the 1960s during the filming of THE FLIGHT OF THE PHOENIX....Mantz paid $55,426 for the whole batch, making most, if not all of his money back by draining the planes's fuel tanks and selling the thousands of gallons of 100-octane gasoline. He kept 12 of the warbirds for himself...Most of the leftovers were sold to a scrap dealer from Wichita, though a few others escaped destructions..." Lewis Payne purchased one of the seven P-51 Mustangs in partnership with another man. At some stage his partner crashed and was killed. Lewis turned his share to the insurance money over to the grateful widow...In 1988 there are 51 of these aircraft still flying and each is worth about hald a million dollars.

Obituary

"Lewis Adair Payne, 84 was a longtime breeder of Arabian horses in addition to being an aircraft mechanic. He was also a retired expatriate engineer.

He died Tuesday, 18 August 1998, at Stillwater Medical Center. Cremation arrangements are under the direction of Strode Funeral Home. Private intermment and service will be at a later time in Duncan.

Payne was born March 15, 1914, in Duncan, to Marvin Walter Payne and Grace Ellen Gentry; both the children of Oklahoma Pioneers. He married Lunora McWethy in 1943. She is the daughter of William Meade McWethy and Ethel Arretha Phenis both formerly of Stillwater.

In the last 37 years of his life, Lewis devoted himself to the breeding of Arabian horses in the Stillwater area. His objective was achieve classical perfection in both body type and movement. His artist's eye later resulted in national recognition from a minority interested in the preservation breeding of this fine horse-celebrated by the 4th century B.C. Greeks in the marble statuary of the Parthenon frieze. At considerable cost to him he did not allow the untutored requirements of the market to damage the historic bloodlines of his horses. For a long time he stood alone.

Originally an aircraft mechanic in the later barnstorming days, Lewis was to instruct students in aircraft maintenance for the National Defense Training School during WWII at Searcy Field, the Stillwater airport. From there he spent nine years with his young family in Saudi Arabia working for Aramco. He later became an engineer for Philco-Ford with whom he worked all over the world.

He was a man who expanded his formal university classes with very extensive reading and travel. He last journeyed around the world at the age of 80. His curiousity was wide and his interests were cosmopolitan.

He was predeceased by two brothers, Claude Chadwick Payne and Marvin Walter Payne and one sister, Mary Olive Thompson. Survivors include his wife of fifty-two years, Lunora; two daughters; Robin White of Joplin, Missouri and Penny Harvey of Glencoe, OK; and two grandsons Bracken White of San Francisco, CA and Gentry White of Columbia, MO and grand-daughter Anne Marie Busse of Joplin, Mo.

Memorials may be made to the Stillwater Airport Memorial Museum."

Lewis's ashes were buried on a hill, under an oak tree, with a view of Hell Creek below. The burial site was on the land his grandfather Sam homesteaded and where he himself grew up during his teenage years. There was a brief informal religious ceremony conducted by son-in-law Tom White. Afterwords a picnic was served at the East Wing of the Stephens County Fairgrounds.

He liked Pow wows and "good" music. His favorite cigarette was Camel, cigar White Owl, drink Gin, sport football, and his favorite authors were the poets Byron and Whitman.

He was 54 when he died. The funeral services were held at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Andarko. His pall bearers were Joe Mayfield, Oral Jackson, Glenn Payne, Ed Monasco, Windell Haley and Homer Strong.

On 7 June 1991, an "Order Approving the Final Account, Determining Heirship and Distributing Estate" was executed in the District Court within and for Stephens County, State of Oklahoma." It was noted that he died testate on the 1st day of February, 1990 while an actual bona fide resident of Marlow, Oklahoma and that on the date of his death he left to survive him as his sole and only heirs at law the following named persons, and none other, to-wit:

Service will be at 2 p.m. Monday at the First United Methodist Church of Marlow with the Rev. Charles Nordean officiating. Burial will be at Mar-low Cemetery under the direction of the Callaway-Smith-Cobb Funeral Home.
Mr. Payne was born April 10,1912, in Marlow. He graduated from Marlow High School and Oklahoma A&M. A rancher and farmer, he was a veteran of World War II, serving with the U.S Navy, and was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Marlow. He married Billie Burrow on April 5, 1943, in Lindsay.
Survivors include his wife of the home near Marlow; a brother, W.T. "Bill" Payne of Fort Worth, Texas; a sister, Marylyn Wade of Marlow; and three cousins, Robert T. Lyle of Duncan and Mary Lou Mahaffey and Charles McKinney, both of Marlow.

