He had a sister, Patsy RICE of Hemphill, and was buried in the Harper Chapel Cemetery. His obituary was in the January 29, 2014 issued of the Sabine County Reporter.

    The obituary of his wife, Betty (FAG #64504975) Published in Las Vegas Review-Journal from January 20 to January 21, 2011 and posted to FindAGrave by "Miracle Mile Tim," shows that "Her husband, of 65 years, John, was a career Marine and she, her husband and three children traveled extensively with the military. She is survived by her husband, John; her daughter, Linda; her son, Michael; seven grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; one brother; three sisters; a sister-in-law; and many nieces, nephews, cousins and dear friends. She was preceded in death by her daughter, Carolyn."
