  1. 1.  Anna Margaretha Schmidt was born about 1730 in York County, Pennsylvania; died before Sep 1815 in York County, Pennsylvania.

    Notes:

Anna Margaretha (Schmidt), wife of Daniel Cramer, on the baptismal records of her daughter, Eva Elisabetha Cramer. Often shown as the daughter of Heinrich SCHMIDT.

However, Scott Michael Troutman, smtroutman@atlanticbb.net, in February 2005, had the following in his notes about the family of Heinrich and Anna Margaretha SCHMIDT: "Research of William S. CRAMER in Smith family file 2711, 1992, York Historical Society Library states that "Henry Smith emigrated aboard the ship Pennsylvania Merchant 11 Sept 1731 (Strassberger & Hicke pps 43,45,46.) List as Johan Hendrick Smit and Johan Hennrich Schmidt with Margarite Smit (his wife). Children also include a Rosina Smit.

Daughter Anna Margaretha is thought to be married to Daniel Kramer. Info in the Smith family file at York Historical Society give her birth as 1740, death 1803. However, she is listed in fathers will ca 1771 as married to Jacob Harbaugh, and NOT Daniel Kramer. IF Daniel Kramer died before 1771, or if Anna Margareta divorced and remarried, this might be possible. Otherwise, the information that Anna Margaretha Schmidt-the daughter of Heinrich Schmidt-was married to Daniel Kramer MAY BE IN ERROR."

Clarence E. Cramer writes that "The 1779 Tax Records show Helfer Cramer then owned a farm of 124 acres in Codorus Township (see page 12), and his mother is listed seperately as "Widow GRAMER" with the parental acres." (P. 52)

In September, 1815, Helfrig Cramer was the administrator of the Estate of Anna N. Cramer, widow, of Codorus Township. Tenet in $200. Inventory filed March 11, 1816. Account filed December 24, 1816, shows a balance of $9. 41 1/2. 1. 2.  Johann Helfer Cramer Descendancy chart to this point (1.Anna1) was born on 22 Sep 1753 in York County, Pennsylvania; died on 22 Sep 1833 in York County, Pennsylvania; was buried in Saint Jacobs (Stone) Union Church, Codorus Township, York County, Pennsylvania.

    Notes:

The given name Helfer/Helfrig/Helfrick/Helfrecht is said to mean "helper" or "help-right."

Clarence E. Cramer, in a preliminary draft of his manuscript titled "The Family of Johan Helfer Cramer (Revolutionary War Pension w-2762)"---which was presented at the John Cramer Family Reunion, Bascom, Ohio, August 22, 1943---stated that "Helfer was our first native-born American paternal ancestor...born and spent his early life in Codorus Township of York County, Pennsylvania." His listing on FindAGrave instead shows that he was born in Manheim Township, York County, PA. An abstract of his Revolutionary service simply states he was born in the year 1753 in York County, Pennsylvania, names of his parents not given.

A Helfer Kramer is referenced in the index of the book "Pennsylvania German Pioneers" by Strassburger/Hinke. Gen Pub Co, Baltimore, MD, 1966. (Vol I 628,631,634) Don Billet of the York County PA genweb was kind enough to look up the information referenced in Vol I for me, since Vol I was not available in the San Antonio Public Library. He sent me the following email: "List A Ship, Phoenix, Qualified 1 Oct 1754, Phila, Johan Helfergramer, pg 628. List B, Johann Helffer Cremer, pg 631 and List C, Johann Helffer Cramer, pg 634. No women or children listed this ship." Perhaps these are relatives? Edith Beard Cannon shows that a Lorentz Cramer was also listed aboard the Phoenix, the passengers being described as 11 Roman Catholicks, 25 Menonists, Swissers, 300 Souls. 554 Freights. From Franconia Palatinate, Zweybreck.

According to a biography of one of his children, published in the BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY OF VAN WERT COUNTY (OHIO), "Helfar Cramer came from Germany and took an active part in the American Revolution, and after the war settled in York County, PA, where he died, leaving seven children."

