Payne, Thomas Bunker with his second wife, Lillian (James) Payne and son Marion Clyde

Although Lillie appears as if she could be Native American, no enrollment within the Five Civilized Tribes has been found. Additionally, when Thomas enrolled in the Chickasaw Nation based on his marriage to his first wife, Lillie was described as a "white woman." Thomas died six years after this photo "after a long and lingering illness like consumption." Lillie died within four years of her husband, after being "sick only a few hours." Their three young children, ages 11, 8 and 5, were left orphaned, as was Tom's older son, Thomas Hamilton Payne, 17.