She was born May 6, 1912 in Butler, Okla. to William H. and Pearl Burgess Payne. She married Cleatis Odell Steele, June 23, 1929 in Moorewood, Okla. He left this life and went home June 27, 1994.

She was a resident of East Carbon City since 1944.

In her early years, mom loved to knit and crochet. She loved to sew and make dresses for her daughters. Mom also loved to travel all over to see the sights. She loved worked in her iris and rose garden. She loved having her family and grandchildren come to visit her. Next to her family the love of her life were her pets.

She will be dearly missed by all who knew her. Her suffering is over. Now she walks with the angels.

Linda Miller wrote that Jack died in a car accident when she was around eight years old (circa 1960). He ran off a bridge. It was probably around Hagerman, New Mexico, somewhere between Artesia and Roswell.

Linda Miller writes that Scott died when young..."Their mother sent them back to the house from where she was working in the field and they (my dad and Scott) went down into a washed out creek bed and found a kind of sand cave that had been washed out from when the creek flooded. There they started digging. Scott the older one being farther in when it caved in completely covering him. My father dug him out where he could see his face and blood was trickling out of his mouth so he ran for help. The cave-in had killed him instantly by breaking his neck. For years my father spoke of him as if he were younger...... Before my father died I had been doing research and realized Scott was older and told him....what a shocking thing for a young boy of five.

He had a mild form of webbed fingers.

He had a surveying company and he worked on contract for insurance companies. Lewis Payne worked for him for a while.

He later committed suicide.

Member of the Chickasaw Nation. Her father, Thomas Hamilton Payne (Original Enrollee #3686) was a Chickasaw by blood.

It is believed she was named after the popular Scottish Folk ballad, Annie Laurie. Her nickname, "Roonie" was also a product of popular culture, based on the Little Annie Rooney comic strip that ran during the depression.

Anna Laura was baptized in 1922, her sponsors being her Aunt and Uncle, Mr. and Mrs. J.R. Sparks. According to a brochure from the Church of the Assumption, Duncan, commemorating Religious Heritage Day on Sunday, June 28, 1992, "Both sides of Anna Laura (Roonie) Strong's family history intertwines in their settlement of Duncan before the 1900's. Her Uncle John and Aunt Annie Sparks O'Neil's home, presently the Phil Leonard home, was used regularly for masses before the first church was built in 1909. Roonie attended the first parochial school, "Joan of Arc", which had been built by one of the outstanding parish priests, Fr. J.A. Garvey, and run by Sisters of Divine Providence."

After their father left home, Bessie had trouble making enough money to support her family. When Anna Laura was 15, she and Fay were sent to Saint Elizabeth Academy, an Orphanage and Boarding School for Native American Girls in Purcell, Oklahoma. Anna Laura remembers the long train ride being frightening. Although the distance from Duncan to Purcell was not particulary long, it was a freight train and made numerous long stops. It was very late at night before they finally arrived, and they had long since finished the sack lunch their mother had made them. Lois joined them at the school when she was old enough. Both Anna Laura and Faye graduated from St. Elizabeth's. Lois returned to Duncan to live with Anna Laura, and she graduated from Duncan High School.

Anna Laura's graduation was on the 26 of May in 1931. Her diploma was signed by Rev. Jacques Van Castel, Sister Adelhelma, Sister Theresa and Sister Lena. The nuns were members of the Sisters of St. Francis. Sister Lena had arrived at St. Elizabeth between 1889 and 1890.

