He started more than 600 Kiwanis clubs worldwide and more than 15,000 men joined during his 25 years. He was the owner of the former T. F. Winebrenner Farm Implement, Huntington. Born May 28, 1898, to Tilghman F. and Viola Fulton Winebrenner. Marriage was March 24, 1920, in Huntington, to the former Celia Cramer. She preceded him in death in July 1981. Gladys Mavor Winn Collier was born December 11, 1897 in Grange Hall Community in Marshall, Texas to Albert Mavor Winn and Annie Asia Russell Winn. She was the youngest of Annie's 11 children. She attended Marshall Public Schools.

Gladys was a Methodist and a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxillary. She was a homemaker, a former employee of the telephone company and the Marshall Basket Company. She operated the Marshall Canteen at the high school for many years.

She married George Augustus Collier, Sr. on July 29, 1919 in Marshall. They soon had three children: Dorothy Byrle, Reba "Nell" and George Augustus "Jake", Jr.

She was prededed in death by her husband in 1936 and by her daughter Nell in 1986. She died April 15, 1993 following a long illness. Services were held at Travis Street Chapel of Sullivan Funeral Home. Reverand Glenn Lowrimore and Reverend Jerry Ross officiated. Interment followed in Greenwood Cemetery. 		 STR06

He graduated from Texas Military Institute in San Antonio and later earned his associate's degree and worked in the medical field as an X-Ray Technician. He was a member of Oakhill Baptist Church.

Bruce is survived by his wife, Stacey Winslow of Hemphill; step-mother, Shirley Winslow of Hemphill; son, Jonathan Winslow of Nacogdoches; daughters, Katherine Walker and husband, Neil, of Katy, Texas, Emberlee Winslow of Hemphill, and Kenedee Hargrove of Hemphill; sister, Angie Bishop and husband, Victor, of Clarksville, Texas; step-brother, Sonny Payne of Nederland; step-sister, Paula Pruitt of Katy; and two grandchildren, Tristan Walker and Riggs Walker.

Jesse Franklin Winters (December 22, 1893 '96 June 5, 1986), nicknamed "Buck" and "T-Bone", was an American right-handed Major League Baseball pitcher who played for the New York Giants and the Philadelphia Phillies from 1919 to 1923. He also played in the minor leagues until 1925 for the Kansas City Blues, Toronto Maple Leafs, Hartford Senators, Portland Beavers and Wichita Falls Spudders. He was listed during his playing career as 6' 1" and 165 pounds.

He began his professional career in 1916 at the age of 22 and played for nine seasons, until the age of 31 in 1925. He split his career between the major leagues and the minors, spending four full seasons and a part of a fifth at the former level. In the minors, he spent two full seasons at the Double-A level, parts of two seasons at the Double-A level and part of one season at the Single-A level. Based on the record that is available, it is known that he pitched in 106 minor league games, going 36'9636 with a 3.70 ERA in 656 innings. He also had 241 at bats, hitting .212 with four doubles.[1]

He played in the major leagues from 1919 to 1923, appearing in 110 games and going 13'9624 with a 5.04 ERA in 405 innings. He allowed 510 hits and 164 walks, while striking out 94 batters. He was used both as a relief pitcher and a starting pitcher, finishing in the top 10 on the National League leader board in games finished and saves multiple times. As a batter, he hit .171 in 117 at bats and in the field, he committed 10 errors for a .929 fielding percentage. He was also involved in six double plays.[2]

He was a highly touted young player at the onset of his career, being initially compared to Hall of Fame pitcher Christy Mathewson and eventually former 21-game winner Ferdie Schupp.[3][4] According to contemporary accounts of the time, his assets were many-fold: "He has every physical qualification", stated the New York Tribune, "as well as a varied assortment in the pitching line."[5] He also had a quick pickoff move to first base, with Giants' manager John McGraw claiming "(Winters) can peg to first base more quickly than any other man in the National League."[6] He performed well in the minor leagues, however a lack of control at the major league level, an indifference towards the game, a lack of ambition and eventually a bad arm ended his hopes of stardom.[4][5]

Following his playing career, he owned a tire company in Abilene, Texas, later becoming that town's mayor. 		 STR06

Lois Mae Ross

Lois Mae Townsend Ross, 78, of Buna died Wednesay, Oct. 9, 1996, at Baptist Memorial Hospital in Beaumont.

