Paul was born in the village of Brandlyn, near the town of Dacice, in Jihlava County, Moravia. He came to America at the age of nine with his parents, Pavel and Marie Riha Buzek. They settled first in Red Oak, Iowa, moving to Saline County, Nebraska in 1870, taking up a homestead on the N1/2 NE1/4 of Section 18 in Turkey Creek Township. Paul went to rural school district #59. His teachers were Albert and William Young, Walter Howarth, and Mary Doyle. The school term was 60 to 80 days. When there was work to be done in the fields, the schools were closed. She attended rural school district #85 in Saline County. As the oldest daughter, Alba helped her parents care for her younger siblings while she was growing up. Later she worked as a store clerk in Milligan, Tobias, and Santa Monica, California. She also was employed as a cook at the Friend Annex.

For a while, Anna lived with her sister and brother-in-law, Anna and Ed Placek. She also lived with Mildred and Lowell Frankforter in Los Angeles. She purchased her own home in Milligan in 1948. A lover of flowers, she also cared for her many fruit trees and shrubs. She enjoyed sharing her flowers with others for banquets, graduations, and Memorial Day. (Milligan, p 224).

Notes:

Attended School District #85 in Saline County. Known as Bob or BB. He operated a truck line in partnership with Emil Havel for many years, hauling livestock for local ranchers and beer for Joe Jicha. After he suffered a stroke, he and Anna moved to Lincoln to be near their daughter and son-in-law, Irene and John Gray. (Milligan, p 224).

Notes:

Lew attended a one room rural school, with one teacher in charge of eight grades. After school he and his brothers and sisters helped with the many chores vital to running a farm. On Sundays, he and his brothers hunted rabbits and squirrels. They also trapped civit cats, possums and weasels for their pelts.

As a young man, he worked on his parents farm, as well as working as a hired hand for his brothers and neighbors. Later he farmed for himself. He travelled north into Wyoming, Montana and Canada with harvest crews and doing odd jobs. In Montana he worked as a cook. In Canada, he worked for a veterinarian. He also did carpentry work.

Lew and his brother Bill had a thirty gallon still during the prohibition. Deciding it was too much work, they later gave it up.

Lew remodeled a home for his sister Alma, and lived with her for a while. He moved back to the farm after a while, where no women could interfere with his housekeeping. He lived nearby his nephew, Dean Placek.

Lew was a good cook and gardener, and was always surroundeded by his cats and dogs. He died on the farm shortly after his 90th birthday. (Milligan, p 226).

Attended rural school in District #85. Engaged in farming his entire life. He farmed Geneva, Exeter and Friend area. He enjoyed raising livestock. His spare time was spent hunting and fishing. (Milligan, p 225).

Ladislav and Milo were twin sons born to Paul and Anna Braum Buzek. Ladislav, the larger and stronger of the two passed away shortly after birth. He is buried at the Kasak Cemetery.

Notes:

Milo attended rural school District #85 in Saline County, and was one of three children in his family that graduated from High School. He briefly attended the University of Nebraska, but an appendix operation curtailed his education and he returned to Milligan. He worked as a meat cutter and later operated a grocery store. In 1942, he and Mildred moved to a farm sound to Milligan. Later they moved to Lincoln, where Milo worked at Cushman Motors and Mildred worked at the University. The family lived in Lincoln until 1969, when they went back to the farm he loved. Milo passed away at his home of a heart attack, and is buried in the Bohemian National Cemetery. (Milligan, p 228).

Her family remembers her delicious cherry kolaches (Milligan, p 272).

Born in a soddie, Edward graduated from Exeter High School and taught country school for one year. After that, he worked in the Milligan lumber yard.

During the First World War, he served in France. General John J. Pershing was reviewing the troops and paused in front of Edward, asking him where he was from. Edward replied, "Nebraska, Sir." "They grow them tall in Nebraska, don't they?" said General Pershing and walked on. Edward was 6'5 inches, and stood out among the rest of the doughboys. (Milligan, pps 251-252).

He was a former school teacher, and worked for the Elgin Watch company and later for the Nebraska State Library.