Sisters Adelhelma and Lena were from Germany. Sister Lena worked in the kitchen and Roonie had been assigned to help her. She recalls the day Sister Lena accidentally dropped her rosary while cooking and loudly proclaimed, "Mein Lord and Mein Gott! I dropped my Jesus in the Soup." Sister Lena presented this same rosary to Anna Laura as a graduation gift, in memory of the work and faith they had shared. When Roonie's children were all school age, she returned to work. She was the head cook at first the parochial school in Duncan, and later at Duncan Junior High School. She held this position for approximately 20 years.

Roonie and her sisters Fay and Lois remained close friends throughout their adult lifes, often traveling together.

Anna Laura "Roonie" Payne Strong, 90, of Duncan, died Wednesday, Sept. 15, 2004, in her home. Funeral will be at 10 a.m. Saturday in Assumption Catholic Church with the Rev. Victor John officiating. Burial will be in Duncan City Cemetery, under direction of Don Grantham Funeral Home.

A rosary service will be held at 7 p.m. Friday in the funeral home chapel. Roonie was born Oct. 23, 1913, in Alma (sic) to Thomas H. and Bessie Gentry Payne. She married Homer Richard Strong on Oct. 23, 1931 (sic), in Waurika. He preceded her in death on Sept. 19, 1990.

Roonie was a graduate of St. Elizabeth's Academy in Purcell in 1931. She later attended Duncan Business School. She was employed by the Duncan Public School System for 28 years before retiring.

She was a member of Assumption Catholic Church, where she sang in the choir for 60 years and was a member of the Ladies' Altar Society. She was also a member of the Fatima Study Club and was a citizen of the Chickasaw Nation.

She was a wonderful homemaker, wife, mother and grandmother.

Survivors include five sons and spouses: Charles and Pat Strong of Edinburg, Texas, Bill and Betty Strong of Yukon, Tom and Vickie Strong of Laveen, Ariz., and John and Brenda Strong, and Paul David and Jane Strong, all of Duncan; a daughter, Caroline Brasher of Duncan; a sister, Lois Marie Payne Hanna of Oklahoma City; 22 grandchildren and 33 great-grandchildren.

She was also preceded in death by her parents; a daughter, Theresa Marie Rutledge; a great-granddaughter, Alexandra Kathrine Brasher in 1994; and a sister, Fay Pierce Yeager. Bearers will be her grandsons.Memorial contributions may be made to Chisholm Trail Hospice, P.O. Box 2000, Duncan, OK 73534-2000.

Purcell, Aug. 14-Historic St. Elizabeth's convent, which for 60 years played a vital part in cultural development of Indian territory and early growth and education of Oklahoma, is closing its doors September 1 for lack of funds.

Founded in February, 1888, one year before Oklahoma was opened to settlement and barely a year after Purcell was established as a junction point on the Santa Fe, it is one of Oklahoma's most famous old schools.

The spacious, roomy, two-storied frame building, set in a grassy plot with a peaceful background of slender poplars, elms and cedars, is still a thing of considerable beauty. For many years it was the only educational landmark in an unsettled area, and the sight of students playing about its grounds, supervised by the black-robed nuns, against the bright southwestern skies, has become familiar to nearly all Oklahomans who have lived here any length of time.

When St. Elizabeth's convent was founded, in 1888, Purcell was a part of the Chickasaw nation of the old Indian territory, and the gateway to the great ranching empire which lay to the west and south. The country then was all pastureland, heavily wooded and a ranch of 10,000 to 20,000 acres was commonplace. Most of the settlers were Chickasaws, but here were also Choctaw families, and a good many white settlers. All were eager to send their children to school and the news that St. Elizabeth's convent had opened in Purcell was welcomed far and wide. Families packed their children and brought them to board and room at the convent, or if there was no space there, boarded them in homes and they attended day school.