The book "Nine Months In York Town" by James McClure chronicles the period between September 1777 and June 1778, when the Continental Congress met and the Articles of Confederation were signed in York. Clarence E. Cramer writes that "York, a small town of 1,600 in 1775, was now the Nation's actual Capital...At York Horatio Gates was welcomed by the American Congress, Von Steuben came, and La Fayette reported. It was in York that Count Pulaski stopped and had his recruiting station. And here Congress remained through the darkest hours from Brandywine through Valley Forge to Monmouth. One York citizen, Hon. James Smith, signed the Declaration of Independence, six others became Generals in The Revolution..(and) some historians claim that York county sent more soldiers to the Revolutionary Army than any county in all of the 13 Colonies. When one considers that all of these came from this one small town and its surrounding county, despite the Friends and Mennonites unwilling to fight upon religious principles, others holding faithful to their Oath of Allegiance rather than to their homes, and a subtantial percentage of "Loyalists," something of the feeling of Helfer Cramer, his family, friends, neighbors and fellow citizens may be understood."

In Henry James Young's 1937 Compilation, "York County, Pennsylvania in the American Revolution," Vol. VI, p. 365, the entry for Helfer Cramer reads as follows: Priv. PA. Militia. Annual allowance $26.66. Received $66.65. Placed on roll 1/7/33. Start of Pension 3/4/31. Age 79. Act of 1832. On page 409 of the same book, a letter from the Veterans Administration to S. B. Bellows, dated Je 16, 1934 was transcribed as follows:

    Helfer Cramer - W.2762

"Helfer Cramer was born in the year 1753 in York County, Pennsylvania, names of his parents not given.

While residing in said York County, he enlisted July 10, 1776, served as a private in Captain John McDonald's company, Colonel Swope's Pennsylvania regiment [--"the Flying Camp"--] and was discharged January 15, 1777. He served in Captian John Miller's Pennsylvania company, from September 16, 1777 to November 15, 1777.

He was allowed pension on his application executed December 12, 1832, then a resident of Codorus Township, York County, Pennsylvania.

The soldier, Helfer Cramer, married April 5, 1785, Sophia Neetiz or Neteiz; the were married by "Parson Shrader," a Clergyman of the Lutheran Church of York County, Pennsylvania.

The widow, Sopia Cramer, was allowed pension on her application executed, December 5, 1838, then aged seventy-six years and living in York County, Pennsylvania. She died about July 1840.

Their children are referred to but Henry is the only one whose name was stated; he was in York County, Pennsylvania in 1840. "

Edith Beard Cannon, in "Genealogical Reports for The Historical Society of York County, Vol. XXIX, p. 62, Evidence of the Cramer Families of York before the year 1850 REVISED" published 1943, cites the service listed above, along with the additional service as follows: listed as a private in the First (Captain John Shearer) Company, Seventh Battalion, according to an arrangement of Militia officers, June 17, 1779, and served in this rank when it the became the Eighth Company of the Fifth Battalion, according to an arrangement for 1780 and 1782.

Helfer, along with George Kreps, assisted with the pension application for Andrew Finfrock. Andrew was a brother-in-law to Helfer, married to Barbara Neudig. Cramer and Kreps swore that they say Finfrock in the Army as a soldier at Fort Lee.

Clarence E. Cramer writes that "The 1779 Tax Records show Helfer Cramer then owned a farm of 124 acres in Codorus Township (see page 12), and his mother is listed seperately as "Widow GRAMER" with the parental acres." He is continously listed as "Single" and with the 124 acres, in the 1780, 1781, and 1782 tax records. A second record of the 1782 appraisal shows he owned 2 horses and 3 coes, also an addtional farm of 66 acres. (p. 52). Cramer further indicates that "It would appear that Helfer and Sophia owned three farms in all, the 124 acre farm in Codorus Township acquired in about 1777 or 1778, perhaps adding 66 acres to it; the 109 parental acres from his father; and 51 acres in Codorus Township bought in 1812. Helfer's taxes were well above the average of his community. (pp. 56-57). They lived not far from the Stone Church.

