Hildegarde "Kay" Green went to be with her Heavenly Father on the evening of January 9, 2009. She was 95 years old at the time of her death.

Kay was born September 29, 1913, in San Antonio, Texas, to Dick A. and Gertrude Mueller. She spent her formative years in Yorktown, Texas, and graduated from Yorktown High School.

Kay married Dr. J.C. Green November 28, 1935, Thanksgiving Day, and they made their home in Nacogdoches in 1949. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; and brother, Randy Mueller. She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Peggy and Campbell Cox of Nacogdoches; her son and daughter-in-law, Jimmy and Susan Green of Fort Worth; her grandchildren, Cam and Jennie Cox, Marcus Cox and Courtney Green; and three great-grandchildren, Travis, Thomas and Samantha.

Kay's energies were devoted to supporting her family's interests, gardening and serving her Lord. She was a devoted wife, a loving mother and grandmother and a caring friend to many. Kay supported her husband's teaching career, and she placed a very high importance on education. Kay and J.C. established a scholarship at SFA for agriculture majors. Kay enjoyed meeting the scholarship recipients and receiving letters from them throughout the years. Earlier in life, Kay survived a stint as Cub Scout den mother and fondly remembered the boys long after they had grown into men. One of her greatest passions in life was growing flowers and gardening. She was a member of the Flora Garden Club for more than 50 years and spent countless hours developing and maintaining the plaza gardens located across from the Hotel Fredonia and the old bus station. Kay said many people's first impressions of Nacogdoches occurred when they arrived at the bus station or walked out of the hotel. She wanted that first impression to be a positive one, and she and the other members of the Flora Garden Club accomplished that goal when they turned an empty patch of ground into a beautiful garden. Kay was a delegate to the Nacogdoches Federation of Women's Clubs and served on the restoration committee of the Old University Building. She enjoyed serving as a docent for the Old University and making it available for tourists to visit. Additionally, she assisted with the production of the historic pageant "Gateway to Texas" that told the story of Nacogdoches.

Her work in the community was recognized when Kay was inducted into the Women's Hall of Fame by the Nacogdoches Commission on Women and Families in 2000. Kay's Christian faith sustained her and brought her much joy throughout her life. She was an active member of the First Baptist Church of Nacogdoches until health issues prevented her from attending. She and her husband, J.C., led Baptist Training Union for the youth of the church, and Kay had many dear friends in her Sunday school class. The family wishes to express their sincere thanks to Kay's very special friends: Christine Bryce, Dannie Loggins, Betty Bolton, Maxine Hall, and Jane Tubbe. The family is also grateful for the gentle care that Dr. Richard Baker provided Kay over many years.

Pallbearers will include Travis Cox, Thomas Cox, Ralph Phillips, Dr. Richard Baker, Greg Williams, Jimmy Mize, Dr. Dale Perritt and Dr. Dick Voigtel. Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday, January 13, 2009, at the First Baptist Church of Nacogdoches. Interment will follow at Oak Grove Cemetery. Memorial donations can be made to the Dr. J.C. Green Agriculture Scholarship at the Stephen F. Austin State University Alumni Association, P.O. Box 6096, SFA Station, Nacogdoches, Texas 75962-6096; Flora Garden Club; or First Baptist Church Building Fund, 411 North Street, Nacogdoches, Texas 75961. Cason Monk-Metcalf Funeral Directors.