She was a native of Pineland and had lived in Buna for several years.

Survivors: daughters, Ruby NICKELSON of Buna and Ethel WHITE of Magnola; a son, Sonny Mack Townsent of Buna; six grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 10. 1996, at the R. S. Farmer Funeral Home chapel in Silsbee. Interment followed at Forest Lawn Cemetery in Beaumont.

Robert is survived by his wife Jo Ann Wise of Bronson, his parents Billy and Carol Wise of Milam, a son Christopher Dickerson of Hemphill, two daughters, Heather Lynn Bell and Ashley Nicole Wise Hager both of Hemphill, grandchildren, Kyla, Shayla, Peyton, Blake, Katelyn and Brayden. He is also survived by two brothers, Ronald Wise of Hemphill and Richard Wise of Milam and a son-in-law Gary Wayne Hager of Milam.

Visitation will be from 4:00 PM until 9:00 PM Thursday and Friday evenings, August 25 & 26, 2011, in the Starr Funeral Home, 510 Starr St., Hemphill, TX. Funeral services will be at 10:00 AM, Saturday, August 27, 2011, in the Starr Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will follow in the Rosevine Cemetery, Rosevine, TX.

DeLores Eleanor (Witfoth) Becwar went on her last trip on Thursday, May 2, 2019 leaving from Tabitha Gardens at Crete, Nebraska at the age of 94. She was born April 11, 1925 to Clarence and Bertha (Kasl) Witfoth on a farm nine miles south of Friend. DeLores attended Sunflower Country School District #100 in Saline County through the 8th grade. Both her grandfathers (Fred Witfoth and Joe Kasl) had attended this school as well as her father. Dee graduated from Friend High School with the class of 1942.

On August 28, 1945, she was united in marriage to Leonard Becwar in Friend. To this union three children were born: Kenneth LeRoy, Dawn Eloise and Mark Leonard. They lived in Ohiowa, Fairmont, Salina, Kansas, Milligan and Friend. Recently Dee moved to Crete after Leonard passed away.

Dee ("Mrs B" to her students) taught in several schools during her 43-year career: Districts 100 and 90 (which was north of District 100), Spunky Hollow (North of Western), Golden Egg (East of Milligan), District 33 (South of Exeter), Ohiowa, Fairmont and Milligan Public Schools. She touched the lives of over 1,000 students from Kindergarten through the 9th grade. Mrs. B was reminded by several of her former students about "Station BECWAR". If this station was on-the-air they had better be tuned in. They made comments about having fun and enjoyed her sense of humor. But also knew when they should get down to business.

Her hobbies included bowling, crocheting, knitting, quilting, oil painting, tole painting plus her special collection of over 1,200 bells. Reading, playing games and connecting with friends on FaceBook on her IPad and playing bingo were her favorite pastimes these past 5 years. From 1977 to 1997, Dee and LB planned over 90 tours and had a mailing list of 370 couples and singles. She enjoyed giving talks about their tours to organizations and her students. She was known as Mama Dee when singing with the LB Orchestra.

Dee was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Leonard in 2008, son, Kenneth and his wife Sandy in 1993.

Leaving to mourn are her daughter, Dawn (Doug) Mundt, Crete, son Mark, Albuquerque, NM. Seven grandchildren and spouses, Shannon (Shaun) Mee, Colorado Springs CO, Chad Becwar, Lincoln, Jennifer Becwar, Lincoln, Kamron Becwar, Boca Del Toro, Panama, Jarod (Stacey) Mundt, Windsor, CO, Julie (Jared) Rohrs, Lincoln and Chandler Marintzer, Greeley, CO, eleven great-grandchildren and one great-great grandson, nieces, a nephew, cousins and a host of other relatives and friends.

The family will greet relatives and friends from 6-8 pm at the funeral home on Sunday. 		 STR06

Memorial services for Weldon Vern "Don" Withers, 81, of Frankston were held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, June 2, at Tyler Christian Church with Brother Bill Goble officiating.

Burial was in Red Hill Cemetery, Murchison, under direction of Chandler Memorial Funeral Home, Chandler.