After the conclusion of the war in 1783, Helfrich continued to continued to serve in the local militia. In a return for September 27, 1788, Helfrich Cramer is a private in the Seventh (Captain Philip Cramer) Company, Fifth Battalion. According to a return of the election of Militia Officers, February 21, 1794, Helfer Cramer was chosen Lieutenant of the Sixth (Captain George Creps) Company, Second Regiment of the Light Horse.

Edith Beard Cannon, in "Genealogical Reports for The Historical Society of York County, Vol. XXIX, pp. 52 - 53, Evidence of the Cramer Families of York before the year 1850 REVISED" published 1943, cited the following deeds

(2R, 422) April 15, 1805. Account filed December 24, 1816, shows a balance of $9. 41 1/2. Source: Cannon, Edith Beard "Genealogical Reports for The Historical Society of York County, Vol. XXIX, p.48

The York County German Gazette, October 1, 1833 had the following obituary: "Am 22sten September, im Codorus Township, Hr. Johannes Helfer Cramer, ein alter Revolutions Soldat, ist gestorben, im 80ste yahr seines alters. Der versterbne diente im Krieg der Vereinigten Staaten gegen Grossbritannien, und erdulte hunger und blose eines siebenyahrigen Krieges."

The English York Gazette, October 15, 1833 published his obituary as follows: "On the 22nd ult. in Codorus Township, Mr. John Helfer Cramer, a soldier of The Revolution, died, aged 80 years. He served and endured hunger and privations of a seven years's war, that his country might be free."

Both newspaper articles were originally transcribed by Clarence E. Cramer in his 1943 manuscript about the Cramer family.

His tombstone read "Hier ruhen die gebeine von JOHAN HELFER Cramer, gebohre im September, 1753 gesterben den 22sten September, 1833, im 80 iahr seines Alter Ruhe sanft in deiner gruft Bis duch iesus Stemine ruft"--in English this woud read "ohan Helfer Cramer, born Sept., 1753 - died Sept 22, 1833 In this 80th Year, Rest peacefuly in your grave Until Jesus's voice calls you." The inscriptions on the stone were copied by the Reverend Doctor Paul D. Yoder and Clarence E. Cramer, sometime prior to the 1943 publication of Cramer's manuscript about the family of Johann Helfer Cramer.

FindAGrave indicates that Helfer was 80 years 0 months and O days old as of his date of death, so it would appear that September 22 was both his birth and death day.

    Notes:

His listing of FindAGrave shows he married Dorothy Elizabeth Menchey, and was the father of Christina Cramer Utz.

However, Robert Givens, in a 1988 genealogy titled "Neidig Genealogy Origins of the Family" stated that Daniel Cramer's son Phillip Cramer instead married Christina Neidig, daughter of Johannes and sister of Henrietta Sophia Neidig, wife of Phillip's eldest brother, Helfer Cramer.

It appears that Daniel's son Phillip did indeed marry a woman named Christina, based on the following deed, which references "Philip Kromer with Christina his wife"

Edith Beard Cannon, in "Genealogical Reports for The Historical Society of York County, Vol. XXIX, p. 52, Evidence of the Cramer Families of York before the year 1850 REVISED" published 1943, cited the following deed (2R, 422) April 15, 1805. Helfrich Kromer of Codorus Township, yeoman, and Sophia his wife: to George WERNER; for (Pounds) 49.10.0: 8 acres, 140 perches, part of tract of 109 acres 126 perches surveyed ) October 14, 1768, to Daniel Kromer in pursuance of an application for 100 acres dated September 13, 1768, now the property of the said Helfrick Kromer as it appears by released of his brother Daniel Kromer bearing date Aug. 29, 1782, given to his brother Philip Kromer with Christina his wife conveyed the same to Helfrick on April 9, 1791.

Perhaps Dorothy Menchey was a second wife.

Givens also writes that Phillip and Christina were the parents of 8 children, all of whom were christened at St. Jacobs. His list shows these children as: Johannes/John Cramer b. 29 Oct 1782; Christina Cramer, b. 10 July 1784 and married Mr. Gosnell; Maria Barbara Cramer, b. 7 Mar 1786 and m. Mr. Markley, Helfer/Helser Cramer b. 6 Apr 1790, Peter Cramer b. ???, Daniel Cramer b. ??? and d. 1845, Molly Cramer b. ??? and m. Mr. Cochran, and Anna Margaret Cramer, b. ??? and d. 1845. Dean Cramer has an identical list of children born to Daniel's son Phillip Cramer by Christina Neidig. He also noted that "I suspect Phillip may have also been named Henry...."