Three eager young nuns, all now dead, of the Order of St. Francis, made their way west from Philadelphia and arrived in Purcell on Feb. 14, 1888. They were the late Sister Barbara, Sister Mary Joachim and Sister Patricia. At the time there was under construction a three-room frame building on the same lot where the Benedictine priests had built a one-room church. Sunday services were conducted in the church which on week days was converted into two school rooms by hanging a heavy carpet to form a partition. In one room a Miss Fritch taught the boys, whil in the other room Sister Mary Patricia taught the girls. By November, however, the new three-room frame building was completed and enrolment consisted of 120 pupils. Ages of these pupils ranged from 6 to 18 years. Soon, there were 25 boarders, then 50. The one-room frame building was used for boys.

Money for the grounds, buildings and teachers was paid for by Miss Katherine Drexel of the wealthy Philadelphia Drexel family. She had become interested in educating the Indians through the efforts of Father Vincent Jolly, O.S.B., who taught at the Sacred Heart academy situated in unsettled wilderness in what is now Pottawatomie county. Father Jolly, accompanied by Father William Capital, took turns in coming to Purcell to hold services. Father Jolly told Miss Drexel of the Indian boys and girls who needed educational opportunities, and described the great wilderness, which pioneers were still to conquer. One church was unable to bear the expense. But Miss Drexel could and did for 60 years.

Miss Drexel furnished money for the grounds, buildings and early support, and a new building site was selected in 1891 by the Very Rev. Ignatius Jean, Benedictine priest, while Rev. F. Steven, director of the Indian bureau, gave the plans of the building to Miss Drexel. At her instigation, Archbishop Ryan of Philadelphia designated the Sisters of St. Francis of the Philadelphia Foundation, Mother House in Glen Riddle, Pa., to take charge of the mission. Miss Drexel also offered to pay of the sister's support.

In an area known as Love's pasture, named for the late Robert Love, Purcell's founder, who proved to be very helpful to the new school, ground was broken and the building erected which still stands today. On the second floor near the chapel is a bronze plaque dedicated to the founder, the late Father Vincent Jolly.

In the summers of 1889 and 1890, three more sisters, Sister Valentine, Sister Lena, and Sister Ludemiller joined the little bands of nuns and in 1891, Sister Mary Teresa, who is now the only one of the early group left, came to teach.

Sister Teresa, now the Sister Superior of St. Elizabeth's convent, is 80. She is small of stature, being only 4 feet 9 inches in height and is slender and frail. Born in Philadelphia Ja. 29, 1868, she was an only child of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Caterson, also natives of Philadelphia. In May, 1888, she took her vows at Our Lady of Angels convent at Glen Riddle, Pa., and taught one year in Wilmington, Pa. The death of her mother the next year left her free for her appointment ot the new convent in the Indian territory. On the way to the new town of Purcell, she has two companions, twos sisters who were going to the missions near Pawhuska in the Osage nation. She she came alone from St. Louis and arrived at Purcell on Sept. 4, 1891, just in time to see the ground being broken for the present site.

Government support by which the Indian girls' tuition was paid in part by the government was withdrawn in 1932......(Causing the sisters) to run the institution on practically no income except from Miss Drexel. For some time the sisters kept the girls without government aid from their own slender resources as teachers. Continued maintenance was impossible during these depressing days. This meant that the girls representing the Chickasaw, Choctaw, Cherokee and Pottawatomie tribes as well as others in all probability would be deprived of an eduation.

However, through the mediation of George C. Wells, at that time supervisor of Indian education, Oklahoma district, and Chief Dwight, chief of the Choctaw nation, a contract of 10 was received. But things have changed during the "war" years. There is a scarcity of teachers and enrollment is down. All in all, it seemed best to close the doors.

So historic St. Elizabeth is closing its doors. And good little Sister Superior Teresea will teach no more. She will take a long rest. She would like to spend the rest of her life in Purcell but will go where the church decrees.

Dora Fay Pierce Yeager

Dora Fay Pierce Yeager, 87, of Oklahoma City died Thursday, March 7, 2002, in Oklahoma City.

Service was held at 9 a.m. Saturday at the Assumption Catholic Church in Duncan, with the Rev. Donald Wolf officiating. Burial was in the Duncan Cemetery under the direction of Don Grantham Funeral Home. Mrs. Yeager was born on Jan. 30, 1915 , in Duncan to Thomas H. and Bessie Gentry Payne.