Mr. Withers died Sunday, May 30, at his residence.

He was born April 23, 1923 in Comanche to the late Charles and Sylvia Withers.

He lived in Frankston for 18 years, and was a co-founder of the Parkinsonians of East Texas (PET), a special support group for Parkinson's patients, and formation of a new library for Parkinson's patients that will be housed in the East Texas Medical Center Pavilion. Prior to retirement, he was refractories specialities manager with Kaiser Aluminum in Ohio, Missouri and Indiana. He served with First Radio Squadron during World War II and also served in the Korean War. Mr. Withers was a Mason in Houston and a deacon at Tyler Christian Church.

Survivors include his wife of 57 years, Billie Pauline Withers of Frankston; daughters, Donna Regina McLemore of Austin and Treva Deanne Pytlik of Cortland, Ohio; a son, Charles Dean Withers of Cleveland, Ohio; and three grandchildren.

Pallbearers were grandsons, Ryan and Andrew McLemore, and nephews, Craig and Alan Wiggins, Jerry, Jeff and Jim Speer.

Honorary pallbearers included John Turner, Leonard Hendren, William Butts, Jack McClung, Chuck Jacobsen and Steve Gullekon.

Mrs. Akerman Passed Away Friday

Mrs. Wm. Akerman passed away at the home of her daughter, Mrs. H.F. Lenzner, shortly before midnight on Friday, Aug. 17, following an illness with cancer. Funeral services were conducted at the Lenzner home on Monday afternoon by Rev. C.Fl. Smith, and interment was made in the Elkland cemetery.

Marie Wittwer was born in Bern, Switzerland, on Dec. 12, 1860. She came to the United States at the age of 21 and was united in marriage with Wm. Akerman at Forestville, Michigan, on Oct. 27, 1884. They resided on a farm near Forestville until 1905 when the family moved to Cass City in order to give the children the advantage of a High School education. Mrs. Akerman had formerly been affiliated with the Evangelical church at Forestville and Cass City but at the time of her death was a member of the Simpson Avenue Methodist Church in Kalamazoo with which she united during her residence in that city. She was always very interested in all matters of religious nature and passed very peacefully into the life beyond.

Besides her husband and three daughters, Mrs. Herbert Blodgett of Hartford City, Ind., Mrs. Joseph A. Benkelman and Mrs. H.F. Lenzner, both of Cass City, she leaves four brothers, Dr. E. A. MARGAURITE GRAHAM, 58, of Duncan, died Saturday, June 16, 2007, in her home.
Funeral will be at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday in First Baptist Church, with the Rev. Richard Stewart officiating. Interment will be in Duncan City Cemetery under direction of Don Grantham Funeral Home.

Margaurite was born July 1, 1948, in Duncan. She served the elderly as an Elder Care case manager for Association of South Central Oklahoma Governments (ASCOG) prior to her retirement in 2001.

Diagnosed in 1997 with cancer, Margaurite battled through numerous recurrences of this terrible disease. Finally, her body gave out. Even though she lost the physical battle, her soul and spirit remain forever strong. Her journey was always filled with joy, laughter and optimism, and she always maintained her infectious enthusiasm for life. She displayed the courage, grace and dignity that comes with a loving and giving heart.

She is survived by her husband, John; her father, Wilson Witty of Duncan; two daughters, Carie Woody and husband Steve of South Bend, Ind., and Cori Rennaker and husband Clay of Rush Springs; a son, Chad Trawick and wife Missy of Keller, Texas; a brother, Edwin Witty and wife Karla of Duncan; a nephew, D.J. Witty of Norman; stepdaughters, Dohn McCarn and husband Michael, and Angy Stewart and husband Kevin, all of Blanchard, and Charity Haywood and husband Mike of Yukon; eight grand-children, Taylor Woody, Taryn Woody, Tallye Woody, Mackenzie Manuel, Jacob Manuel, McKailey Rennaker, Casey Trawick and Carson Trawick; and eight step-grandchildren, Megan McCarn, Elizabeth McCarn, Katlyn McCarn, Emily McCarn, Ellie Stewart, Garrison Stewart, Brittany Haywood and Hunter Haywood.

She was preceded in death by her mother, Denva Lee Witty.