A database on Ancestry.com [Ancestry.com - York County, Pennsylvania Church Records, 1760-1800: Codorus Township] does have the following baptism records relating to four children born to a Phillip Cramer and a Christina Neidig:

Johannes Cramer, 1 Dec 1782, Saint Jacobs (Stone) Union Church, Codorus Twp, York County, Pennsylvania

Christina Cramer, 5 Aug 1784, Saint Jacobs (Stone) Union Church, Codorus Twp, York County, Pennsylvania

Maria Barbara Cramer, 11 Mar 1786, Saint Jacobs (Stone) Union Church, Codorus Twp, York County, Pennsylvania

Helfer Cramer, 26 Apr 1790, Saint Jacobs (Stone) Union Church, Codorus Twp, York County, Pennsylvania

It appears likely, however, that the husband of Christina Neidig was more likely another, older, Phillip Cramer. Daniel's son Phillip would have been only 13 years old when the eldest child was christened. Additionally Robert Givens stated that Phillips wife Christina was confirmed in St. Paul's in 1770 at the age of 14, so this would mean she was born about 1756. This would have made her 13 years older than her husband. If they married in 1782, prior to the birth of eldest son Johannes, Daniel's son Phillip would have been only 13, and his bride 26.

The family of Phillip Cramer and Christina Neidig should be studied further before conclusively linking them with the Phillip Cramer who was a son of Daniel Cramer and Anna Margaretha Schmidt.

Edith Beard Cannon, in "Genealogical Reports for The Historical Society of York County, Vol. XXIX, p. 53, Evidence of the Cramer Families of York before the year 1850 REVISED" published 1843, cited the following deeds relating to a Philip Cramer of Manheim.

(3C, 142) April 20, 1816. Stephen SHORB and Christina his wife; to Philip Cramer of Manheim Township, yeoman; for $417.72; 33 acres 120 perches in Manheim Township.

(3G, 362) April 26, 1823. John STICK and Salome his wife: to Philip Cramer and Andrew Gerhart: for $936; 80 acres in Manheim Township, to be held by the grantee as tenants in common.

(3H, 130) April 28, 1824. Andrew GERHART and Catharine his wife: to Philip Cramer of Manheim Township: for $376: the Grantors' intereste in #G, 362.

Generation: 3

  1. 10.  Juliana Cramer Descendancy chart to this point (2.Johann2, 1.Anna1) was born on 17 Feb 1786 in York County, Pennsylvania; was christened on 11 Mar 1786 in Saint Jacobs (Stone) Union Church, Codorus Township, York County, Pennsylvania; died about 1786 in York County, Pennsylvania.

    Notes:

Appears to have died young, as a namesake sister was born in 1790. Dean Cramer, in his notes, shows that she died in 1786, the year of her birth. Clarence Cramer shows that her baptismal sponsors were Johann and Elisabestha Neudig, her maternal grandparents., and that she died in infancy, likely buried in an unmarked grave at the Stone Church.

  2. 11.  Catharina Elisabetha Cramer Descendancy chart to this point (2.Johann2, 1.Anna1) was born on 6 Apr 1787 in York County, Pennsylvania; was christened on 20 May 1787 in Saint Jacobs (Stone) Union Church, Codorus Township, York County, Pennsylvania; died between 1811 and 1816 in York County, Pennsylvania.

    Notes:

Clarence Cramer shows that her baptismal sponsors were Johann and Elisabestha Neudig, her maternal grandparents. He also states that "she evidently lived a few years of more, and was probably buried in an unmarked grave at the Stone Church." Unlike more contemporary family researchers, he does not reference a marriage between Catharina and Jacob Werner.