Betty Jean Kroon, age 82, of Lincoln, died on Monday, Sept. 9, 2013 in Lincoln. She was born on June 23, 1931 in Milligan to William and Lydia (Horlivy) Buzek. She graduated from Milligan High School [in 1948]. Betty married Larry Glen Kroon, he preceded her in death on July 28, 1998. She was the apartment manager at Blevins Apartments from 1964 to 1996.
Betty is survived by her sons, Curtis (Leslie Stimbert) Kroon of Lincoln; Calvin (Mary) Kroon of Roca; granddaughter, Heidi Kroon of Lincoln. She was preceded in death by her husband and her parents.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m., with a 7 p.m. rosary service, on Wednesday, Sept. 11, all at Wyuka Funeral Home. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10 a.m. on Thursday, Sept. 12, at St. Mary's Catholic Church, 1420 K Street, with Father Doug Dietrich officiating. Ray lived near Milligan his entire life. He attended grade school in District #85 and graduated from Milligan High School in 1939. He entered the army during World War II on September 4, 1942 and was honorably discharged on October 13, 1945, serving inthe European Theatre, and seeing action in Africa, Italy, Corsica, France and Germany. After returning home, he met his future bride at a dance in Ohiowa. They were blessed with 36 years of married life and two children. His chosen occupatoin was farming which he dearly loved. He was an active and proud member of the American Legion Post #240 Milligan and the VFW Post #7102 of Geneva (Milligan, 1988-2008. p. 130).

Raymond married Enola Langhorst on 6 Jun 1947 in Fillmore County, Nebraska. Allen Ray Stych was born at Ohiowa, Nebraska to Edward & Velma (Buzek) Stych on July 22, 1937. He passed away at his home in Hebron, Nebraska on April 24, 2019 at the age of 81 years, 9 months and 2 days.

Allen was baptized and confirmed as an adult at Trinity Lutheran Church in Bruning, Nebraska on December 28, 1952. He graduated from Bruning High School in 1955.

He worked for Hinrichs & Son Hardware in Bruning for 31 years. He was also a partner in ownership of B & Z Oil in Hebron for many years selling petroleum products to many people in the Thayer & Fillmore County areas.

In his spare time, Allen enjoyed hunting, fishing, and working in his yard. He also enjoyed visiting with his many friends.

Allen was preceded in death by his parents and his brother Everett Stych.

Left to remember him are sister-in-law Eileen Stych; nieces Pamela Benson and Linda Troester; great niece Jaime Troester; and many relatives and friends.

She worked at the Lincoln County Assessor's office, and after moving to California she became the personnel manager of Sawyer of Napa, a sheepskin tannery and shearling coat manufacturer. Funeral services for Roma will be 10:00 a.m. Saturday, March 5, 2016, at the Milligan Auditorium in Milligan, Nebraska, with Chaplain Shari Lagemann officiating. Burial will follow the funeral service at the Bohemian National Cemetery, Milligan, Nebraska.

Public visitation will begin Friday from 1 pm until 8 pm at the Farmer & Son Funeral Home - Kotas Chapel in Milligan. Memorials are directed to the Milligan Auditorium.

Roma Beth Bigelow, of Milligan, Nebraska passed away on March 2, 2016 at the Friend Manor at the age of 79 years 7 months and 27 days. She was born on July 6, 1936 in Geneva, Nebraska to Mildred H. (Hines) Buzek and Milo E. Buzek. She was a member of the Methodist Church.
Roma spent her childhood on a farm in Tobias, surrounded by her loving parents, siblings, cousins and many aunts and uncles. They were a very close family, and spent a lot of their time together at many family gatherings. She graduated from Milligan High in Nebraska and attended the Lincoln School of Commerce.

It was in Lincoln where she met the love of her life, and very strong willed husband, Henry "Hank" Bigelow. Together they wed, and Roma relocated to New Hampshire, Henry's hometown, at the age of 19. This was a daunting task for Roma as she had never been out of the state of Nebraska. To this union, four children were born; Julie, Laura, Beth and Mark. Roma adapted quite well and enjoyed the new experiences of seafood, winding roads and the woods of New England. In 1969 the family headed west, relocating to Napa Valley, California where Roma settled in her new home in the River Park Estates. Although Roma never learned to swim, she now lived on the Napa River, complete with a 31-foot boat and dock in her backyard. Once again, Roma graciously took full advantage of yet another new experience, embracing the valley and all the excitement the wine country offered in the 1970's and 80's. Roma loved to cook?she taught herself how to make gourmet meals and loved to be in charge of catering many meals for the yacht club and marinas. Roma also became an accomplished first mate and fisherman; usually very lucking in landing the largest and heaviest salmon, grouper, or whatever was the catch of the day, much to her husbands chagrin. During this period in the Napa Valley she also worked as a Personnel Manager for Sawyer Tanning of Napa as well as Ray Burlison Real Estate.

After retiring in 1989, she and Hank moved to Florida where they purchased their dream home and dreamboat, which then named "Abracadabra". They spent their time with their good friends at the Hernando Beach Yacht Club where Roma prepared countless feasts for their many parties and functions.