Funeral services for Alice Joy (Womack) Haygood, 84, of Huntington will be held Saturday, June 8, 2019, at 10:00 a.m. in the Wyman Roberts Memorial Chapel in San Augustine with Bro. Charles Williams officiating. Burial will follow in the Rosevine Cemetery in Sabine County.
Mrs. Haygood was born May 5, 1935, in San Augustine County to the late William Henry and Tassie Alice (Walton) Womack, and went to be with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, June 3, 2019, in a Lufkin hospital.
Alice was a kind, loving person to everyone she met. She was selfless and would lend a helping hand to any neighbor in need. No matter where she lived or what the circumstances, Mom always managed to make the old house into a loving home. She was a mother to every child in every neighborhood she lived in and no child ever went hungry or without. Her homemade biscuits, fried chicken and pies were loved by everyone who had the pleasure of eating them. She was a self-made seamstress and made many of her own and her children's clothing, quilts, curtains and other homemade crafts. No rags went unused because she skillfully turned them into rag rugs which adorned her home and those she gifted or sold them to. Above all else Mom was love.
Survivors include sons and daughters-in-law, O.T. Jr. and Crystal Haygood of Huntington, J.T. and Connie Haygood of Huntington; daughters and sons-in-law, Joy and Al Soape of Huntington, Sally Floyd of Lufkin, Patsy Haygood and Dale Donnell of San Augustine, and Wanda and Joe Allen of Huntington, 15 grandchildren; 31 great-grandchildren; 18 great-great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband of 48 years, O.T. Haygood, Sr.; two great-grandsons; six brothers; and three sisters.
Pallbearers will be grandsons: Colby Denby, Travis Haygood, Robert Russell, Taylor Russell, Aaron Haygood, Zachary Allen, Daniel Allen, Clint Haygood, Cory Haygood, Michael Lovett, Corey Colbert, and Bradford Colbert.
Honorary pallbearers are granddaughters, Melissa Davis and Tamara Denby.
The family will welcome friends from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. Friday, June 7, 2019, at the funeral home.
The family wishes to extend a special thanks to the Hospice in the Pines Nursing Staff for their extraordinary generosity of spirit, care and kindness during our time of sorrow.

Melba was born July 15, 1946 in San Augustine, Texas to the late Mr. and Mrs. W.H. and Tassie Alice Walton Womack. She married Roger Dale Evett and they shared many blessed years together until his passing. Mrs. Evett was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother whom loved her family dearly. She made sure that the needs of her husband and family were fully taken care of often forsaking her own. She made sure that everyone around her, especially her family and friends were comfortable.

Melba will be dearly missed by everyone that had the great blessing of knowing her.

She is survived by; three children, Darlene Cooling and her husband Tim of Baytown, Texas, Kimberly Evett and Jami Madley of Spring, Texas, and Dale Evett and his wife Jennifer of Roanoke, Texas. 5 Grandchildren; Lucas Gantt, Logan Gantt, Jake Evett, Mika Evett, and Landon Evett. She is also survived by one sister, Joy Haygood of San Augustine, Texas as well as numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Husband, Roger Dale Evett, three brothers; Carl Womack, Chock Womack, and Johnny Womack; and two sisters; Dorothy Parsons, and Bonnie Womack.

Funeral Services will be held Tuesday, May 2, 2017 at 11:00 A.M. in the Wyman Roberts Funeral Chapel. Burial will follow in the Attoyac Cemetery under the direction of Wyman Roberts Funeral Home.

"Louise" was born in Stinnett, Texas, on October 22, 1940, and had lived in San Augustine County since 1999. She received a Bachelor of Science in Home Economics and Education from Texas Tech University in Lubbock, Texas. During her professional life, she had achieved many accolades and awards but her passion was education and teaching young people. She retired from teaching in San Augustine. Prior to teaching in San Augustine, she had taught science and art in Houston, San Antonio, Florida, and Germany.

Louise is survived by her husband, Duke Lyons of San Augustine, Texas; her daughter and son-in-law, Kimberly and John Barry of Melbourne, Australia; her son and daughter-in-law, Greg and Allison Lyons of Houston, Texas; her four grandchildren, Samantha and Matthew Barry of Melbourne, Australia, and Sarah and Jake Lyons of Houston, Texas; brothers, Bill Womble of Dallas, Texas, and Dub Womble of Spearman, Texas; as well as sisters, Betty Helen Anderson and Kathy Womble of Lubbock, Texas.