Catharina married Jacob Werner on 7 Apr 1808 in St. Matthew's Church, Hanover, York County, Pennsylvania. Jacob (son of Johannes Werner and Juditha ???) was born on 16 Mar 1786 in York County, Pennsylvania; was christened on 17 Apr 1786 in Saint Jacobs (Stone) Union Church, Codorus Township, York County, Pennsylvania; and died. 3. 12.  Christian Cramer Descendancy chart to this point (2.Johann2, 1.Anna1) was born on 30 Jul 1788 in York County, Pennsylvania; was christened on 31 Aug 1788 in Saint Jacobs (Stone) Union Church, Codorus Township, York County, Pennsylvania; died on 12 Jul 1863 in Fostoria, Seneca County, Ohio; was buried in Pleasant Ridge Cemetery, Seneca County, Ohio.

    Notes:

Clarence Cramer indicates that his baptismal sponsors were Christian and Christine RUHLMAN. He said that after his marriage, Christian and Catharina lived near the Stone Church. He moved to Fostoria, Ohio, in 1837. (p. 57).

Dean Cramer writes that he lived on Uncle Daniel's farm next to Helfer. Moved to farm in Fostoria, Ohio. Dean thinks that Christian's 9 children were probably born in Fostoria, and lived mostly in Indiana. The source for most of Christian's descendants was Louis Haley

    Notes:

Clarence E. Cramer writes that she was baptized on the Fifth anniversary of her parents wedding. Her sponsors were Anthony and Margaret BRICKER, Helfer's cousins. He said that she lived near the Stone Church.

On the 1850 federal census, in South Codorus, York County, Pennsylvania there is a listing for Jacob Werner (age 34), who is enumerated with a Margaret Werner (age 32), and children Adam (age 7), Daniel (age 6), Matilda (age 4), and John (age 2). Living in the household is a female named JULIAN WERNER, age 57 (born ca 1793). Could this be Juliana Cramer Werner? She and Jacob were said to be the parents of a Jacob Werner, born ca 1817, among others.

Juliana married Jacob Werner on 7 Apr 1808 in St. Notes:

Clarence E. Cramer writes that his baptismal sponsors were his maternal grandparents, Johann and Elisabetha Neidig. He was named in honor of Johann(es) Neudig. He indicated that after his marriage, he and Catharina lived near the Stone Church. He moved to Fostoria, Ohio sometime between 1837 and 1840...(with) printed records for each of these dates, as well as Family tales. (P. 57).

Edith Beard Cannon, in "Genealogical Reports for The Historical Society of York County, Vol. XXIX, p. 52, Evidence of the Cramer Families of York before the year 1850 REVISED" published 1843, cited the following deed:

(3A, 29) December 26, 1814. Johannes Cramer of Shrewsbury Township, yeoman; to John KOLLER: for $1.50: lot 18 in Shrewsbury town.

According to the "Biographical History of Van Wert County (Ohio), Volume II" John Cramer Sr came to Ohio in 1840 and settled on a farm in Seneca County, where he died June 29, 1856, his wife having departed September 16, 1854. They were both members of the German Lutheran Church, and in politics, Mr. Cramer was a democrat. He had served in the war of 1812 as a captain, and was an honored man in his community, where he left a fair fortune. (p. 154) In the book "Seneca County, Biographical Sketches" it says that John and Catherine (Slote) Cramer settled in Loudon Township, Seneca County, in 1838, and purchased 160 acres of land, most of which they cleared and improved and where they lived; here the father died in 1855, in his sixty fifth year; and the mother in 1854, in her sixty second year. (Loudon Township, p 893)

According to Dean Cramer, John donated some of his own land for the Cramer Cemetery in Fostoria, Ohio.

    Notes:

Dean Cramer shows that she married Franz Schaffer, and that they were the parents of six daughters, Christina Anna (b. 1820), Mary Magdalena (b. 1824), Elizabeth and Margretha (twins, b. 1827 at both buried at Saint Jacobs Cemetery in York, PA), Rachel (b. 1829) and Catherina (b. 1831). Chuck Winter and Clarence Cramer both show her spouse as Francis Shaffer, an anglicized version of the name. Edith Beard Cannon's 1843 genealogy of the Cramer family, references a legal document referring to her as Margaret SHAFER (p. 67). Clarence Cramer writes that they lived in the vicinity of of Shaffer's Church in York County.