Roma also was an accomplished seamstress, in her younger years, sewing most of the families clothing, as well as upholstering many boat cushions, etc. She loved to do crafts and helped paint and stain her husbands many woodworking projects.

Hank and Roma returned to Milligan in 2005 to spend their remaining years with their children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and her many relatives in the area. Roma was actively involved in volunteering at the library and the WWII plane crash memorial established on the north corner of Milligan. While retired in Milligan, Roma suffered from a stroke, which greatly reduced her ability to be as active as she wished, however, she continued to move ahead and take care of her husband and family.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Mildred and Milo, husband, Henry, and sister-in-laws; Betty Buzek and Joyce Kemp.

She is survived by daughters, son, spouses: Julie Pimentel, Laura (Dean) Kassik, Beth Dunlap, Mark (Becky) Bigelow; sister, brother and spouse; Merle Buzek, Kathy (Dick) Rischling: 14 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren and a host of cousins, nieces and nephews.

A Funeral Service for Kathryn will be held at the Milligan Auditorium in Milligan, Nebraska on Thursday, July 7, 2022 at 10:30 a.m. with Kim Dunker presiding.

Visitation will take place on Wednesday, July 6, 2022 at Farmer & Son Funeral Home - Kotas Chapel in Milligan, Nebraska from 1:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. with family present from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 pm.

Graveside Services will be conducted following the funeral service in the Bohemian National Cemetery in Milligan, Nebraska.

Kathryn Ann (Buzek) Rischling was born August 14th, 1941 to Milo and Mildred (Hines) Buzek. She was the third of three children. She departed this life on July 2nd, 2022 at her home surrounded by her loving family.

Kathy was raised on a farm nine miles south of Milligan. She attended rural school district #9 and graduated from Milligan High School in 1959. During her high school years, Kathy lived with her brother, Merle and sister-in-law Betty. She enjoyed spending time with her niece and nephew. After graduation, she attended Nebraska Wesleyan University for one year and then was employed at Lincoln Mutual Life Insurance until her marriage.

Kathy married Richard (Dick) Rischling on April 14th, 1962. To this union, one son and two daughters were born. Jan in 1964, Rebecca in 1965 and Kristine in 1968. They purchased a home in Milligan and resided there until her death. While raising her children, the family could be found spending much of their time making memories with both the Buzek and Rischling families. Countless days were spent with her husband and children fishing, hunting, cooking and taking small road trips. Her children had always been her pride and joy, and their future success always remained near and dear to her heart.

For the majority of her married life, Kathy was a homemaker and a devoted mother . She was an exceptionally gifted cook and baker. For many years, she worked part-time at the local grocery store, " The Food Basket" as a cashier. Kathy was actively involved in the Milligan Community. One of her greatest accomplishments was being on the Milligan History Book Committee and developing the Milligan History Books. She was also an original member of the Town and Country Women's Club, served many years on the Milligan Library board and was on the World War II Memorial Committee. In her free time, Kathy enjoyed taking trips with the "girls" to the casino where she would spend many hours at the slots enjoying laughter and unforgettable memories.

Throughout the years, Kathy and Dick kept busy chasing their 8 grandkids to numerous events and enjoyed having their home full of kids. She always took the time to play games with the grandkids and taught them how to bake her special recipes from her Czech heritage. In their later years, Kathy and Dick were blessed with 13 great grandchildren. Her greatest pastime in life was watching them all grow. She was fortunate enough to have her entire family living within fifteen miles, which resulted in daily visits from at least one of her family members. She was so proud of her family and was never shy to express how accomplished they all are.

As her health declined over the last 15 months, Kathy gained an extended group of her new "family" through her dialysis nurses and fellow patients. Although dialysis was never her favorite, she was eternally grateful for the new friendships she made.

Kathy was preceded in death by her parents Milo & Mildred Buzek; in-laws Adolf & Mary Rischling; sister, Roma (Henry) Bigelow; sister-in-law Betty Buzek; sister-in-law Arlene (James) Luzum; brother-in-law Robert Rischling, Al Kudlacek, and Dean Placek; niece, Kim Luzum and nephews Jay Luzum and Paul Placek.