She married Edward R. Pierce, who preceded her in death in 1951. She then married George Yeager in 1965. He preceded her in death in 1977.

She was a homemaker and also worked as a bookkeeper.

She was a member of Assumption Catholic Church. She is survived by one daughter, Lynn Moroney of Oklahoma City; two sisters, Anna Laura Strong of Duncan and Lois Payne Hanna of Oklahoma City. She was preceded in death by a brother, Thomas H. Payne III; a sister, Patty Gay Payne; and her parents. Grandchildren include Siobhan Moroney of Highland Park, Ill.; and Tracy Moroney of Studio City, Calif. Great-grandchildren are Michael Moroney and Anne Green of Highland Park, Ill.

She was preceded in death by a brother, Thomas H. Payne III; and a sister, Patty Gay Payne.

Lois (Marie) Payne Hanna

Lois (Marie) Payne Hanna died November 20, 2013 at the Lakes Nursing Facility in Oklahoma City, after a long struggles with Alzheimer's disease and a short battle with congestive heart failure.

She was born February 10, 1920 to Thomas Hardwick Payne and Bessie Bird Payne at Duncan, Okla. Though her early formative years were spent at St. Elizabeth's School in Purcell, Okla.; and education provided to her from the altruism of the Chickasaw tribe, she graduated from Duncan High School in 1938. Some years later she moved to Oklahoma City where she became a lifelong resident. After the War, she enrolled in the Oklahoma City School of Law (currently OCU) where she met her future husband, James Cullen Hanna. As one relative put it, "she studied to be an attorney, but married one instead." In the early 1960's she secured employment with the architecture firm of Coston, Frankfurt, Short (now Frankfurt Short Brusa) and rose from a secretarial position to retire in the 1990's as a member of the firm's board of directors. It was from this career position that Mrs. Hanna became a long lasting member of Executive Women Incorporated (EWI). Lois served in many capacities during her lengthy membership in EWI including that of president. Association with this organization provided her with the opportunity to travel and cement lifelong friendships. In later life she fondly recalled the places and people she had the pleasure to know.

While her sharp and penetrating mind permitted her to explore a keen interest in myriad of subjects, her main focus was on just a few. Aside from her whole family,---her offspring, her siblings, her sibling's offspring, in-laws and everything in-between---which she cherished above all else, her great passions in life were music, literature, history, Sooner football and all things Oklahoman.

Her enthusiasm for music and above all, opera brought her great happiness. She delighted in being a proud patron of the Oklahoma City Symphony, holding season tickets for more than thirty consecutive years. Last year Mrs. Hanna was honored when the Chickasaw tribe recognized her as a senior member of the tribe and presented her with a brooch.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Thomas Hardwick (sic, s/b Hamilton) Payne and Bessie Bird Payne; her husband, James Cullen Hanna; sisters, Anna Laura Strong, Dora Faye Yeager, Patricia Gabriela (Patty Gay) Payne; and a brother, Thomas Hardwick Payne.

She is survived by her three sons, Fred Hanna, Tom Hanna and John Hanna; a daughter-in-law Gabrielle Hanna; grandsons, Brandon Hanna, Travis Hanna, and Cameron Hanna, children of Fred and Gabrielle; and a great-grandson, Jack Hanna, son of Brandon Hanna.

She will be forever remembered for the warm tender kindness that she shined on those that were closest to her and the unique glow of genuine charity with which she embraced all that were lucky enough to be close to her for however momentary.

She will be dearly missed by all those who knew, and therefore, loved her.

Patty Gay died when she was about eight years old. The day before she died, after six weeks of illness, she said to her sister Fay "I am so tired of being tired."

Charles Strong reports that she had a leaky valve in her heart. It would be something fairly easy to fix by today's standards. It might have been something that could have been fixed even in the 1930's, had the family had the resources available to them.

