Although Brooks was said to have died of tuberculosis, he might actually have died in the great Spanish influenza epidemic of 1918. The disease maneuvered its way into the United States by soldiers, nurses and volunteers, viral carriers returning home from contagious flu infested combat zones. On October 31, 1918, the headlines in neighboring Jasper County, Texas read, "Flu Epidemic Raging the Globe--Over 20 Million Deaths Expected--Anti Influenza Vaccines Fail." The epidemic peaked in East Texas during the icy winter of 1918. (Source: Dony Harrison, Jasper NewsBoy January 20, 1999). No death certificate is on file for Brooks or his brother Price, who both died as young men.