Kathy is survived by her husband of 60 years, Richard; children Jan (Tammy) Rischling, Becky Vonderfecht, and Kristi (Steve) Briske all of Milligan; brother, Merle Buzek; sister-in-law Alma Placek, Irma Kudlacek, and Carolyn Rischling; grandchildren Mitchell (Kelly) Rischling, Rachel (Jared) Johnson, Dillon Rischling, Jordan (Emily) Zwickl, Megan (Jake) Johnson, Katie (Shane) Roesler, Stephanie (Riley) Bohlken, and Kylie (Wyatt) Schoenholz; great grandchildren Kash, Kyah, Maelynn, Brynnlye, Landri, Kollins, Baylor, Indi, Luke, Rhett, Colt, Baby Roesler, Dax and Whit along with numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

Warren E. Buzek, 72, passed away Jan. 6, 2013 after a long battle with pancreatic cancer. Warren was born on Dec. 28, 1940 near Milligan to Emil and Irma (Kozel) Buzek. He graduated from Lincoln High School in 1958 and is a Marine Corps veteran. He was retired from a career in law enforcement.
Survivors include brother, Byron and wife, Pat of Lincoln; sister, Norma and husband, Bill Burton of Topeka, Kan.; nieces: Denise, Kim, Lynn and Pam. Preceded in death by his wife, Verna, and parents, Emil and Irma Buzek.

Frank was born on the farm west of Milligan now occupied by Emil TUREK. He graduated from Milligan Public School in 1928 and entered farming with this father. In 1937, he went to work for the Farmers' Coop. Other employment includes working as a mechanic at BORS & BULIN Garage in Milligan and then at Bruning Air Base. He entered the service on May 29, 1943. He served in the European Theater in France and Germany with the 30th Medical Depot. He was in the battles of Normandy, Northern France and the Rhineland. After his discharge, he and his brother-in-law, Donal VAVRA worked part time as trappers. In 1947, they received over $1,000 for mink pelts. He worked full-time for Fillmore County as a road maintenance operator and volunteer firefighter (Milligan, p 293).

Dennis Belohlavy pointed out that his date of birth on the SSDI was instead 14 Dec 1914. It is not known whether this date, or the date of 24 Dec 1910 cited in Milligan Nebraska book, is accurate.

Frank married Marie Helen Oliva on 21 Dec 1939 in Geneva, Fillmore County, Nebraska. Marie was born on 18 Jun 1918 in Tobias, Saline County, Nebraska; died on 14 Mar 2012 in Friend, Saline County, Nebraska; was buried in Bohemian National Cemetery (Milligan South), Milligan, Fillmore County, Nebraska. Ernest married Irma Nohava on 12 Dec 1940 in Belleville, Republic County, Kansas. Irma (daughter of James Nohava and Agnes Sredl) was born on 16 Nov 1915 in Milligan, Fillmore County, Nebraska; died on 2 Aug 2013 in Friend, Saline County, Nebraska; was buried on 6 Aug 2013 in Bohemian National Cemetery (Milligan South), Milligan, Fillmore County, Nebraska. Edward graduated from Milligan High School in May, 1940, and joined the U.S. Navy in June. He was stationed at the Naval Receiving Station, Pearl Harbor, T.H., on December 7, 1941.

After completing six years in the Navy, he joined Wright and Wilhemy Wholesale Hardware in Omaha. He was in their employ for 40 years, traveling southeast Nebraska as a salesman for the company and making his home in Beatrice, Nebraska.

une Lee Chudly, age 86, was born 06/2/1934 to Frank and Amelia Sattler in Zion, Illinois. She passed away 8/05/2020 peacefully at her home in Lincoln where she has resided since 1960. June attended Zion-Benton Township Highschool in Zion, Illinois. She went on to become an Executive Secretary at the Naval base in Green Bay, Wisconsin where she met her future husband Lt. Commander Ornsby Lee. The two were married 28 years until his passing in 1988. Together they raised six children. In 1992, June married Edward J. Chudly and they spent nine years together traveling and enjoying life. June was an active member of the Nebraska Chapter of Pearl Harbor Survivors Association, along with both of her husbands. She spent her days gardening, bird watching, reading & golfing.

She is survived by her children, Allen Lee, Diane Lockwood, Nancy (Bill) Barclay, Steven (Stacy) Lee, John (Lori) Lee, Eric (Mary) Lee; grandchildren Joshua Lee, Elizabeth (Steven) Sydzyik, Alexandra Lee; brother Gerald (Carol) Sattler, and many nieces & nephews.

Sylvia Ruth Butcher, age 92, of Lincoln, passed away on December 1, 2017. She was born on July 16, 1925, in Milligan, to Edward and Anna (Hromadka) Chudly. Sylvia is survived by her sons, Michael Butcher of Lincoln; Mark (Eileen) Butcher of Seal Beach, California, daughter, Pam Butcher of Omaha; six grandchildren and great-grandchildren; sister, Grace Delaney of Lincoln. She was preceded in death by her husband Paul, son David, granddaughter Juli-Ann, parents, brother, Edward, and sister, Goldie.