Louise was preceded in death by her parents, Robert "Boy" and Helen Womble; as well as two sisters, Donna Nell Smith and Peggy Fondren.

A memorial service has been planned for 11:00 a.m. Saturday, January 25, 2020, at Wyman Roberts Memorial Chapel, located at 316 W. Columbia Street in San Augustine, Texas.

Following the service, the family will be hosting a reception for family and friends at the residence.

A. J. Wood, Sr., 78, died at his home in the Pine Park area Wednesday, Oct. 7, 2009.

Wood was born August 16, 1931 in Shelby County. He was a retired machine operator for Temple Inland, and was greatly appreciated by those who worked with him. He loved the people in the Pine Park/Plainview Community and Sabine County. He was a Godly man and a long time member of the Pine Park Pentecostal Church where he served on the Board of Trustees until his death.

Wood is survived by five sons, A. J. Wood Jr. and wife, Charlotte of Pineland, Gerald Wood and wife, Debbie, of Nacogdoches, Johnny Wood of Nacogdoches, Wayne Wood and wife, Jean of Center, and James Wood and wife, Angela of Hemphill; brothers Chester Wood of Broken Arrow, OK and Orville Wood of Clarence, OK; sisters, Evelyn Loven of Nacogdoches, Hazel Brown of Longview, and Janice Maloney of Broken Arrow, OK; 15 grandchildren; and 11 great-granchildren.

Wood was preceded in death by his wife of 52 years, Katie Joe Kelley Wood; brothers, LaVaughn Wood and Douglas Wood; sisters, Gladys Loven and one grandchild.

Funeral services were held Saturday, Oct. 10 at Starr Funeral Home Chapel. Interment followed in the Pinehill Cemetery.

Arrangements were under the direction of Starr Funeral Home Inc in Hemphill.

Barbara Yancey Dore shows Margaret's maiden name was STEDDHAME. She writes that he was "reported to be the first person buried in what would become the WOOD CEMETERY about 1860 or 1861. The Wood family deeded land for a cemetery at a later date. The Wood Cemetery Association, with a permanent care fund, meets at the cemetery each year on the first Saturday in August for their annual meeting and cemetery working."

The following biography, prepared by Robert Strickland, a descendant, is copied from FindAGrave:

Charles Ayers Wood came to Texas from New Jersey in 1831 when Texas was still a part of Mexico. Texas became a republic in 1836 and a state in 1845.

Sources disagree on his middle name. It could have been Ayers (also spelled Ayres or Ayars), his mother's maiden name, or Azrael (or Azraih / Azrail / Azel / Azrall, etc.), after his father. He had two grandsons who were both named Charles Ayers Wood. They were double cousins, sons of Wood brothers who married Meigs sisters. Ayers seems to be the most likely middle name.

According to a Bible originally owned by Samuel Stedham / Steddum / Statham, Charles Ayers Wood was the son of Azraih Wood and Margaret Ann Ayers. Charles was born 22 Mar 1806 in NJ and died 19 Mar 1858 in San Augustine Co., TX. His father, Azraih died 10 Dec 1811 near Philadelphia. "He drowned."

Azel Wood and Margaret Ayars were married Nov. 13, 1802, Cumberland County, NJ Marriages, Volume A 1795-1838, page 46 (www.familysearch.org). Margaret Ayars was born 17 Sep 1774 to John Ayars (1736-1802) and Susannah Jarman (1741-1824). Margaret died in 1815 or on 10 Feb 1813.

In John Ayars and his Descendants compiled by Frank D. Anders, Vineland, NJ, 1913, page 13, (Google Books) we find Margaret Ayars married Azel Wood. Margaret's sister, Mary Ayers (1764-1825) married Samuel Statham (the owner of the family Bible, above). Margaret and Mary were daughters of John Ayars (1736-1802) and Susannah Jarman (1741-1824) married 1757.