Rosalie Sommer, however, shows she married Thomas Tayler, most probably in error.

  7. 16.  Henrich "Henry" Cramer Descendancy chart to this point (2.Johann2, 1.Anna1) was born on 18 Oct 1795 in York County, Pennsylvania; died on 12 Aug 1865 in York County, Pennsylvania; was buried in Saint Jacobs (Stone Church Cemetery), Codorus Township, York County, Pennsylvania.

    Notes:

Dean Cramer writes that Henry had 9 children, 8 by his first wife Eva, and one by his second wife Anna. His birth and death dates were obtained from his headstone at St. Jacob's.
FindAGrave shows that he was a lawyer, and also liked to write music.

Edith Beard Cannon notes, in "Genealogical Reports for The Historical Society of York County, Vol. XXIX, p. 49, Evidence of the Cramer Families of York before the year 1850 REVISED" published 1843, that Henry Cramer was the administrator of the estate of his mother, Sophia Cramer, of his brother Laurence/Lorentz, also in 1843; and of Elizabeth Cramer, relationship not known, of Codorus Township in 1847. Clarence E. Cramer writest that he also administered the estate of George Krebs on April 1, 1847. (page 60).

FindAGrave notes that his headstone may be the one between his wife's stone and the stone of his father but his stone is almost unreadable. If it isn't that stone his stone may have been destroyed over time but he is buried in this cemetery. Chuck Winter shows his date of death as 30 October 1840.

Edith Beard Cannon, in "Genealogical Reports for The Historical Society of York County, Vol. XXIX, pp. 1-72, Evidence of the Cramer Families of York before the year 1850 REVISED" published 1943, writes that an Administation Bond (2N, 174) was posted on November 7, 1840 for the Estate of Laurence Cramer of Codorus Township, Henry Cramer Administrator. Helfer received a fair education in the rude schoolhouse of early days, and at the age of nineteen years commenced learning a trade, which he followed in Darke County, Ohio, where he had located in 1839. In 1844, he came to Indiana, moving upon the site of his present home in 1850. Mr. C. has been twice married; his first wife was Maria Reniker, who survived her marriage about five years. They are the parents of five children, viz:, Marry Ellen, Eliza Ann, David F., Charles H. and Margaret S. Mr. C. has spent a life of industry and usefulness, and is in possession of a handsome competence in his declining years.

They removed to Seneca, Ohio, abt 1837, where they lived until their death. Joel was reared to manhood there, received a common school education, such as the facilities of those days afforded. When aout 17 years of age he emigrated to Indiana, first settling in Wabash, with the expectation of learning the carpenter's trade with his brother, remaining with him the most of the time for 3 years. Then for about 6 or 7 years his time was divided between this and Wabash County. In 1856 he permanently located at what is now Andrews, where he lived until the fall of 1869, when he removed to the farm which now he resides.

November 16, 1856, his marriage with Mary A. Shively was solemnized, and to their union 5 children were born, of whom 3 are now living: Charles E., Gilford S., and Alpheus T. The deceased children were: Laura E., who died the wife of Millard F. Millman, and William A. In January 1865, he enlisted in the service of his country; February, he was mustered in Company B, One hundred and Fifty-Third Indiana Regiment of Volunter Infantry, serving until the close of the war, and was honorably discharged at Louisville, Ky., October 1865.

    Notes:

According the "History of Ionia and Montcalm Counties Michigan with Illustrations and Biographical Sketches of their Prominent Men and Pioneers" by John S. Schenck, Philadelphia, D.W. Ensign & Co. 1881, the first framed house in Odessa was built by Emory Russell after 1842. Other early settlers in and near the Russell neighborhood were Nelson Merrill, EMANUEL CRAMER, S.B. CHAPMAN, A.A. Haskins, A.J. Clark, P.S. Lapham, David Crapo, John D. Hight, Reuben Haight, George E. Kelly, James N. Galloway, and Asa Houghton (p. 315). It was further noted that Emanuel Cramer mustered out of the 21st From Ionia County, Michigan on June 8, 1865. The 21st was commanded by Col. Ambrose A. Stevens, Boston and Lieut.-Col. Morris B. Wells, Ionia. Col Stevens was released from service on Feb. 3, 1863 due to a disability. Lieut.-Col. Wells was killed at Chickamuaga on that same day. (pp. 74-75).