Sylvia's wishes were to be cremated and a private graveside service will be held at a later date. Interment will be in Lincoln Memorial Park Cemetery. Memorials may be directed to the Lincoln Food Bank.

Ronald D. Uldrich of Milligan, NE passed away Thursday, June 11, 2015 at Fairview Manor in Fairmont, NE. Ronald D. Uldrich was the son of Anton W. Uldrich and Mamie (Chudly) Uldrich and was born on the family farm, section 36 NW1/4 Glengary Township in Fillmore County, NE on April 7, 1933. Ronald attended rural school District #48 in Fillmore County for his first eight years of education; he then attended Milligan Public High School District #71 and graduated in 1950.
Ronald farmed with he father until May 12, 1958 when he was inducted into the army. His basic training was at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri. From there he was sent to Korea the remainder of his time in active service and remained in the military reserves for six years following his duties in Korea. After his years with the military Ronald returned home and started farming with his father.
Ronald met Mary L. Engle in the summer of 1955 and they were married in the summer on June 2, 1957 at the First Congregational Church of Christ in Geneva, NE. Ronald was baptized and joined the church in 1956.

Ronald and Mary made their home in section 14 NW ? Glengary Township west of Milligan, NE. They still lived on the same farm for 58 years. Ronald and Mary just had their 58th Wedding Anniversary on June 2nd this year (2015). Together they had four children; Ronald Perry, David Rae, Janine Marie and Alex Dean.

Ronald is a member of the American Legion HSSK Post 240 of Milligan, a member of DAU, he served on the Milligan school board for five years, and Ronald also served on the Fillmore County ASCS board.

In 2010 Ronald helped his sons harvest their wheat crop. He was also honored on KOLN as the farmer of the week in 2006

Ronald's hobbies included going to farm sales, listening to Polka Party and dancing.

Rick A. Buchanan, 60 of Beatrice, NE, passed away at his home on Friday, April 24, 2020. He was born June 16, 1959 in Lincoln, NE. He graduated from Beatrice High School in 1977. Rick worked with his father as an electrician before going back to school to be a network analyst. He worked four years for Hoover MFG, then moved to the east coast and worked at several companies as a network engineer. After moving back to Beatrice, he worked for BSDC, Landmark Foods and Walmart until health issues forced him to retire. He married Janine Uldrich on April 10, 2014. Rick had been involved with the Community Players. He enjoyed playing drums and was the drummer for the band "Whizker Bizket". He enjoyed Husker football, North Carolina, his Scottish Heritage, Trans-Siberian Orchestra concerts and the trees in his yard. Rick was an excellent cook, enjoying smoking and barbecuing.

Survivors include his wife, Janine; daughters, Ciera Buchanan and Paige Buchanan both of Omaha, NE; granddaughters, Riley, Isabella, and Piper all of Omaha; 3 step-children, Clarisa Kattes of Milligan, NE, Michele Nesbitt (James) of Geneva, NE, Ethan Kattes (Amy Jo Baugh) of Hickman, NE; 3 step-grandchildren, Jordyn, Carter, and Rainie Nesbitt; mother-in-law, Mary L. Uldrich of Milligan; brothers-in-law, Ronald Uldrich (Chris) Milligan, David Uldrich of Allen, NE, and Alex Uldrich (Deborah) of Milligan; many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Lepha Mae Bojanski was born on Tuesday, March 15, 1927, to parents Leonard and Vlasta Anderson in Friend, Nebraska. Lepha later married Roman Ray Bojanski and from this union the two welcomed their son Randall. Lepha and Roman enjoyed a marriage that lasted 50 years together.
Lepha passed away on the afternoon of Monday, July 25, 2022, in Papillion, Nebraska at the age of 95 years.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; and sister Verna Shaw.

In 1994 Verna and Richard moved to Linwood and in 2009 they moved to Columbus. Verna was a Data Processor for Qwest Communications.
Verna is survived by sons: Matthew of Beatrice, Range and his domestic partner Bill Sheppard of Phoenix, AZ, Bowman (Florence) of Chicago, John (Christa) of Portland; daughter: Julie (Don) Bartels of Boston; grandchildren: Cole, Cameron, Taylor, Andrew, Lauren and Emma; sisters Leha Bojanski and Greta Schneider; nieces Patricia Martin and Linda Deines and nephew: Randy Bojanski.