Charles was orphaned at the age of 7-9. Perhaps he could have have been raised by the Steddum family, but this is speculation. Samuel Steddum and Mary Ayers had a son Samuel II b. 1789 that was living in San Augustine Co. by 1836. Charles' children are listed in the Steddum family Bible. Samuel Stiddum received a land grant of 1 league and 1 labor in 1828.

By some accounts, Charles was a river boat captain before he came to Texas.

Recorded May 12, 1831, in an application for citizenship in the Republic of Texas [should instead be Mexico?]: "Mr. Chas. A. Wood presents himself a native of The United States with a passport from the Consul of the United States of Mexico, Citizen Francisco Martinez Pizarro, made 4th day of May 1830, Not numbered. Place of residence Nacodoches." Does anyone have a copy of this? Reported by Ann Gary, ancestry.com San Augustine County Message Board. Original document is probably in a library in San Augustine.

There is also an article about Charles in Sabine County Historical Sketches and Genealogical Records, by Edna McDaniel White and Blanche Findley Toole, LaBelle Printing Co. Beaumont, TX, Copyright, 1972. It says about Charles A. Wood and Elizabeth Muse, "They had married on their way to Texas, and he received a first class land grant in San Augustine Co. on the Attoyac River, but he never lived on it. He was a Blacksmith and worked on river boats. He also invented a special belt for his cotton gin." We know from other records, however, that he didn't marry Elizabeth Muse until after he came to Texas, and she was first married to Benjamin Franklin Howard.

Charles Ayers Wood received a first class grant of 1/3 league (1476 acres) of land west of San Augustine on the Attoyac Bayou. This was the amount granted to single men. (Had he had a family, he would have been entitled to a league and a labor of land.) The year of emigration was 1831. You can find a record of this on the TX GLO website, http://www.glo.texas.gov/cf/land-grant-search/index.cfm . Charles traded his grant for land near the location of the Wood Cemetery south of San Augustine. One source said this was part of the Shipp Survey, and another said he purchased it from William Lakey. (The Shipp and Lakey grants are adjacent.)

Charles Ayers Wood married Elizabeth Muse about 1837. Elizabeth Muse had first married Benjamin Franklin Howard (or Harwood) who was born about 1807. They were married 31 Jan 1830 or 1831 in Madison Co, TN. One date appears in a loose document and the other appears in the bound record. They had one child, George Washington Howard, born about 1834 in TN, died during the Civil War in 1863 or 1864 on or near Galveston Island.

Benjamin F. Howard and Elizabeth Muse separated. One family history account says that B.F. Howard left his family and was reported dead. However, records show that he was still living, in 1865 and possibly 1874 or later. For more information on the Howard family, see micspoon.tripod.com/nti/nti11685.html.

Elizabeth Muse then married Charles Ayers Wood. The 1850 and 1860 US Census recorded the family in San Augustine Co., TX. Charles was a farmer. They had at least 8 children, all born in Texas, probably all in San Augustine Co.

Charles A. Wood was said to be the first person buried on the land that would become the Wood Cemetery. The Wood family deeded the land later.

There is little agreement about Charles A. Wood's date of death. The headstone reads, "August 15, 1850." The headstone appears to be modern. This date is not possible if he is the father of daughter Sarah Mariah, born 10 months later. Other accounts list the date of death as 15 Aug 1860 or 1861. These are not likely because he doesn't appear with his family in the Sabine County census recorded 20 Jul 1860. The origin of the 1860 or 1861 date could have been when the cemetery was deeded by the Wood family. The 1858 date (Steddum Bible?) seems to be the only choice consistent with the census records.

Claude Wood funeral held Friday

Claude Lee Wood, 86, died Wednesday, May 27, at the Tuscola County Medical Care Facility, where he had been a patient the past four years.

He was born Nov. 1, 1894, in Marlette, the son of Joseph and Sarah (Dove) Wood. He came to Cass City with his parents when he was a child.

He married Cecile Patterson in Caro Oct. 25, 1923. Following their marriage, they made their home on a farm in Ellington township.

Mrs. Wood died Dec. 27, 1973.

He served with the U.S. Army Signal Corps in World War I in France and Germany.

He was a life member of Tyler Lodge, F&AM, No. 317, of Cass City.