The "History of Ionia County, Michigan, her people, industries and...., Volume 2" by Elam E. Brach and EarlW. De La Vergne notes that he enlisted in Company A, Twenty-first regiment, Michigan Volunteer Infantry in August, 1862 and mustered out in June 1865 at the rank of corporal. This book also indicated that Emanuel Cramer was a carpenter and many of the buildings erected in the southern part of the county in pioneer days were built by him.

William was not listed as a child of John and Catherine (Schlote) Cramer in the BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY OF VAN WERT COUNTY, however, he was shown as a son in SENECA COUNTY BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCHES. It appears he is a child of John and Catherine, based both on the biography of his eldest brother, Daniel, and the fact that Daniel lived with him in 1880, and was listed as his brother.

He was a member of the Ebenezer Chapel Society, Bettsville, incorporated May 19, 1865.

    Notes:

Avis Smith had the following comments about her grandmother: "Sara Cramer was from a Pennsylvania Dutch family. She was a widow and had two sons that had died. Her parents were farmers and congregationalists. They had lived in Finley, Ohio before the family moved to Lake Odessa, Michigan. She was a descendant of a Revolutionary War soldier. When married to Augustus Eliot, they had three daughters: Ida, Flora, and Ellen."

Augustus Elliott's pension application, as well as her widow's application, state that she had never been married before. Avis's other grandmother, Mary Ann Smith, was twice widowed. Perhaps this is who she was thinking of. Sarah and Augustus did have two sons who died young, and another son who appears to have been stillborn. This might also account for the discrepency in Avis's recollections.

At the time of the 1860 census, she was living in the home of her elder brother, Henry Cramer. She was listed as a "domestic" apparently helping her sister-in-law care for the home and children.

    Notes:

Said to have married first Anna Maria Koller and second Catherine Stump. Anna Maria died. In November 1850, Israel was enumerated in Eden Township, Seneca County, Ohio with the family of Jesse and Julian COLER....perhaps these were his former in-laws. He is not listed with a wife, so presumably Anna Maria died before the date, probably in or after June 1850 when their daughter Anna Maria Cramer died.

    From FindAGrave:

Military Marker inscribed: Israil L. Cramer, First Lt Co B 57 Regt Ohio Inf, Civil War, December 22, 1900

Israel married Catherine Stump (b. 7 Aug 1831 in Little York, PA (sic), d. 9 Oct 1896 in Fostoria, Ohio) on 21 Mar 1854 in Little York, PA (??? or Ohio). It was a second marriage for both. Israel's first wife died in childbirth in Ohio. Israel had moved west to Fostoria, Ohio in the late 1840s, joined the 57th Ohio Volunteers when the unit was created in 1861. He mustered out in 1865 with only one furlough of a month in early 1864. Israel's unit saw action with Sherman's army in the Civil War. He served as a Quartermaster Sergeant before being promoted to Bugler First Lieutenant which is the rank he held when mustering out. After the war, Israel's occupation was a Carpenter in Fostoria according to the 1880 Census. The Danville Veteran's home documents state he had "gray eyes and fair hair."

    Notes:

A biography of his son, posted online at the Ancestry.com Message Board for Huntington County, Indiana, notes that

"Joseph L. Cramer, also a native of York county, Pennsylvania, and was crippled in 1861, being unable to perform manual labor. He was one of nine children, six sons and three daughters. He learned the trade of a shoemaker, and in the fall of 1856 came to Huntington county, Indiana, settling on a farm near the village of Pleasant Plain, and there plied his craft. It was not long before he gained an enviable reputation for his skill and the thoroughness of his work, and the entire neighborhood came to him when they wanted shoes made. He would take the leather and fashion a boot or shoe from the very first step to its completion, ready for the wearer. He loved children, and it did not take the little folks long to find out that he was their friend. His shop was their headquarters and he never failed to show his appreciation of them and a deep interest in all the little affairs which make up the world of childhood, and he was a prime favorite among all the children."
