    Notes:

    In Kenneth Morgan's book, MORGAN'S EAST TEXAS TALES, he wrote that "Since my earliest memories, I have heard the old folks speak of "The Becky Field". (After her husband died) leaving Rebecca with five children still living at home, ranging in age from 4 to 17, and Carrol age thirty, who was crippled. With all the children pitching in, they tended the fields and raised enough produce for the family, with some left over to sell for cash money...."Aunt Becky" as she was called by friends and neighbors, ran cattle and hogs in the woods. She was a fine horsewoman, and sometimes rode with a baby on the saddle. In winter time, hogs were butchered, and the meat carried to town in the wagon, where it was peddled door to door. Becky heated big rocks ont he wood stove, wrapped them in burlap sacks, and placed them in front of the wagon to keep her feet warm on the long drive. When there was sickness or death in the community, she was always there to help in any way she could."

    Her son, Albert Turner, was the informant on her death certificate.

    Roganville. Funeral services for Mrs. Mittie Hawthorne, 79, of Roganville, will be tomorrow at 2 pm in Zion Hill Baptist Church. Rev. Elmos Withers, pastor of the Antioch Primitive Baptist Church, will officiate. He will be assisted by Rev. Jessie Thomas, a Baptist minister.

    Burial will be in the church cemetery under the direction of Causey's Stringer Funeral Home of Kirbyville. Pallbearers will be grandsons, Hugh Beaver, Harvie Hawthorne, Ronnie Hawthorne, Douglas Hawthorne, Max Lee Hawthorne, Kerry Hawthorne, Robert Armitage and Dennis Hawthorne.

    The body was moved to the Hawthorne home today at 2 pm and will remain there until tomorrow at 1 pm when it will be moved to the church. She died today about 2 am in Jasper Hospital following a long illness.

    She was a native of Jasper County and had lived all her life in Jasper County. She was a member of the Antioch Primitive Baptist Church.

    Survivors include 6 sons, Elliott Hawthorne of Port Neches, Guy Hawthorne of Goodrich, Edward Hawthorne and S.C. Hawthorne, both of Vidor, Eston Hawthorne of Bridge City and Arthur Jack Hawthorne of Kirbyville; 4 daughters, Mrs. Perry Spillers of Lake Jackson, Mrs. Bruce Sheffield of Kirbyville, Mrs. Edgar Morgan of Orange and Mrs. Roger Armitage of Gibson, LA; one sister Mrs. Polk Hawthorne of Roganville; 27 grandchildren; and 18 great grandchildren.

    Her headstone was inscribed "Thy Life was Beauty, Truth, Goodness, and Love."

    Mittie married Sion Hawthorn on 30 Oct 1910 in Kirbyville, Jasper County, Texas. She was a lifelong resident of Jasper County. Survivors include three daughters, Aline Kelley of Beaumont, and Martha V.     Elliott Hawthorne

    Elliott Hawthorne, 83, of Houma, La died Thursday, March 9, 1995, at his residence.

    Hawthorne was a retired construction inspector with United Gas Pipeline. He was a native of Roganville, Texas, and had lived in Houma for several years.

    Survivors: wife, Leola Peoples Hawthorne of Houma; a son, Harvie E. Hawthorne of Houma; a daughter, Terry Diann Douglas of Pennsylvania; brothers, Edward Hawthorne of Vidor, Eston Hawthorne of Orange, and Arthur Jack Hawthorne of Brookeland; sisters, Alice Spillars of Lake Jackson, Olnie Sheffield of Roganville; and Zelma Morgan and Elsie Armitage, both of Kirbyville; nine grandchildren and two great grandchildren.

    Graveside rites were held at 3 p.m. Saturday at Zion Hill Cemetery in Jasper County. Arrangements were handled by Forest Oaks Funeral Home, Jasper.

    Arthur Jack Hawthorne, 62, of Brookeland died Friday, June 9, at Memorial Hospital in Jasper.

    Hawthorned had lived in Brookeland three years and was a retired steel rigger with Texaco. He was a native and former longtime resident of Kirbyville.

    Survivors: wife, Winnie Faye Hawthorne of Brookeland; sons, Kerry Hawthorne and Kent Hawthorne of Brookeland; daughter, Kim Hawthorne of Kirbyville; brothers, Edward Hawthorne of Vidor and Eston Hawthorne of Orange; sisters, Alice Spillers of Lake Jackson, and Oline Sheffield, Zelma Morgan, and Elcie "Crickett" Armitage, all of Kirbyville; and one grandchildren.

    Funeral services were held Sunday at the chapel of String Funeral Home in Kirbyville. Interment followed at Magnolia Springs Cemetery.

Hawthorne of Franklin, Tenn., and William E. "Billy" Hawthorne of Colmesneil; daughter, Mary E. Dobbs of Anchorage, Alaska; brother, Lenox Hawthorne of Silsbee; sisters, Wynona Lumpkin of Spring; 11 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

    POLK HAWTHORNE, JR.

    Funeral services for Polk Hawthorne, Jr., 83, of Silsbee are 2:00 pm Monday at Farmer Funeral Home with interment following in Zion Hill Cemetery in Jasper. Visitation will begin at 5:00 pm Sunday at the funeral home. Mr. Hawthorne died February 3, 2006 at Pine Arbor Healthcare in Silsbee. A native of Roganville, Mr. Hawthorne was a longtime resident of this area. He was a retired guard from Texaco and was also a farmer. Polk was also a retired bus driver from Silsbee ISD and proudly served his country in the US Army during WWII. Mr. Hawthorne is survived by two sons and daughters-in-laws, Rickey and Wanda Hawthorne of Buna and Larry and Debbie Hawthorne of Kirbyville; daughter and son-in-law Judy and Roy Hernandez, Jr. of Nederland; sister Marcelle Conlin of Longview; seven grandchildren and five great grandchildren.