He is survived by one son, Robert WOOD of Cass City; one daughter, Mrs. Carlton (Beatrice) RONDO of Caro; one brother, Ernest WOOD of Northville, and five grandchildren. One brother, Herbert, and one sister, Edna, preceded him in death.

Funeral services were conducted Friday afternoon at Little's Funeral Home, Cass City.

He was born July 13, 1938 to Luther Wood and Eula Mae Felts and had lived in Hemphill his entire life. He was in maintenance at Temple-Inland and was of the Baptist faith.

Survivors: wife, Ruby Wood of Hemphill, mother Eula Wood of Hemphill; sons, Everest "Dickie" L. Wood and wife, Lisa, of Friendswood, John C. Webb and wife, Gail of Bronson, Thomas M. Webb and wife, Debbie of Deweyville, and Carl M. Webb, Jr. of Hemphill; daughter Cindy A. Ponder of Hemphill; brothers, Vilas "Boog" Wood of San Augustine, and Mike Wood of Hemphill; sister, Lexie McCarter of Tyler; 15 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. Visitation will be Thursday, May 24 from 4 to 9 p.m.

A Cenotaph in Memory of Francis M. Wood

Francis M. Wood was born about 1837 in San Augustine County, Texas to Elizabeth Muse and Charles Ayers Wood. He died 26 June 1863 in the Civil War, probably in northeast Louisiana near Vicksburg, MS, burial unknown. Military Service: Pvt., Company E 19th Regiment Tex Inf, CSA, "Walker's Greyhounds." The 1850 San Augustine Co. census shows Frances, female, but Howard family history micspoon.tripod.com/nti/nti11685.html mentions a son, Frank, who died in the Civil War.

The 1860 San Augustine Co. census shows Francis Wood (male), age 23, and Eugenia Wood, age 15, in the household of neighbors Thuresa (Thursa) and Richard J. Fonville. Eugenia Fonville and F.M. Wood were legally married 12 July 1860 in San Augustine Co.

There are two Wood children buried next to each other in the Fonville Family Cemetery (Wood Annex). Thursa Elizabeth Wood (1861-1861), Find A Grave 57012631, is probably their daughter and named for her grandmothers. Frances Marion Wood b 1863 d abount 1873, Find A Grave 57012660, was probably named after her father (but could be named for Eugenia's brother): The inscription on her marker reads "Dau. of F.M. Wood & Eugenia Fonville."

Mrs. Eugenia Woods married (2) Argyle Guy Loggins on Dec. 8, 1866 in San Augustine Co. Their Find A Grave Memorials are 19261653 and 19261654.

Frank fought in the same company as his younger brother, A.A. Wood. After marching over 1000 miles back and forth from Arkansas to Mississippi, their division earned the nickname "Walker's Greyhounds." Their first action was on June 7, 1863 at the battle of Millikin's Bend near Vicksburg, MS. There they attacked a supply depot. After initial success against Union infantry, they were repelled by gunboats. They retreated to northeast Louisiana where many died due to disease and malnutrition. This is where Frank is presumed to have died. His service record gives his date of death as June 26, 1863, one week before the fall of Vicksburg.

When he completed his registration for the draft during the First World War, he indicated he was farming in Pineland, Sabine County, Texas for C. A. Wood, who was also his closest relative.
He was of Medium heighth and slender build, with brown eyes and black hair. FindAGrave shows his parents as Charles Ayers Wood and Larissa Cordelia Wright.

Herbert Wesley Wood, Sr. was a farmer, mill worker, construction worker and master mechanic. He grew up in Pineland, Texas. He and his brothers had a band and played for dances. In Pineland he met and married Ella Mae Coats. They were married in or next to a Model T Ford. Ella Mae said of him that she never knew if she married him or a car! He opened a garage in Pineland. Their son, Herbert, Jr. was born in that town. The family moved to Forest, Nacogdoches and finally settled in Beaumont. He worked at the Buick dealership where his young family lived in an apartment above the garage. Later, he opened a garage on Highland Ave. in the South Park community of Beaumont. His son, Herbert, Jr. later joined him, and the business became Wood and Son Motors. The family was active in the South Park Baptist Church, and part of the close-knit South Park community. He was a quiet man and was dedicated to his family.

Herbert Wesley Wood, Jr.