They were quite poor however. Charles reported that money was so tight that one winter Bessie got behind on her utility payments, and the company threatened to cut off their power. Patty's doctor intervened, telling the company that they would be responsible for her death if the power was cut off.

It was recorded that P.J., as he was called, died at the age of 2 years and 7 days.

Paul J. Payne passed away July 14, 2008. He was born to Harry C. and Caroline Payne on November 21, 1922. He served in the Marine Corps during WWII. Paul was lovingly known as "P.J." and "Greatdad". He retired from Coastal States/Valero. Paul was a creative, innovator whose inventions brought fun, joy, laughter and happiness to those with whom he shared them. His daily home and work lives were also evident of his innovative nature.

He is preceded in death by wife Pansy Payne, son Paul G. Payne, and brother J.R. Payne. He is survived by his son, Phillip (Becky) Payne; daughters, Klyda (Jerry) Gerber, Yvette (Ron) Schroeder, Zoe (Chuck McKinney) Payne; son by heart adoption, Danny Talley; Brother W.L. Willie Lee "Bill" Payne, 86 of Duncan, Okla., died on Wednesday, August 3, 2011, at Duncan Regional Hospital in Duncan.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, August 6th at Don Grantham Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Randy Southerland officiating. Interment will follow at Resthaven Memorial Gardens.

Born Saturday, December 20, 1924 in Duncan, he was the son of Harry Carl and Caroline "Carrie" (Cover) Payne. He married Betty Jo Wilson on August 19, 1948 at Wichita Falls, Texas. She preceded him in death on Nov. 30, 1996.

He was a veteran of World War II and a Pearl Harbor survivor, serving in the United States Marine Corps.

As a lifetime farmer and rancher, he was a member of the Cattleman's Association, Stephens County Alfalfa Hay Growers Association, American Legion and The Pearl Harbor Survivors Association.

Surviving family includes daughter, Lee Johnson and David Senger of Katy, Texas, a grandson, Specialist Chris Johnson of Monterey, Calif., brother-in-law, Earl Wilson of Loco, Okla., sisters-in-law and spouses, Loretta and Kenneth McCalmant, Helen and Charles Allen, Dorothy Wilson and Opal Wilson all of Duncan and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was also preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Junior Payne and Paul Payne.

Pallbearers will be: Bill Bunn, Lyndel Strain, David Hale, Jerry Allen, Butch Allen, Larry McCalmant.

Frances Loraine Dubose Jan. 25, 1926 - Dec. 23, 2001 LIVINGSTON, Texas - Graveside services for Frances Loraine Dubose, 75, of Bryan and formerly of Livingston, are set for 2:30 p.m. Thursday at Eureka Cemetery in Corsicana. The Rev. Lee Poe will officiate. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to noon Thursday at the Cochran Funeral Home Chapel in Livingston. Mrs. Dubose died Sunday in St. Joseph Regional Health Center in Bryan. She was born in Duncan, Okla., and was a member of the First Baptist Church in Livingston. She was preceded in death by her husband, Clayton Dubose. Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Eddie Hoyt and Tex Ann Drath of Bryan; a stepson and daughter-in-law, Roddy and Linda Dubose of Houston; five grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

Former Duncan Police Capt. John Walter Payne, 66, Rt. 6, Duncan, died Sunday, April 23, 1995 in a Duncan hospital. Service will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday in Don Grantham Funeral Home Chapel, with the Rev. J. D. Young officiating. Burial will be in Duncan Cemetery.
He was born Feb. 21, 1929 on the Payne Ranch east of Duncan, to James E. and Edna M. Surginer Payne.
On July 5, 1955 he married Bertie Geneva Hopkins at Henrietta, Texas. He was a retired captain of the Duncan Police Department and a past member of the FOP and National Rifle Association.
Survivers include his wife of the home; a son and daughter-in-law, Johnny and Kathy Payne of Duncan; his mother of Duncan; and two grandchildren, Dillon Flippen and Caleb Flippen, both of Duncan.
Bearers will be Bill Hines, Rex Ross, Dale Anderson, John Hilburn, Jerry Wilson and Delbert Rhodes.