Herbert Wesley Wood, Jr., 87, died Friday, Dec. 10, 2010, in Twin Lakes Care Center in San Augustine after an illness. Wood was born in Pineland to Herbert and Ella Mae Coats Wood.

He had lived near Hemphill since 1982 coming from Beaumont where he was owner and operator of Wood and Son Motors. Wood was a U. S. Air Force veteran of World War II. He was also a member of the Gideons, Rotary Club, Littleton Fowler Masonic Lodge #305 Shrine, and a Deacon of the First Baptist Church in Hemphill.

He is survived by his wife, Lorene Boyett Wood of Hemphill; son, Terry and wife Cindy Wood of Beaumont; daughter, Robin and husband Kelly Powell of Sour Lake; and sister, Virginia Christopher of Boerne. He is also survived by seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were conducted Sunday, Dec. 12, in the Starr Funeral Home Chapel. Burial followed in the Weaver Cemetery in Mayflower community.

Services were under the direction of Starr Funeral Home in Hemphill.

Jerry passed away at her home.

Born and raised in Beaumont, she graduated from South Park High School in 1947. She graduated from The University of Texas in 1951 and worked for the State of Texas briefly before beginning a career in teaching and education administration.

She was awarded a Master's Degree from Lamar University in 1963 and a PhD from Texas A&M in 1982. During her career, she taught elementary school, junior high school math, high school math, education courses offered at Lamar, and was a principal at Brice Elementary in Mount Pleasant, Texas before her retirement in 1991.

She was active at First United Methodist Church most of her life and participated in numerous professional and community service organizations. She had many hobbies, including reading, cooking, gardening, and traveling.

Preceded in death by her husband, Doyle Slover Tierce survivors include her children, Virginia Ellen Wallace and her husband James Weldon Wallace and Paul Wood Tierce and his wife Amber White Tierce; grandchildren Paula Lynn Wallace, James Sterling Wallace and his wife Amanda Gardner Wallace and Michael Todd Wallace; brother Herbert Wesley Wood, Jr. and his wife Lorene Boyette Wood, sisters Virginia Wood Christopher, and Mary Ann Wood Strickland.

Mallori Nicole Wood was born in Shreveport, LA on November 19, 2008 to Kelli and Matt Wood of Center.

Mary Ann Strickland was born in Beaumont, Texas in 1928 to Ella Mae and Herbert W. Wood, Jr. She was the third of four surviving children. She lived in the South Park community in Beaumont and was a member of South Park Baptist Church.

Mary Ann attended Lamar University, the University of Texas and graduated from Sam Houston State University with a B.A. in chemistry in 1949. While at Sam Houston, she met her future husband, Robert L. Strickland, at the Baptist Student Union. After graduating, she taught high school in Devers, TX. She was 20 when she began teaching. After they married, they attended Southern Seminary in Ky. They returned to Texas to start a family.

After Bob contracted polio in 1953, she resumed her teaching career. She was the family breadwinner and cared for her husband until his death in 1988. She taught elementary school in Dallas and Spring Branch, high school math in Houston. She eared a M.S. in Library Science and worked as a librarian in junior and senior high schools in Houston.

Mary Ann was active in her church. At Southland and Gulf Meadows Baptist churches in Houston, she served as Sunday School teacher, VBS teacher, committee member and librarian. Mary Ann had the gift of hospitality. She "adopted" several co-workers, students and church members.

In 1996, she moved to Austin where she was a member of Bannockburn Baptist Church. She kept a prayer journal for her Sunday School Class.

Mollie and Louis Sanders had at least five children.

He was in the United States Marine Corp and served in the Vietnam War. He worked as a Lathe Technician for Temple Inland.

He is survived by his son Michael Thomas Wood and wife Nacole of Hemphill, his daughter Amy Whiteside and husband Michael of Hemphill, his sister Lexie "Sis" McCarter of Tyler, and his 10 grandchildren.

He is preceded in death by his wife Sue Ann Wood.

Visitation will be from 6:00PM until 8:00PM, Friday, July 22,2016, in the Starr Funeral Home, 510 Starr St. Hemphill, Texas. Graveside services will be at 10:00AM, Saturday, July 23,2016, in the Harper Chapel Cemetery.
